Destiny 2: Lightfall

I wonder just how bad player numbers and expansion pack sales are? Companies don't give a shit about how salty Reddit is, they only generally make start to take action if things are affecting their bottom line.

Whilst the XP thing hasn’t got anywhere near the media momentum the Battlefront clusterfuck did, it is starting to  to spread outside of dedicated gaming sites,

Something I hadn’t considered was that Activision had partnered with Kellogg’s (Pop Tarts) and Rockstar (energy drinks) to flog double XP codes, I imagine last thing they want is sponsors getting dragged into this.

Some data to go along with Slayerage's video btw: Weapon usage

Just backs up what he says in the video.

Well, that explains why everyone has Origin Story, Mida or Uriel whenever I play. I started using them on all characters when I realised everyone else was.

The combination of Mida and Uriel is ridiculous.

However, I also believe the map designs force these. There really isn't any maps where sniper rifles are useful, the uselessness of grenades forces you to throw from a big distance or to halt an advance and the short-range weapons bar three shot burst side-arms just don't have enough punch.

Just how bad do you think tomorrow’s stream must have been when they recorded/rehearsed it to have now cancelled it? The last stream was the worst thing they have ever put out by a large margin but maybe this one could have topped that with a whole stream reveal about all the latest Eververse content they are adding in the DLC. I imagine they think they can better control the message in a blog post than another pathetic tone deaf stream with a blue and two tokens but it’s going to have to really be a massive blog post to cover all the issues the game has and how they are going to address them and in what timeframe. Something the size of TWAB isn’t going to cut it but I really suspect that’s what they will put out.

I’m interested to see how they word this from a curiousity standpoint (will they apologise for the xp system? Will they admit they fucked up a lot of stuff that wasn’t broken?) but pretty much anything less than an announcement of porting the D2 content (missions/strikes/raid/pvp maps) back into D1 (with its old weapons, subclasses and 6v6 PvP) will be too little too late for me.

I just did an online chat with MS to see if they would refund me for the expansion pass but because it was a bundle they will only refund the full amount. I'm unsure what to do now!

Maybe it will be go...ah who am I kidding. Have you played over 100 hours? if so then just walk away from it all.

Surely just get the full refund and buy the disc for half price if you still want to play D2? Although carrying on playing without getting the expansion seems pointless.

I think I’m going to flog my copy. I had some fun out of it but it feels the momentum has gone. Shame. I was prepared to jump in again with both feet but the impetus just isn’t there. As with D1, the release of the first DLC is an impasse for me.

From my experience with D1, I’d expect them to start limiting the content you can play without the expansion pass. I’d bet people without it won’t be able to participate in events like Iron Banner or faction rallies, and there were other things in the first game that were restricted if you didn’t buy the new update. You’ll likely not just miss out on new stuff, but have old stuff you’ve already paid for taken away from you.

Think someone has had a word with young  Deej. He’s actually answering questions on his Twitter in a relatively straightforward fashion today. Different to his usual MO of wording everything like he’s in the process of writing a spec novel for Mills & Boon starring a Hunter and a Warlock or addressing any criticism of the game with sarcasm.

It'll be interesting to see just how concrete these promises are, and how wide-ranging the planned changes. Not worth going into every aspect of the game that's been criticised again, but I hope they go a lot further than just 'de-tokenising' / material rewards, improving the way you get XP for immaterial / cosmetic ones from Eververse, and some weapon balancing. I guess they can't really undo the totally baked-in stuff like having two primaries and no special, but there's a lot of equally fundamental structural stuff I'm hoping they'll acknowledge and address directly. For example, adding in to the hardest content rewards that actually progress your character's power and abilities has to be a must to make those activities more attractive for repeated (or even single) playthroughs.

I've had the feeling for some time that he (and I'm sure many developers at the studio) have not necessarily been happy with the way the game has been panning out, and even more unhappy with having to front it to an increasingly hostile audience - like 'I don't want to have to deliver this message any more'. It was really obvious in the last stream that he wasn't expecting such valuable rewards and two tokens and a blue to pop out from those chests, and I commented at the time he probably raged afterwards at being hung out to dry. You could see the complete lack of enthusiasm and belief in how they were presented compared to many of the streams from D1 - even the bad ones.

I'm not getting all carried away or anything - heaven forfend I become an optimist - but I do think there's been a lot of internal debate/dissent at Bungie over the stripping away of many features and characteristics of the game, and it may be that the internal focus has now shifted to acknowledging some of these new directions haven't panned out. I bet of all the staffers, the guy who has to communicate with the core audience (the ones who actually read his shit) is probably happiest of all about that.

What's the two tokens and a blue thing all about?

Their last live stream showed off the DLC - and it's new heroic event.

At it approached climax the presenter cheered it was "their most reward event yet!"

And the players opened up the (two!) chests and got 2 tokens and a blue from it...to a rather muted reaction

I meant generally are there problems?

Depends who you ask. I'd summarise it by saying it's the opposite of Destiny 1; in that game, it was incredibly awkward and complicated to get into and it took ages to actually get a handle on it, but once it clicked and you got into the endgame, it was one of the best games ever. In D2, the systems are much simplified, and the early and mid-game are incredibly compelling, but the high-level activities aren't particularly rewarding, either in terms of gear or in terms of fun.

The whole setup of the new game seems focused on you having one or two sessions per week, rather than playing it every day. I quite like that, but lots of people (justifiably) aren't keen.
