Destiny 2: Lightfall

This all sounds a bit boring, doesn't it. Ah well.

I can't quite reconcile the improved pipeline with what is seemingly the same release schedule either. More to the point, where's the QoL and sandbox stuff? Overwatch has had five patches since Destiny 2 launched on console, adding new stuff and fixing the old. There have been things that were obviously off in the very early days of Destiny 2 that they've just done nothing about. They'll fix anything they deem gamebreaking like infinite supers and out-of-bounds glitches, sure. But balance problems can wait until a big sandbox update in three months' time or whatever? Yeesh. Very disappointing.

They’ve only just got around to listing a Hunter boot bug that people have been complaining about since launch as an issue they’re aware of.

I've been playing Fortnite lately and Epic's approach is night and day to Bungie. Regular patches that add QOL improvements, clear communication that actually addresses what the community is interested in, transparently admitting when something goes wrong and written clearly and concisely instead of buried in paragraphs of some prat trying to act like thay're LARPing in the universe.

Gamespot first impressions

Quote

Mercury as a destination is actually a rather small, circular area on the planet called the Fields of Glass, which is connected to the Lighthouse that Bungie showed off last week. The most notable thing about the new map is the assortment of powerful, "high-value target" enemies you can fight--there seems to be more of them in the Fields of Glass than at other locations in Destiny 2. Other than that, it's an unremarkable donut map, and we couldn't even summon Sparrows there--seemingly to mask how small the area is.

Tiny patrol area. And Datto states in his recent video that the Infinite Forest is just a way to travel between past, present and future, and you can run past the enemies as there's no reason to kill them.

The Dark Below may actually be beat when it comes to worst Destiny dlc.

I thought House of Wolves was the most underwhelming but the signs aren't great so far.

It is, due to no raid. For the raid in this, people have been saying Osiris' "Lair" will be the same size as Crota's End, but personally I think Osiris will be smaller. I dont get why people are saying this dlc will be the same size as Rise of Iron though. That will definitely not be the case. Mercury is tiny in comparison, so if they're just going on the fact it'll have a patrol area, and no new "arena" style public area like in Rise or Taken King, its actually smaller.

Oh, and then there's this - Destiny 2's Senior Gameplay Designer and the Senior Sandbox Designer talk candidly on Crucible Radio:

Some of that is out of context, but fuck me if it doesnt paint a rather bleak outlook for the future of not just this game, but the franchise as a whole (all 10 - yeah right! - years). Still cant believe what I was hearing. Astonishing.

Edit: Listen to it here http://traffic.libsyn.com/crucibleradio/crucibleradio-ep126.mp3

It’s weird that they think having less access to supers, powers and secondary weapons makes them more exciting. I’m not much more likely to waste my super because activating it as soon as I get it in PVP is the only way I stand any chance of using it twice in a match, which is a huge advantage.

You're opening too much stuff (chests, resources, or treasure map chests) too quickly - Bungie has now automatically blocked you from getting more loot until a cooldown has passed.

Huh you serious?

Yep. If you loot [including planetary materials) too much stuff in an open play area (like 5 in 5 minutes) it blocks you from obtaining more and gives you a hidden cooldown (IIRC for 5 minutes) and each time you try it extends/resets this cool down.

Yep it's complete nonsense - and catchs loads of people that buy Cayde's treasure maps (or the zone maps that only last for an hour)

It's a farce.

You've opened those Cayde chests now (even though you've got nothing for them) so hope you felt you got value for your glimmer.

As well as this, the Cayde's chest also have a chance of having nothing in them anyway no matter if you are on cooldown or not. They are not guaranteed to have anything in them, even though you'd think they would at 4,800 glimmer each, its another RNG gamble.

So someone on reddit mathsed out the XP issue. Turns out that it aggressively scales your XP earnings behind the scenes based on how efficiently you are earning it, even though the UI still reports you're earning the maximum.

So, kill one thing, bank the XP, then kill another thing, etc, and you get 100% of the XP you ought to.

Start to kill things more quickly, and the scaling kicks in. By the end of the average public event you're getting maybe 50% of what the UI tells you you're getting.

By the end of an 'enemy is moving against each other' event, you're getting about 4%.

This had better be a bug, because if it isn't it's fucking disgusting.

Stupid Bungie!

Do they want me to play the game or not?

It seems not, although I suspect they would still like you to buy it and the DLC. I wonder what the attach rate is for the expansion pass... it's not like they need to bother fixing anything till that runs out in a year and then hype up the next big DLC release with a 'we bought gally back again!' and make everyone pay to fix what is a shockingly broken base game. DLC QoL updates are really insidious as they basically force you to buy them to continue playing the game properly.

I really wish I could get a refund on my digital expansion pass, I won't ever be pre-ordering anything Bungie produce again.

That XP thing is fucking weird. I would hazard a guess that they want to normalise and limit the rate at which people get bright engrams, but why not just have an explicit cap? The structure of the game as a whole is to limit each player to X number of powerful engrams a week, so it would make sense to have the same system for bright engrams. I get that you can buy bright engrams, and you don't want to turn players off altogether, but surely getting derisory amounts of XP is presumably going to be just as much of a turnoff as hitting the cap?

It's especially weird as the idea of getting less XP and fewer drops for doing things in quick succession is the precise opposite of how lots of game mechanics work. It's like an anti-combo. Having hidden mechanics that work against the player is  poor; it's only cosmetic stuff, so it's hardly game-breaking, but it's still pretty underhand.

Only if you get caught! It's not pay-to-win if you can earn them in game!*

* time to earn engrams in game may be longer than the half life of uranium if you play more than 9 minutes at a time.

What I'm not going to do is not play it "on principle". I've paid for it, might as well play it and wrest at least some fun from it.

I'm definitely not stopping playing on principle (although I might have considered it if all this stuff, that seems clearly designed with at least half an eye on encouraging Bright Engram spend, was apparent a while ago.)

But I have stopped playing it because the critical mass of people to do the endgame content has drifted off.

The worst thing about the loot lockouts and XP reduction is its all been implemented in such an underhand and hidden way and never communicated to players as something they may encounter. They had to fess up to needing to 'investigate' the loot cooldowns when they got caught with their pants down about that one and in a few days time when Bungie meet the wrath of Reddit and their own Forums about the XP reduction system they will put out a hollow 'we will be looking at the numbers and adjusting accordingly' statement and then take months to do anything about it and all the while only for being sorry about being caught not for implementing a shitty anti-consumer practice in the first place. Considering that some people might have actually paid real money to purchase fireteam medallions, which get affected by this system, this is flat out fraudulent and Bungie have some serious explaining to do. Good job they have such a great communications director in Deej.

This comment from the XP reduction Reddit post was pretty funny

This game is worse than Battlefront because at least Battlefront loudly declares that it's fucking you in the butthole before doing it, and gives you a timer on how long it's going to take. Destiny 2 slips it in by surprise and keeps rocking you long past when you want it to, apparently.

D2 is clearly not a game that Bungie wants me to continue playing, so I'm going to follow their wishes.
