Bungie Community Manager

12h

Reddit, that was a personal note from me about a nice moment I had with a long-lived friend of mine, not an official statement about Bungie's attitude about the endgame. I've always been a community guy. That's why I play games. Anyone who knows me knows I'm not an elite Raider or a 1%er in the Crucible. Games are another social outlet for me - a collaborative, tactical roleplay for an old improvisational actor who has always loved action movies. Destiny is a social game, and we have a lot of new players in our community who have never joined a Clan or opened their experience to another human voice. My personal story was as a positive example to inspire them to take a chance on us. If you seek more reasons to play, I'll see you in Iron Banner next week. If Crucible isn't your thing, good luck in the Prestige Raid. I'll sit that out. When the designers tell me they don't expect everyone to complete that, I know what they mean. Peace.

High time this dumbass got sent packing.

He really is spectacularly bad at reading the room, which you’d assume would be a skill that would be fairly high up for a community manager.

Every Destiny based thread has been grumbling that the end game is a bit anemic and worried about Bungie’s plans for this, since they’ve been radio silent on the subject. I don’t think it’s quite as bad as a lot of the audience, but some clear communication in their plans going forward would be nice.

So to announce that Iron Banner is now basically just a Quickplay Control playlist and that the Prestige Raid would have ‘minimal’ differences and probably just give you palette swapped armour and an aura was unlikely to ever go over well. To then follow it up with his asinine 'Friendship is magic and the true endgame' was always going to make places like Reddit meltdown.

Someone at Activision needs to sit Bungie management down infront of a big file of Jeff Kaplan's Overwatch updates and say 'This is how it’s done’.

I don't think Bungie would ever go full Kaplan, much as I'd like them to. But someone at least needs to be reading this stuff and signing off on it. There are three or four bad, bad messaging errors in there that I'd expect anyone in the studio with even the vaguest inkling of how the game is currently perceived to pick up on.

But really they shouldn't have to. Something I don't think is widely understood about community managers is that they tend to sit in on a lot of important meetings. They may not make the decisions but they'll certainly be party to the thinking behind them, because it's up to them, at least in part, to work out how something should be communicated, and how it's likely to go down. So Deej really should have seen all this coming before he hit submit. Because of the way bungie communicates (or doesn't) his job is vitally important, especially at this stage of the game's life. For him to fuck it up so badly, in so many ways, is just crazy to me.

Think I may be done with the game until the DLC to be honest.

When you say the DLC, do you essentially mean the probably Autumn 2018 expansion?

If so, that's a bit worrying. I've got Rat King/MIDA and all that pending but other than Nightfalls and the odd bit of crucible, nothing much appeals. The current raid doesn't look like much fun and the co-ordination required and weekly time limit looks like it might genuinely impossible for me to ever complete even if I wanted to.

Eh? No, there more content coming December. There's also be the festival of the lost for Halloween.  :)

The raid is fun, it's just not what 99% of the Destiny community were expecting.

So I'm totally confused re: the DLC. Is the £29.99 DLC pack for stuff over the next year or the next two years? Because I'm sure that seems too cheap for the latter. TTK was like £30-40 on its own, IIRC, but I'm not that familiar with the Destiny 1 DLC.

As someone who is pretty heavily PvP focused I can’t believe they’ve taken the levelling out of IB. I’ve been working my way up to 300 primarily for this, it’s like if the raid was auto levelled and your power didn’t matter, except even worse because at least the raid would still be new content. Without the level advantages it needs its own maps and game types or something, otherwise literally what is the point? I feel a bit like they’ve just made a month of me looking forward to it totally pointless :(

That’s without even mentioning that it destroys the lore of the iron banner and Saladin. I guess him and Shaxx are just buddies now.

The £29.99 expansion pass is for two packs, Curse of Osiris (probably around the end of December) and Gods of Mars (around May I guess? I can’t remember when HoW released). There will be a big, Year 2 Taken King style update for £40ish next September.

Edit: House of Wolves was released in May. Taken King was 40 dollars so maybe £30?

On the subject of the raid, I'm conflicted a bit on the loot side of things. I dont like the fact we dont get raid drops that much, and also a hell of a lot of dupes, but I actually dont mind the tokens system so much, as you can, in theory, get around 6 rank ups with sweeper bot on one character if you did the raid 3 times (once on each character), as the tokens can be used on any character. This means you have a far better chance at getting the stuff you want, theoretically (with the duplicates issue this is, quite often, the opposite mind), such as a full set of the raid armour, or that gun you want.

Its not a bad system - what is bad is the duplicates issue that is pretty prevelant with the whole game (the multiple exotic dupes is ridiculous - had 2 exotics last night on my Hunter, turned into another lucky pants and another Stomp-EE5 - would kill for a Rig. Felt like being trolled with both being legs too....).

I'd also kill for some of the non-raid guns, but I've not seen a whiff of such gems as the Nergal PR4 (the Omolon pulse rifle from the beta that felt really nice), or the Manannan SR4 scout rifle that has the same perk (explosive payload) as Nameless Midnight, but is in your energy slot. Interestingly, both of these are from Banshee, who keeps giving me multiples of the same guns.....what a dick.

I’ve had about 20 Nergal’s, it’s almost as if it’s random!

If you're sitting on loads of legendary shards you could always buy up a load of Xur stock and scrap it for mucho Gunsmith rank ups.

Yep, although you can also get exotic weapons out of your collection tab and do the same, albeit much cheaper (10 shards instead of the 20 odd from Xur). Not tried it myself, but it is an option.

Anyway, I meant to post this the other day, and then totally forgot, but here's the difference in dialogue between a veteran account (someone who did everything in Destiny 1) and a new account in Destiny 1. Yes, there are differences:

Edit: these are just story mission differences, there are bound to be strike, adventures and other things different, as some of them mention Eris for example, and new players would have no idea who she is.

It seems like it wouldn't be that hard to weight the RNG against duplicates. Like it's still random, there's just less random chance to get things you already have?

It actually works the other way round and for each guardian some things are much rarer than others which is why some might get 10 better devils while another will get 10 nameless midnights. It's their way of mixing the loot pool up a bit and has been like that way since D1.

This week's been interesting. I'm on holiday so haven't played, and while there's been a certain amount of FOMO from the notifications I'm getting of the gang sorting out raid times on the PS Messages app, I haven't particularly missed the game, just the people.

I get back tomorrow night, and have been periodically anxious about not having enough time before reset to get my milestones done, but it's a sort of subconscious thing, and once I actually think about it I realise these are old D1 feelings that don't really apply anymore. I don't need to make the numbers go up, because trials and banner ignore them anyway. I don't need big loot drops because I'm already at a high enough power level to take on every bit of content in the game, and there's no gear I feel like I'm missing that will make a difference to the way I play, or my chance of clearing certain things.

Basically i just have this ingrained feeling of, oh crap, it's nearly reset and I haven't even started on my to-do list. But when I actually look at the list, there's actually very little point in doing any of it.

I had similar yesterday, loaded up and thought ‘what to do’ there wasn’t anything to do so I looked and no one online to chat to so turned it off :o Even in the famous Destiny droughts that never happened, always and some shite to grind out!
