Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

Multiplayer can be great, but it doesn't make a lot of sense at the moment. It's as though they didn't learn anything from running Infinity. Basically if they keep it as PVP only there is no point in flying out in any type of aircraft other than a fighter (I suppose some multiroles will be useful). I hope there will be a PVE addition to the online modes at some point, otherwise all those nice unlockable skins for attackers won't be much use.

Last night I encountered some optimistic soul flying out for TDM in a warthog. Of course I harassed him constantly as in an attacker he had very little chance of avoiding my missiles, and he didn't. In all subsequent rounds he was flying a Tomcat.

Had some problems with mission 6 as well. Ran out of missiles too early (max 72 on F-16C) and would crash into the ground or mountains trying to machine gun my targets to death. Took a break, did some multiplayer and earned extra credits to unlock F-18F and the part that increases standard missile load. Was a lot easier with 110+ missiles. Unlocking/using the A-10 and it's 4AGM's is a very viable alternative.

I may be misremembering, but assuming that's the mission with three bases to hit, you can resupply in that one by crossing the blue line to the east. More or less essential in the craft with few weapons!

In other news, mission 19 utterly kicked my arse yesterday, and I finally have reason to regret my decision to start the campaign on hard. Still, I knew the risks; the game makes very clear that you can't change the difficulty mid-campaign! I may have to do some free flights (or even, horrifically, some multiplayer) to grind out some different equipment, as my focus on the European multirole fighters may not be the best for this mission of pure large-scale dogfighting...

Giant Bomb have a quicklook up and half way through they switch to VR (Dan playing)

I would love to pull a Back to the Future with 1994 me. Just rock up and plonk other me in a PSVR with shit like that playing. I would have seriously exploded with astonishment. I was aware of what current consumer VR was and its massive limitations. I tended to a Virtuality machine at a fun fair in Jersey, the boxing one. Was able to have as many free goes as I wanted, and was super excited beforehand. I played it once, maybe twice. Nothing like I'd imagined or how the magazines of the time had been espousing consumer VR as the next level, it was just so underwhelming, and looked like a 386 game. Shit like AC7 VR would have been unbelievable, witchcraft. Today when people say PSVR isn't up to the job of good VR I'm like  "what!, it's incredible and well up to shit hot experiences graphically, you need to try Virtuality from the mid 90s mate"

Thought that was off limits! Wonder if the briefing after the mission changes when you do ?

Never played any games in this series but this looks really good. I'm torn between the PC version (for flight stick support - as I have one already) or the PS4 version (for PSVR). Any thoughts on what would make the most difference?  I assume there's no way of using my PC flight stick on the PS4 and I don't really want to buy another one.

Really want to play this in VR, so much so that I’ve just gone through the whole creating a JPN account and linking it to PS4, but now really struggling to find the demo on the JPN store, every page I go to on AC7 has Yen figures

Is there a way to change the store language or could someone help explain where the demo is?

Thanks :)

This is copied directly from a comment on a Eurogamer article - I haven't tried it personally, but saw it earlier when looking into it myself (apparently the demo is very short, so I decided not to bother (although I'm gagging to play the game, still)). Hope it helps though:

For anyone wanting to download it, once you have set up your Japanese PS account, probably the easiest way to grab it if you don't read Japanese is to sign into the account and then use this link:

https://store.playstation.com/ja-jp/product/JP0700-CUSA14839_00-ACECMBT7VRSTDEMO

To download the demo, it's the option on the left of the screen, below the game thumbnail (the top of the 2 clickable lines; not the one with the little heart in it.) Proceed as you would do normally, then you can sign back into your usual PS account, find the demo in your library and set it to download. It's only 2.46 GB, and you can turn on English subtitles and voice options when you're playing it.

Worked perfect, downloading now, thanks! :)

Anybody playing on the One X? Few people on Reddit saying that the game occasionally crashes and then when you reboot you get a warning that your console overheated. It is apparently repeatable so isn't actually an over heating problem. Bit loathe to start up my copy now, just in case.

I got this via CD Keys - does that mean I won’t get the pre-order bonus of AC6?

I got a couple of other pre order bonus planes and parts.

i wouldn’t even mind if 6 was available for purchase but it doesn’t seem to be and I can’t find the disc.

Apparently, you need to download Ace Combat 7 to your Xbox One, then search for Ace Combat 6 on the store, and you should then be able to download it for free. My copy of Ace Combat 7 has got lost in the post, so can't confirm if the above works, but I haven't been emailed a download code.

Shows "Redeem a code" for me, however checking the FAQ on Bandai Namco site seems to suggest I'll get a message via Xbox Live within 10 days with a code. So fingers crossed.

I ordered a physical copy form shopto, and that came with two XBox codes. putting those in seemed to give me the F-4 Phantom, the 3 extra skins, and Avril's (completely useless) F-104. at this point, I didn't have AC6 in my library (but had the AC7 installed). I then did what you described (looked for AC6 on the store, and clicked to get it it.) the AC6 dash store page was a bit incomplete and missing some images, but it worked and I downloaded it.

My son's really taken to this, to the extent that I need to dig out my PS2 so he can play 4, 5, and Belkan War.

So I never played Ace Combat (or really any flight game aside from Afterburner and X-Wing). But the Eurogamer review piqued my interest. Do you think I would enjoy this game? Bearing in mind I have no real interest in planes or flight sims, but it looks kinda exciting and atmospheric. And I've managed to get into specialised genres before that I had no clue about, like Silent Hunter (submarines) and mech combat (Armoured Core/Steel Battalion).

I'm playing it with a controller just like I did on psone and 2. Ace combat 7 is a return to form. Back to ace combat 4 and 5. Fantastic stuff. Great music and audio again.

The mission structure and storyline is always intriguing and makes you feel you are part of this war. You kind of get lost in it, whether it's good or bad.

I keep getting g confused with the two territories. All I remember from back in the day is Radgriz.

It's certainly less sim-y than SB or SH, and less customisation oriented than that there other AC, so it depends how much you enjoy dramatic, arcadey combat. Of the games listed it's closest to X-Wing, with a similarly broad range of mission types and meaty campaign. It even has capital ships to take down and trench runs of a sort!

Not really any interest in planes or military stuff myself and I love it, it's an arcadey flight sim with a dose of Metal Gear style crazyness. It's def not a traditional boring flight sim, it's super exciting to play and has great music, def worth it.

Also the VR in this is crazy well done in this, played it last night and you are full on in that cockpit straining your neck to look out the glass to spot the enemy planes, the typical VR queasiness just adds to it all as you zoom around the clouds, I swear if the chair I was sitting in didn't have arm rests I would of fallen off during some off the high G turns.

I'm waiting until I build up my VR legs a lot more until I try this. I was aiming for at least 20 mins a day before xmas but fell by the wayside after playing WipEout for 10 minutes and nearly dying. I was definitely improving up to that point, managing to play Farpoint for longer than 20 minutes with no ill effect. Need to get back on the boat. It fucking kills me being so prone to it, nothing else I've ever done causes ill effects, boats, flying, big dippers etc. Never had a hint of nausea playing traditional games. I fucking love VR, it's incredible and it breaks my heart that I have to be cautious with it. Fuck, why is there no magic pill. I'd have been day one with this if this wasn't the case. Oh well I'll get there and then I'll be all over this.

I wonder if real fighter pilots, or probably more apt, stunt flyers need to combat nausea, seeing as their body is basically static yet their head and horizon is going all over the shop.
