I loaded up ace combat 5 for 10 minutes this morning. It’s pretty astonishing how good it looks considering it’s a ps2 game running on emulation. The gui just needs to be smaller that’s all.

This series has always been a technical beast.

non-spoilery thoughts:

The opening mission is a bit low-key, compared to the enormous extravaganza that was the first mission of AC6. AC6's missions could really be thought of each as 3 missions mashed together going on next to each other on a huge map - this is more back to the scale of the PS2 games. I've played up to mission 5 or 6.

The tech tree is really awkward to navigate. It's very easy to get onto a different branch of the one you're looking at. (Decided to do the euro tree that starts with the Mirage so I can get the Typhoon. got as far as Gripen.)

Game still does the annoying thing of making you get through a cutscene and the next briefing before you can get to the tech tree to spend your MRP on shiny new planes and stuff.

Multiplayer is fun, but seems random (not many people on last night). pays decent MRP.

I've been playing games in this series for 14 years and I still can;t tell which country and continent is which.

Lack of a native photo mode is a real shame.

Don’t know too much about the series but the replay feature once you finish a mission was pretty cool.

People could make some cool little movies.

Just kinda wish it was a whole game dedicated to choppers because we all know they are waaaaaaay cooler than planes. Would be way more scope for mission variety too.

I did mission 1, then jumped into multiplayer to see what that was like.

Had a bit of a nightmare sussing out the settings for the flight stick (the controls given for flight stick in the menu do not actually apply, as the Hori stick is behaving as a regular PS4 controller). I have just one niggle about the stick, which is that they put the radar range selection on the touchpad button, which means taking a hand off at least one of the sticks to change the radar. There is a perfect 3-setting switch they could have used on the throttle, but instead they used that to toggle between thrust/yaw/camera controls on the throttle, which is bonkers.

Multiplayer was massively demoralising for the first few battle royale matches, but after a while I was starting to see some results - had a couple of matches where I was in the lead with a minute or two to go, but being in first makes you a massive points target so holding on to the lead is tough. I did eventually win a match, then had a go at team deathmatch. There was one guy in a Mig-31 Foxhound that was terrorising my team in every round, completely uncatchable, so I had to keep playing until he was finally beaten.

I didnt expect to like pvp much (far preferred Infinity with it's score chasing co-op arrangement) but I can see me going back to this quite often. I need to get a grip of what I'm doing and stop panicking theough. Usually I would confuse the switch target and the switch weapon buttons, which meant I was flying like a headless chicken a lot of the time.

Trophy wise it doesn't seem too bad; I just hope there isn't one for winning all the multiplayer medals as that would require being the best player in all modes, countless times.

EA need to revive the strike series!

Just posting to say that this is a wonderful return to form. Started playing at 20:00 last night, had to drag myself to bed at 02:30, and have been having a fantastic time. Only campaign so far, and it's been everything I wanted: varied, challenging missions packed with twists; utterly gorgeous visuals with a rock-solid framerate 99.99% of the time (playing on PS4 Pro); ridiculous, melodramatic story.

If you're a fan of the older Ace Combats (particularly 4 & 5, which this feels like a blend of) then I implore you not to sleep on this.

Picked one of these up at Smyths (the toy store) via click and collect, £59.99.  Works great with AC7 and then playing in VR , well.........amazing.

after seeing your post Shaky i looked at Smyths in Birmingham and found a PS4 HOTAS for £49.99. That seems a decent deal :)

Nice....can’t really go wrong at that price. I known it’s seen as an entry level stick but i’ve really enjoyed using it and it’s really added to the experience of playing AC7.   Enjoy! :)

Mission 6 is kicking my arse at the moment . Turn it off .. think about it for an hour .. turn it back on again... sign of a good game

Had some problems with mission 6 as well. Ran out of missiles too early (max 72 on F-16C) and would crash into the ground or mountains trying to machine gun my targets to death. Took a break, did some multiplayer and earned extra credits to unlock F-18F and the part that increases standard missile load. Was a lot easier with 110+ missiles. Unlocking/using the A-10 and it's 4AGM's is a very viable alternative.

Multiplayer seems like a great way to boost your credits , open up the aircraft tree and allow yourself more freedom to tackle the story missions. Not sure if it makes a lot of sense/ takes a lot of skill as i was able to snag mvp in an F-16 without any parts against competition in F-22's (meaning they have the tree unlocked and have access to all/most parts). Still fun though.
