Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

While the VR content apparently looks great and plays really well it’s apparently pretty heavy on your stomach. After watching some footage I now understand that better. I’m not someone who suffers from it too much but I can now see how difficult it may be in this perticular game.

I would imagine they would have to completely redesign the game to make the whole thing work in VR, so thankfully they haven't.

Wipeout VR says Hello.

The complete Omega Collection, all in VR.

3 VR missions is disappointing, but that's a diversion from the fact this is the first proper Ace Combat in what, over a decade?? VR was always just a bonus.

That Call of Duty-styled auto-playing helicopter nonsense on the PS3 doesn't count, and Infinity was a pay-to-play scam (despite playing great).

Infinity a pay to play scam ? Well, you could have done as Kono-san himself suggested and create or use another account on your ps3 and double your playing time. Add a third or fourth account and you could basically play the game forever, no money needed. Was actually much nicer to separate your russian, american, euro and sci-fi jets on different profiles and create your own themed 'wings'. Negated the need to buy extra hangar slots/ fuel and sped up R&D on your planes and parts. Switching accounts and booting up could be done in under a minute. i loved playing Infinity so much, sincerely hope they make a new multiplayer focussed (f2p) Ace Combat after AC7.

Ahem, Ace Combat 7 then, spotted a new trailer:

It unlocked to play at midnight last night, but I want to have a proper go of it so I haven't launched it yet.

For some reason, AC5 showed up in my download list correctly (for my region) as 'The Unsung War' - both the thumbnail and the text - but now its installed its changed name to Squadron Leader. That's a bit irritating, however it gives me some hope that Namco have made the game with full English support because that's the European title and I bought the Japanese one.

I pre ordered it. Why not eh.

my first ace combat game (played a demo way back on 360)

I plan on trolling my mate by bigging up the graphics of this game then inviting him in to watch some shareplay at midnight. Then i’ll Load up Squadren Leader and gush over how much more advanced it is than Red Dead.

Well, that’s a very short demo. Either the demo content is extremely limited or there is a timer. Whatever the case, it’s not hard to imagine what the demo is: Ace Combat in VR. That’s truly it, no surprises there.

Just played a couple of missions. I like it. Controls took a little figuring out but you can hold buttons for cinematic views just as I had hoped.

Looks great, runs great. Way to early to tell if it’ll offer much up in gameplay apart from the standard fly and shoot

My second post since receiving the game without having played it yet.

Anyway this is about the Flight Stick - I expected a rehash of the old AC5 stick but this has all the bells and whistles - touch pad on the base, share and options button, PS button - what is interesting is there's a toggle switch for PS3/PS4 compatibility. Is there any need for that? Any flight sims on PS3 I have missed? Infinity was shut down already, right?

Which flight stick did you get?

did anyone else pre-order this from shopto? I got it yesterday but don't seem to have codes for my pre-order bonuses...

I feel really crap about giving this one a miss for now, I've been interested in it since they announced it, haven't played an Ace Combat game since PS2 & I really enjoyed it back then but with Resi 2 out next week I know it'll fall by the side and it really does look set to be one of those games that'll be £20 in a month or two

Nice review up on EG.

Mini impressions: Only played a single multiplayer match (lost horribly) and then flew the first campaign mission (A rank) with an F-4E Phantom. Game looks stunning (coming form ACI) and sounds amazing. Ambient menu tune is hypnotic as ever and even the music in the dynamic theme sounds just right to me. Plane movement feels slightly different then ACI, not sure if i'd describe it as more weighty but is going to take some time to get used to and feel like an ace again. Wish i had a VR set up so i could make free flight that more special.

Gotta go to work now but can't wait to dive back in tonight.
