Dunno what's now in the back of that Renault but it's not (I think) a Renault F1 V8. Maybe a Judd or some other lower spec engine replacement.

Just checked, they had it down as  Alonso-liveried Formula Nippon.  Piquet's Benetton sounded pretty good too, always good to be able to get right up close to these cars in use rather than sitting in a museum (and it was all free).

You know who I would like to get a shot in the Toro Rosso for the rest of the year? Brendon Hartley. Sports car champion, former single-seat rival of Danny Ric, used to be part of the Red Bull scheme... yeah. That'd be cool.

Rumour has it he's off to Chip Gnassi racing an indycar, he's also an old fart for that seat and once you fall off the Redbull driver program, you don't tend to get back on it....

Idly watching videos on the F1 YouTube channel and it occurred to me that every record Hamilton has set it or is going to set it going to be beaten by Max isn't it just because he will be in the sport for so long and will no doubt be in one of the top teams. The only way he won't take those records is if he makes the same kind of career choices that Alonso has.

It's interesting reading about the drivers never quite get a shot. I seem to remember an article in an F1 mag about a bloke who was regularly beating people Alonso, Webber, Button etc all the way up through the ranks, but never got a go in an F1 car because the seats kept going to pay drivers etc, and then the next generation came along, so he ended up in advertising or something.

Happens a lot. The Tommy Byrne film is well worth a watch, he was easily quick enough, he just couldn't keep his gob shut and as a result, never got the money together to get into a half decent team. If anything it just shows that talent isn't nearly enough. I was speaking to a guy that runs an motocross team down here and he's said that slower guys are getting the team rides because while they're not that fast, they are better at social media than other riders. If it's happening at a fairly low level like that, then you can be sure that it happens higher up the tree too.

I've never got the idea of watching other people play games. I wouldn't mind competing but watching as a concept, I find bizarre. Just not for me.

Brendon Hartley is the leading contender to drive for the Toro Rosso Formula 1 team in the United States Grand Prix, with Sebastien Buemi the back-up option, Autosport has learned.

Toro Rosso needs to fill the seat alongside Daniil Kvyat at Austin after it was agreed Pierre Gasly would return to Super Formula to contest the title in the series finale on the same weekend.

It is understood Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost wants to use Austin as an opportunity to evaluate a new driver as he weighs up his 2018 driver line-up.

Gasly is favourite to get one of the seats, having impressed in his appearances in Malaysia and Japan for the team, but Tost and Red Bull are less certain about the second seat.

Hartley has emerged as the frontrunner to drive at Austin, with Tost believed to be open to the possibility of the New Zealander racing for the team next year.

The 27-year-old held the role of Red Bull's official reserve driver in 2009 and 2010 and completed one test for Red Bull in 2008 and two for Toro Rosso in 2009 before being dropped from Red Bull's junior programme.

Hartley also took part in a young driver test at Magny-Cours for Mercedes in 2012, as well as spending time in the team's simulator.

He has enough superlicence points to race in F1 but is currently contracted to Porsche and competing in the World Endurance Championship, where he could win the title this weekend at Fuji.

In addition, it is also believed he is close to a deal to race for Chip Ganassi in IndyCar next year, meaning there are contractual issues to be ironed out before his Austin appearance can be confirmed.

With that in mind, Toro Rosso and Red Bull have lined up Buemi, who raced for Red Bull's junior team between 2009 and 2011, to step in if a deal for Hartley cannot be agreed.

Meh, don't think it makes him look like a moaner at all.

I think it's more telling that Hamilton is pretty much sat alone

Grosjean really doesn't do himself any favors. He's already got a rep for being a moaner, this doesn't help that.

It was worth it for the dig at Sébastien to be fair!

Office politics, F1 style. Hamilton mentioned the wheel, but Grosjean countered with the belt thing in an effort to deflect from Vettel. Hamilton saw the two working together and ripped into Vettel re: crash. Well played sir.

Such keen observational skills, are you a F1 steward?

It's race time again!  We're off to the USA this weekend where Lewis could wrap up the championship.

Get your predictions in by the end of the day for them to count.

http://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/11089963/max-verstappen-extends-red-bull-contract-to-end-of-2020

Max Verstappen has signed a new contract with Red Bull to remain with the team until the end of 2020.

The 20-year-old is the youngest-ever winner in F1 having debuted in the sport at the age of 17 in 2015.

That's a surprise. I wonder what exit clauses he might have and will this mean Bottas gets another year extension at Mercedes. I assume Hamilton will sign a new deal in the off season.

Williams appear to be running a trousers hanger in their car in FP2.

As for Verstappen, I think that means the end of Riccardo at Red Bull, but where would he go? I love the guy and would love to see him at Ferrari rubbing Vettels nose in it again, but Ferrari aren't going to allow that to happen so it could be Mercedes, he'd be great for their image which is still a little too "German" despite them letting Hamilton do mostly as he wants between races.

That was close on Q1. Grosjean comes round a bend, and Stroll was strolling along on the racing line. Grosjean has to go wide, and Stroll turns into him. Luckily no contact was made.
