Just started this and I'm stunned at how well it starts. 4 was slow and 5 is positively glacial in comparison.

Early on in New Serena:

Spoiler

Kiryu singing "BLAKING THE LAW" in full glam rock attire with Nishiki with him is possibly one of the best things in the series so far. Incredible.

I wasn't quite in the mood for this as I kind of tailed off on Yakuza 5 and wasn't sure if I'd be able to get into this at the moment but it grabs you and drags you in before you know what's hit you.

Am I the only one who joins in shouting random Japanese words/syllables in the Oh so manly cutscenes?

Also, what does it mean when your running around and your minimap makes a sound as if to alert you to something? I can never find anything.

Typically this means you're in minimap range of your main objective (the pink dot).

I just cannot beat the disco girl. I tried about 7 or 8 times yesterday and that stupid song was stuck in my head when I was trying to get to sleep (I would give it up but I need dat final hostess). Just to make matters worse, I went outside to go and save and bloody lost to Mr Shakedown.

The worst day.

I have ploughed well over 60 hours into this and still cannot drag myself away to other games. Having completed the main story I've spent the last two weeks of evenings mopping up the sub-stories, playing the minigames and mastering Kiryu's incredibly addictive property simulator.

I did the Burusera mission directly followed by the Yanki mission. If that's whats to be expected that this is probably going to be the best Yakuza yet by some margin. Yakuza 3 was great in this regard but Yakuza 4 and what I've played of 5 are relatively dry.

I'm worried about missing side missions. Do they carry over from chapter to chapter generally?

By and large, yes. The last couple of games have been quite forgiving in terms of time-sensitive quests, in Y3 there were some that you had to complete during a certain chapter.

Missed quests open up again in premium adventure once you've completed the main game anyway (I haven't actually completed Y0 yet but I'm assuming it's the same) so I never really stress about it.

I'm pretty sure that if a substory is first available in Chapter 3 for example, you can still do it in Chapter 4+. You can definitely still do them all at the end anyway.

The only thing missable are a couple of chapter-specific trophies relating to doing a certain action when following the story.

There are points in the game where you are locked out from doing any side stuff, but as far as I can tell the substories aren't permanently missable in that sense, you can polish off any you missed in the post-game at least.

The physical version is the same price at Zavvi in case anyone prefers.

I've been trying to be patient with this since I've so much other stuff to play and it doesn't feel like long since I went through 5 but talk of it being the best in the series has made me crumble. Normally I go for disc versions but that tends to make me rush through and sell on, which I don't want to do with this. If it's the definitive Yakuza experience I want to be dipping in and out FOREVER.

Yeah I got this last night for £30 - seemed a great price.  I have played very little of the series apart from a few hours on the PS2 original but assume I won't be missing out much with starting this one?
