Gravity Rush Remastered and Gravity Rush 2

So, this is a bit lovely then.

I suppose that shouldn't be too much of a surprise for those of us who played the original, but I imagine that's not the largest number of people - even with Remastered giving it a bit of a wider audience to sell to. Even so, from the few hours I've played so far it's notably improved on the original; there's just a more solid design to the levels, while the game generally (and overworld particularly) benefits from the increased horsepower, both in terms of scale and just general amount of 'stuff' going on.

It is, as ever, a beautiful game, and even the little 'social' elements are welcome - I'm very fond of the treasure hunts where you can get and give hints from/to randoms on where to find caches of gems in the overworld by taking photographs (another nice addition, that - if a game ever benefited from a photo mode, it's this one). The gravity shifting mechanic is as fun as ever, and like the original (and like Splatoon and Star Fox) shows off the benefits of gyroscopic controls for quick, precise aiming.

Oh, and the setting and cast of characters are as bright and breezy as usual, and the simple 'combating a corrupt, malicious state' premise is reasonably cathartic in the current political climate. So, yes, lovely stuff so far, highly recommended. Just a bit of a shame it released the same day as Yakuza 0, as despite the utterly different setting and genre, I imagine there's a reasonable amount of crossover from fans of niche Sony-exclusive games filled with heart. Get both!

How are the missions this time? I've been playing through the original again via Remastered and they do let the side down a bit. It's not that they're difficult (the only one I had to retry was the irritating 'putting fires out' one in the DLC) but they feel uninspired at best and properly shite at worst - particularly the stealth bits and anything where you have to move a load of objects/people somewhere. I don't think there's anything all that different they could do with the mechanics but it definitely feels like it could be paced and/or mixed up a bit better. It's a weird game in that it's at its (glorious) best when you're going around grabbing the collectables, which tends to be the worst part of pretty much every other 3d platformer.

It's so beautiful and charming though, so the flaws are very easy to forgive. Really nice to play it again with vastly more useable controls and at a silky 60fps too.

And that Pleajeune gypsy jazz shit! Wonderful.

finished this (gravity rush 2) maybe a week or so ago, really enjoyed it, it's a lovely game. the characters and little side stories are often great. and the maybe the main thing i like about it is the general movement, sliding, gravity shifting, walking on sides of buildings etc. never really gets old - making even mundane collecting crystals fun. it looks and sounds great too.

but it's not all good, imo anyway, the missions vary in quality quite a lot, some being great fun, but others range from boring to frustrating. there's also a massive variety of different types of gameplay in the main/side missions/challenges, so i guess it's likely some of these wouldn't be as good as others. although even the not so good missions often have nice/funny little stories to go with them. and some of the fighting suffers similarly to the first game in being quite frustrating. some things have been improved, like throwing stuff, which was annoying in the original, but now it's a valid in a fight, and maybe the best tactic, and plays a part in some of the most fun side missions too.

i really liked the treasure hunts where you find treasure using pictures taken by other players, then you take a picture to help others find it.

i did all the side missions which is unusual for me, 38 hours total. something i really liked in the first game was the sliding/gravity shifting timetrial challenges, which are great fun here but there doesn't seem to be as many of them.

the plot is probably a bit silly but how it built up and uncovers stuff at the end was great imo.

Only just saw this. Amazing!

Reminded me of those great ads and campaigns Sony did in the late 90s and early 2000s.

The game's really good as well. The 6 in Edgetm was a bit harsh imo.

And Saints Row 2. And a whole bunch of other great 6's. An Edge 6 is basically the secret, highest acclaim that they can give something.

That said, I do wish Gravity Rush 2's mission structure was as inventive and mindblowing as its core concept. They give you some of the coolest powers to be found anywhere, then take them away far, far too often for my liking.

Not much love for Gravity Rush 2 on here? I'm surprised, it's pretty great - yes it has its flaws but it's one of the best looking games of all time in my opinion, and no game comes close to the pure sense of freedom and exhileration you get flying around. I've got tons of screenshots and photo mode pics to share, anyone know a good place for that? Here's a few for ya from my playthrough (please click on them for a better resolution, they look way better!):

I got 2 for Christmas. It's wonderful. These games are just so much fun to move around in. I feel kind of bad getting these in the sales - they deserve to be successful. Were they by any chance?

I bought this a few days ago and have been playing it for a couple of days. I really like quite a lot.

once in the city it looks great. I’m still getting my head around the capabilities of the gravity stuff as it’s been yonks since I finish the first game on vita.

Glad I bought it....can’t believe they are turning the servers off :o

Edit- apparently they were meant to go down on the 19th but instead they will go down 19th July this year. Fair enough but still I think you should at least plan in 2-3 years bare minimum.
