This is one of those games where you don't really know what to do with yourself once it's over. Playing any other narrative driven game anytime soon is going to feel like such a step down in so many ways, I just can't be arsed starting another one at the moment.

Finished. I could write paragraphs but they'd sound confused and dumbfounded. I feel very conflicted about some aspects of it and need to play it again - just like the first one! Which is what I wanted. I feel like I've just swallowed a building whole and I'm trying to digest it.

I find hour long chunks of play are enough for the gameplay loop,: a bit of scavenging, exploring and reading, some combat, reach a location, cut scene.

The game does repeat that formula so even though it has "just a few more minutes" factor, it does get a little repetitive.

The combat is ace though, and some of the environmental story-telling is top notch.

I'm part way through Day 2 and there was a sequence where I pegged it past a ton of enemies and to the safety of a cut scene, so I probably skipped 30mins+  of stealth, combat and exploring there. Early Day 2 spoiler:

Tracking Tommy to the black smoke there are a series of small combat areas with drops and you can basically run and jump down 2-3 of them. I ended up in a basement full of guys with axes and gas masks, and no idea what that was about so not sure if I was supposed to approach from a different position or if there was a cut scene explaining that I didn't trigger.

I spent a long time on that area and never found that bit! Something to look forward to on NG+!

Lack of time to play meant I've only just finished Day One. Probably a good thing really because I don't want to rush it. I think I'm enjoying just walking around the environment and scavenging more than anything else which is a surprise.

Intrigued by the Joel stuff. What did he do to these people? Are they Fireflys pissed at what he did in the first game? I feel like there's more to it than that.

:D

How am I seven hours into this? I still feel like I'm nowhere near the quarter-way mark.

Spoilers (Day 1)

Spoiler

Thought I'd be a clever fucker and lure a clicker or two through a window and Molotov them as they came. I threw it. And waited. And waited. The the fire didn't come. I think it was literally on top of me before I realised I'd thrown an empty bottle instead.

I didn't scream. Well, externally.

The level of improvisation in this is really something. Sony talk to Konami, and give ND them the keys to the MGS licence for a weekend yeah? Let them take it for a spin.

Day 1 spoilers.

Spoiler

Can we talk about how the game gradually prepares to introduce dogs? I mean, it's not subtle - you're fighting people who like to call themselves Wolves, there are kennels and bags of dog chow in the WLF safehouses, and LITERAL GIANT GOLD DOG STATUES in the hotel lobby- but I kind of like it.

I hate to say this but...

I’ve shot every single dog I’ve encountered so far.

Yep. I also make sure to arrow the owner first so that they have that moment of abandoned sadness before they go. I'm basically a walking narrative dissonance machine.

I have Outer Wilds waiting to play after completing this. Not sure if you've already played it, but it seems like the perfect game to play after an epic like this.

I'm gonna save Survivor for PS5.

Yup . Same . I can’t do much longer than that it’s too intense .

I think it's finally getting to me.  I ended a play session this morning asking myself if "I'd burned or sniped enough dogs".

Have I?  Can there ever be too great a quantity of hostile dogs burned?

Video games.

VIDEO GAMES!

Jesus wept, those explosive traps. (Explosive trap spoilers)

Spoiler

I put one down to hopefully stop someone in their tracks and they just stopped existing as anything other than a collection of meats. There was Geoff all over. Their partner seemed as stunned as I was.

Shame you couldn’t use your full skillset on those shitty tutorial kids.

Think it’s funny to chuck snow on my face, eh? Here enjoy this FUCKING NAIL BOMB you little shit.

It's a shame it's so much harder to turn on debug functions or change RAM values or enable cheats these days. I bet we're just one Boolean flag switch away from a grisly child murder scandal to outdo Hot Coffee.

I seem to be the only unlucky soul to have glitching on all the cutscenes and even sometimes set pieces like stealth kills. Pissing me off now.

I've tried rebooting, defragging but no joy. Perhaps it's the heat, but the fans don't get loud so....

I guess I could try uninstalling and reinstalling. My saves will still work won't they?

I want to play this tonight but scared to turn on my PSN (thermometer says it’s 31 degrees in here). The game gives the fans a workout at the best of times, if I play it now might turn my PS4 into a white phosphorous IED.
