@Stanley @Thor @Down by Law

But this goes against my sensible adult decision I posted the other day where I'd cancelled everything and pre-loaded digitally.

I've finished it once! Currently up to end of Day 1 on NG+.

In a moment of weakness I saw this in stock on Argos and thought "fuck it!"

The pad in the damaged packaging is being collected by Currys on Monday to be refunded and I can sell the game in the pack for about £40 so that's £90 off the £350 straight away.

Look at me, trying to legitimise my purchase to like minded individuals.

 They missed a trick not putting guitar strings on the touch pad though.

Also, I don't think the game ever tells you this but you can jump on enemies from above to take them out instantly, Nathan Drake style.

Seriously? Do you use the jump button then attack or just fall, attack?

Jump button definitely works. :) Just jump on an enemy from above and you'll do an automatic takedown. Not sure if it works on all types of Infected, but it definitely works on human enemies.

Can you put in spoiler tags where you're up to in the second half?

Spoiler

First part of the searching for amputation supplies mission, just left the aquarium.

It's just the usual Sony beautiful world with nothing to  do in it syndrome that leads to boredom. Absolutely stunning set dressing and all the rest of it, but gameplay wise they must come up with something more interesting than walking up to drawers and hitting triangle>combat>repeat, because that is almost all you do in this world apart from the occasional set piece. The environment, like God Of War, is just a backdrop, there's no consequence or trepidation to exploring this world. It should be dangerous and intimidating, but there's nothing that makes it feel post apocalyptic or challenging to you.

I'm not saying every game should be like Dark Souls (every game should be like Dark Souls) but remember the first time poking your way into Darkroot, absolutely terrified of every corner and sound, inching along, sweating and panicking. Every environment in Dark Souls had its own challenges besides the enemies. There should at least be some of that intensity to exploring the landscape in Last Of Us II, not just another A>B trek punctuated with the exact same gameplay which is all carried out at waist height.

So this has definitely lost its shine for me, the storytelling has got lazy (flashbacks for pity's sake, notes everywhere) and if anything the gameplay progression has rewound itself which is incredibly frustrating. It felt like things were about to go full-tilt mayhem, but instead it got really slow and dragged out. I'll stick at it and hope it picks up.

Hard disagree with Nasty's post. The moments of calm where you are just soaking up the world and scavenge supplies are absolutely needed. There's a lot of combat encounters, but the game wouldn't work nearly as well it was just that. You need that balance and the game does a good job of mixing up its core gameplay components with a mix of horror, more bombastic set-pieces, environmental puzzles, narrative stuff etc

Unrelated, but just upgrading a weapon in a menu in games won't cut it anymore after the lavish workbench animations where you are physically applying the upgrades. :D

I know I’m near the start (seven hours in!) but are we playing the same game?Every time I go near a building I’m holding my breath because I keep accidentally getting bum rushed by infected I didn’t spot or interrupting someone’s chat with their mate about... whatever you talk about when you’re a prick in the apocalypse.

You've still got some of the best and most intense set-pieces of the game ahead of you, including a couple which are genuinely quite scary. The gameplay loop itself never really changes though.

Absolutely stunning set dressing and all the rest of it, but gameplay wise they must come up with something more interesting than running up and hitting enemies>weapon breaks>find new weapon>repeat, because that is almost all you do in this world apart from the occasional boss fight. The environment, like Mario Odyssey, is just a backdrop, there's no consequence or trepidation to exploring this world. I'm not saying every game should be like Bloodborne (every game should be like Bloodborne) but remember the first time poking your way into Yharnam, absolutely terrified of every corner and sound, inching along, sweating and panicking. Every environment in Bloodborne had its own challenges besides the enemies. There should at least be some of that intensity to exploring the landscape in Zelda Breath of the Wild, not just another A>B trek punctuated with the exact same gameplay which is all carried out while standing upright.

@Uncle Nasty I'll give you the criticism regarding the notes. While I love finding and reading them, there are way too many, and most of the situations described within the notes, especially those written during the outbreak, would not have people writing fucking journals, they'd be texting their loved ones on their mobile phones. But your comment about the gameplay is way off the mark for me, and most here I believe. Personally I have relished every encounter.

Also, your absurd reference to God of War is just that: fucking absurd. :P

Thing is @Uncle Nasty is right it is walking around scavenging a lot of the time, difference is I find it totally engrossing just taking in the environments and looking in every nook & cranny - also the controls as you ‘sweep’ a room on entering it are just gorgeous - it feels great and really tactile. As a depiction of society fallen into beautiful ruin it’s intoxicating and really really affecting.

How do you charge your mobile phone/send messages if the power stations/telecommunications are offline because of a zombie outbreak? :sherlock:

Have you tried starting your PS4 in safe mode.

Try turning it on and then loading it up then just pull the power and boot it again.

Yeah tried that. This morning it still did it (was hoping the cooler weather would help), so I ripped the top off and sat a couple of fan on it. One on top one behind. Was perhaps a little better but got worse as I progressed.

I was referring to the notes during the outbreak. Perhaps I should have said initial outbreak. :)

I dunno, since this pandemic has kicked off there have been a LOT of passive aggressive notes taped up around here. Although Ellie has yet to find a “DO NOT leave big bags here THIS IS NOT A DUMP” or “NO STRIMMING BEFORE 8AM!!!”.

Could be your HDD? Might be worth swapping that out before getting a new machine, and if it's not that you have a spare portable HDD. :)

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game? Back up your save first though.

Totally agree, and for me as well I love thinking about the person whose flat/room/office/shop I'm scavenging. Naughty Dog have put so much effort into building people's personalities (who you don't even get to meet) through the furniture, posters on the walls, notes, etc. in every building. The world truly feels lived in and I love exploring every part of it. Like you say, every nook and cranny has something to offer.

Good idea! Though typical timing in that last week my nephew texted me to ask if I had a spare ext.HDD he could buy (due to the massive CoD update). I let him have my spare 1TB ext.HDD for nothing!

I do have one plugged into my Xbox, I'll have a look to see if I can fit everything on the system storage and try it on the PS4.

If that's not feasible I'll probs get a new one and try it.

I know, it's got to be a hardware problem as I seem to be the only person suffering with it.

Not buying a new one when the 5 is so near, though I do have a standard PS4 boxed up not doing anything. (Not really mine as I gave it to my daughter to take to uni, she's long back but will want it in her room when we move next week.)

Okay, thanks, I will see it to the end, I just might rush it a bit. Already skipping cut scenes.

The cutscenes hide the loading screens though, so you're not going to get to the end any faster!

Well I found a cure for the glitching......finish the game.

Might check a few other games to see if it's terminal, not overly bothered if it has gone tits up as i probs won't be buying anymore Playstation games this side of the 5 launch.

I think I’ve reached the end now. Probably one more session tomorrow morning. It’s been such a great game - not for a long, long time (or ever?) have I finished a game in about a week. A testament to the quality of Naughty Dog’s work.
