SO been binging the shit out of it.

Never even gave it another thought before, because I don't really give a shit about the royals either way, and that's just for grandmas or something. Purely because a couple of female friends said they were watching it the other week (I think because the new season is out and all over netflix), I looked it up on imdb and it was 8.7, which is killer!

So on that imdb basis, here I am, at the end of season 2  in a matter of days!

We started watching this on a whim last week after thinking it wouldn't be our sort of thing at all, then ended up hooked as well. We're pacing ourselves at an episode a night and we've just finished with the bonfire near Churchill's pond. Claire Foy is absolutely remarkable. There are times where it feels as if I just hear the Queen's voice coming out of her mouth- like nobody I know in real life but so instantly familiar after years of hearing her on television. I'm really going to miss her (and Lithgow) when they're written out of the series.

Yep, we started watching it over the last few evenings too, it's far less dry than I thought it would be and actually makes this family of dysfunctional weirdos one you can relate to. Matt Smith as Prince Philip is remarkable, and Hot Princess Margaret is... confusing me.

Funny you mention Claire Foy's voice though, it feels sometimes like everyone gets to speak normally but she has to do this weird impression of the Queen because we all know what she sounds like. I guess it'll be the same with Thatcher when we get there.

Thatcher is so badly acted that I've had to give up on S4. I have no care nor empathy for the Charles and Diana story that is front and centre, nor the actors that portray them, either so it was a pretty easy, if disappointing, bailout.

The first two seasons were magnificent TV (even as a non Royalist etc, etc) so I may just go back and rewatch those.

Just saw the Aberfan episode.

Spoiler

Wasn't really expecting that sort of emotional impact from this series. There's a shot from the trench where it pans upwards and the coffins just keep going that was shattering. Philip being so utterly humbled by the hymn was a nice touch and I wonder if he felt that way in real life.

We had to pause at one point to collect ourselves and carry on. Unexpectedly gruelling viewing but I can't see the rest of S3 surpassing it.

Somehow I can't reconcile Colman's distant, cold Elizabeth with Foy's interpretation. She had sparkle and charm, which seems to have disappeared completely by 1966.

Neither can I, but, in fairness, Coleman's interpretation feels more like the actual Queen.

Been watching this again lately. I absolutely love, love, love Olivia Coleman. She’s absolutely perfect as the queen to me. Her and the queen mother are portrayed exactly how I’d imagine them (because I’ve read a lot about the queen mother, and she was a cold hearted cunt of the times.)

It’s a very, very believed factor amongst a lot of autistic women that the queen is autistic. And I think, even though we don’t actually know that, and Coleman doesn’t purposefully play her as autistic, she could so easily be interpreted as so in this.
It’s extremely subtle, and the portrayal of the emotional limitations she personally experienced (because Margaret was not the same, but that’s not a second child thing as Ann is a lot like her mother) is bang on for me.

John Major being played by Jonny Lee Miller. I'm going to need to see what they do in makeup to make that work.

That's pretty great casting. Looking at that photo you can see where they're going. It's in the eyes and jawline. Stick some glasses on him and the wig and I think he'll look remarkable. Similar setup to Gillian when she was cast.

Watching from the start and just went past the coronation. Doing some reading whilst watching, and realised there’s quite a strong possibility that Prince George might be crowned very close to the 1000th anniversary of coronations in Westminster Abbey.

Shame it wouldn’t be another William, but I doubt Charles could hold out till 120 odd.

Fucking hell. Season 5 is telling us that Bashir exploited Princess Diana, lied to her, and stoked any paranoia she was being followed or spied on. Falsifying documents to do so. Really? And played on a her affection for his racial background. They have to have proof, surely.

It’s awful. One of the main reasons she’s not alive is because she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. Can only speculate the rush of getting in that car and the urge to get away despite your driver being drunk. It’s not nice to think any desperation to escape was artificially enhanced by this angle that was just to get her on Panorama.

The casting this season - Diana aside - seems so much worse than the other seasons. I wonder if that's just because we're all more familiar with what the Royal Family looked like at this point in their lives? I mean I have no real idea what Prince Philip looked like in the 1950s, he could conceivably have looked like Matt Smith for all I know, but I know damn well he didn't look like Jonathan Pryce in the 1990s.

In fact maybe it's just that there are more recognisable faces in there this time around. Dominic West, Jonathan Pryce and Jonny Lee Miller are all very recognisable in their own right, and it takes you out of it a bit. At least Gillian Anderson got the frightwig and the stupid voice to disguise her a bit.

Was very taken by the older group Captain Townsend. Thought that was a very handsome older man indeed. And felt like I recognised him a bit as well.

Fucking Timothy Dalton ffs 🤦‍♀️ Honestly, how do I dress each day??

He looks like Henry Cavill’s dad or older self. I need to see that happen.

Series was meh. Nothing happened. Stretching the last decade out to two series was a mistake. Wouldn’t be one of rewatch, and I’ve seen the others at least three or four times.

The Bashir thing was everywhere a while back, it was a pretty big news story.

Kind of amazing when the crown is people's news source!

As far as seatbelts goes - nah no rush to get away or some kind of stress that means you've forgotten to wear a seatbelt. Instead someone chose not to wear a seatbelt.

People used to do it all the time, it was far more common back in the day.

Most likely she didn't want to, so didn't.

It totally impedes you looking out the back window at people chasing you so I find it totally believable.
