Started watching series one tonight. It's a pretty good show, but I don't know if I want to go all the way through with it, purely because I fucking hate the Royal family.

I had a cheeky wee skip forward to see Gillian Anderson's turn as Thatcher. She doesn't disappoint, but it's a much hammier turn than I thought we'd be getting.

Which episode is it where she completely fucks Scotland for an entire generation?

That is an understatement. Her constant gurning and facial twitching/affectations are just awful.

I've only watched the first episode so far but the moping, dopey Charles is a bit of a dull slog to watch, just as he was in the last season, so this season may try my patience a little. I certainly enjoyed the first two seasons way more than the last but that might be because all the principle actors were so good.

That said, it remains an incredible, sumptuous, looking TV show.

I just started season 4 and am loving it.

Can anyone give me a rating / guide on whether the previous seasons are worth going back to and how they compare to this one? I did watch a couple of season 1 when it originally aired but they just didn't do it for me. Perhaps it took a while to bed in.

One and two are equally excellent, three was the weakest but not much in it.

Matt Smith remains the best thing about the whole series.

I have to say - as a fan of this show from the beginning - that I thought this was the most out-and-out fun season yet.

Watching Gillian Anderson and Olivia Coleman spar was tremendously enjoyable. I agree Anderson’s portrayal of Thatcher was wholeheartedly served up with ham and a side of relish, but that was only one half of her performance; the latter half was genuinely nuanced and empathetic.

Coleman was an empathy machine throughout - that woman can do more acting with her eyes than most can with their whole bodies. She perfectly portrayed a woman out of time and out of her depth, who is also an absolute bulldog. I loved every minute she was on screen.

My only complaint is that, covering the entire Thatcher era, we didn’t get enough in ten episodes - I was left wanting much more. More Anderson, more Coleman... and much more Tobias Menzies, who had me laughing before he even said a word!

And can I say - is it a spoiler?!

Spoiler

The cameo by Claire Foy warmed the cockles of my heart. So wonderful to see her slip so effortlessly back into the role she created and owned.

This series more of than any so far makes me feel how truncated the history is. The Falklands or Charles & Di could have easily been the entire season, instead it chooses very specific moments and dramatises them well. So you get the story of the Queen’s cousins, and Michael Fagin, being given as much attention as historically far more well known events. It’s really refreshing.

There’s a touch more of the Channel 5 docu-soaps about this series because of Charles and Di, but it’s all done with such skill that the comparison becomes superficial. I thought the way they introduced Diana for the first time was magnificent.

I thought that was superb, real return to form.

The drap back-story to Charles paid off in this series, it makes his treatment of Diana much more understandable and both sides come across as victims, much like every member of the royal family in this. Except the Duke of Edinburgh, who continues to look like he's actually enjoying all the skiing and free booze. Oh and Andrew of course! Glad they got a peado refernce in early there.

The Aprateid episode is one of the best they've ever done, even if the cheese factor was a bit high and the "man in bedroom" episode was at that level too.

You'll think the same of Thatcher at the end of this as you did at the start, but I did feel sorry for her for a while. Then she gives you an insight into her awful awful mind and you remember she stands against all your core values. Great performance as well, I forgot I was watching an actor after a while.

My only issue is why the house of commons looks so wrong when everything else looks so right.

I thought it was a bit of a ‘chubby hmm’ moment, a bit too on the nose, but I did appreciate the show needed to acknowledge the wretched legacy Andrew has left in the real world.

Just started season 4. I saw the synopsis for episode 1 and I

Spoiler

knew what happened to Mountbatten.

Waiting for it to happen was awful. I’m interested in how much of the Troubles is involved in this series. I wonder how it will show it and what people will take from it.

Gillian Anderson makes me wish I could like Thatcher. I have such a crush on her. Anderson, not Thatcher. She was a cunt.

God, they’re utterly brazen about the affair, aren’t they. I can’t imagine what it must be like for William and Harry knowing this series has been made.
I don’t know what’s worse: portraying the truth of things that were said and done, or any creative licence being taken to dramatise their mother’s mental health, unhappiness and slow demise.

With two more series to come I'm looking forward to what they'll do with William, Kate, Harry and Meghan.

Perhaps Meghan will play herself?

As ckny says I don’t think they’re going that far ahead. Which is all the more mystifying as to why they went through events this season at such a hell of a pace.

Imelda Straunton has very big shoes to fill having to follow Olivia Coleman, it must be said. I’ll be rooting for her.
