Destiny Wrath of the Machine chat

A thread to chat and discuss the thread. Proposed rules: given you pick up the raid quest from Shiro whatsisface, I suggest titling which section you're discussing using either "Opening the door" or the name of the encounter just before a spoiler for now, and then we can loosen up later.

Anyway, discussing the first proper boss encounter inside the raid:

Spoiler

Our team got to Vosik on Friday night, and sussed out a reasonable amount of how it worked prior to calling it a night. (We also spent a fair bit of time exploring between the front door and the fight, so we were going quite slowly.)

Anyway, we reconvened last night nice and early in order to defeat Vosiks (?) and move on. We thought we had it somewhat sorted, but could not get the timing of the bombs right. My God, we threw ourselves at it. Sometimes, we got 1 bomb to work. Sometimes 2. Never 3. Sometimes, 0 bombs landed. We had a really good run once, but fell foul of the enrage, and then a second enrage-terminated run really sapped our will.

It was only at 12:30am I think we finally figured out what we'd been doing wrong - trying to individually throw our bombs at the last moment, rather than more simply throwing them at the same time. We'd been suspicious at what felt like an arbitrary, hard to find, and very tight window for a while - but every time we tried to experiment with just snychronising, it seemed worse or no difference. Really tough.

We're going to give it another go tonight - hopefully it'll go smoother (no hints - even oblique ones - please even if I'm still missing something.)

I like it so far. A good raid.

1st boss mechanic tips:

Have a designated thrower caller to do a "3-2-1-throw" countdown. The other two should say "got nade" when they pick theirs up so the caller knows when to start the count. As long as everyone throws within a second or so you should get the 1k damage and two 100k damages to the shield.

Also, have at least one person with a void sword to fuck up the captains that spawn.

It's pretty fantastic all in all.

Forgetting mechanics and actual gameplay as I'm sure we'll discuss those more when more of us have finished, for me the real achievement here is in the environments and general art direction.

No spoilers but each of the areas have been gorgeous to look at and be in, the music is the best yet and the last area that we got to last night was simply breathtaking as you arrive in it and make your way to the boss area.

Made it to the final boss with an LFG group on Saturday night (but had to stop cause it was late). It was smooth sailing to be fair. I was initially worried about being under-levelled, but the combat wasn't a problem at all. Like all good Raids, the challenge lies in coordination, communication and teamwork.

4 hours on the superb final encounter tonight with a group of randoms but we finally did it & completed the raid just in time for the weekly reset. Unbearably tense moments as we realised that we had a real chance of pulling it off just as long as no-one fucked up in the final seconds.

Final boss mechanics spoiler:

Spoiler

It is a complex fight with a lot of elements to keep on top of & it can feel like sheer chaos at times but we found that calling out each side's 'Empowered' status & assigning one person from each side to be the one to switch & cover if needed made the whole thing go smoothly. Depositing the cannons in the middle & then unloading their charged shots on him in the main DPS phase ruined his health too.

The Atheon fight is still the best I think (being the relic-holder in that fight is my favourite thing in the whole of Destiny) but this may well be a close second.

Will have to give it another few weeks & completions before settling on a final opinion but on first impressions it's up there with Vault of Glass for me. Visually & sonically the best of the lot, that's for sure. Feels like the perfect length too & I found every mechanic great fun to execute & thoroughly enjoyed every encounter.

Loot/rewards spoiler:

Spoiler

The final boss dropped the scout rifle which is an absolute beast! As well as Triple Tap if you constantly hit crits it feeds ammo directly from your reserves too, to potentially give you something like a 40-round magazine. It's like the old Black Hammer in some respects & perfect for strike bosses.

Seems like Bungie cottoned on to the fact that making the raid rewards actually desirable again makes that endorphin rush at the moment of triumph all the sweeter.

B Team beat the Archon first boss last night and the feeling was finger whippingly exceptional. The mechincs were exactly what has been mentioned above, it was just good team work and luck that got us through! Always bloody forget about

Spoiler

the screens!!

Then made our way to the next section and wiped, but it was midnight so we called it, restarted the raid to hunt for the

Spoiler

hidden chest and Fragment

then went I bed on a high. Took me ages to drift off I think because of the adrenaline!

More tonight hopefully!

Second boss encounter:

Spoiler

So our team took on the Siege Engine tonight, after trying it out only a bit last night.

We were really worried for a while that we didn't have the Light levels needed, but it turned out we just really needed a better plan and teamwork. So after a slight frustration break in the Tower cashing in engrams, we went back to it, and surprise surprise we suddenly started cracking it.

Our tactic ended up, I suspect, mitigating for lack of Light somewhat: we took down the Captain to get the parts, and then shunted them over to the right hand side (looking back at the snowplough) to prep for carrying them over the small girders. Then we focussed quite heavily on adds and mines before starting to make a serious effort carting the parts in earnest.

It worked, but we had seconds to spare. Every time we tried to do it quicker though, we didn't have the damage to keep the enemies under control.

I think we got it (in the nick of time) on our second proper go after that.

Really fucking epic finish when you nail it, I loved that. We had a proper moment of panic when we realised what was happening.

I have 4 pairs of arms now whilst Marmite has 4 rocket launchers. Praise be to the RNGesus.

Smashed through to DZ without a wipe tonight. Got all the chests and Siva fragments in less than an hour. Spent a touch longer on the DZ but got there in the end.

This is going to be easily doable in under 2 hours once it's all clicking and we are levelled up a bit.

After playing about 10 hours without a clear before reset we did it in an hour and 40 last night, and that was with some time for me to die a lot getting clusters. It helped that three of the team had logged a couple of clears, and one small tweak to the final boss strat that made all the difference.

you can ADS the scorch cannons to zoom in and shoot servitors without leaving your zone. Means you only need to think about getting empowered people to the right place.

Decent loot but nothing amazing, personally. Hope the alt has better luck tonight.

We cleared the next encounter after Siege Engine tonight:

Spoiler

So the last boss has two phases! Unexpected, although we did sort of figure out it wasn't the end before we completed it, just on account of there being no health bar or name.

Anyway, we got the mechanic pretty quickly, but had a much harder time getting our tactics to a point where they could complete the last round of 9 servitors/bombs.

And we've had a few goes at the presumably final boss now. We can get his shields down, but not inflict any useful damage. More work to do.

Pretty confident we'll beat it this week. I hope.

Good times.

Yeah, Weavus has it too.

Can't say I'm really feeling the final boss battle. Some random elements that are winding me up. I remember getting a bit fucked off with Oryx at around the same time last year so hopefully everything will finally slot into place tomorrow.

I'm not sure what happened with the timings on our runs but I jumped into Dave's attempt after ours and we would have cleared it first couple of times if someone had not missed the jump (bounced off his legs) on the final round twice. We cleared it on the third run but wiped as he died but still got the rewards.

I think we just need a fresh attempt tonight and a few minutes at the start to make sure everyone knows what they need to be doing as it can get a bit chaotic during the heat of the battle. We also need to make sure we use a tether and bubble optimally to get the DPS up.

What are those random elements? Spoilered of course. Have to say it doesn't feel like that to me - we did it first time last night and as long as you communicate and take the right positions you can easily cope with being dealt a bad hand.

Took us about 90 minutes start to finish last night, including the exotic puzzle and me disconnecting for five minutes because my internet is held together with string.

Random elements that were winding Moose up:

Who is empowered, when the empowered changes person over time, where he teleports to. It was the changing of empowered person just as they were about to dunk him that wiped us a few times, like they were jumping over him when it changed. It's odd as it never happened on the completions I did with a couple of other groups. I'm sure there are messages about it about to change but it was too chaotic to be able to notice those.

Edit: doh!

Righto:

So the empowerment cycles immediately after every slam. The little DPS opportunities you get after the first two slams are actually not about damage, but getting ready for the next cycle while setting up for the third DPS phase. So as soon as someone dunks you call out who's empowered again and make sure you have the three lanes covered. If you're not empowered, do DPS. If you are, make sure you're in position before you even think about shooting him, and stop a little early to make sure you're ready to move if needed.

Also every empowered person should be able to cover two spots. Left can do left and the centre pit, right can do right and the centre pit, mid can do mid (which is what we call the bit where you spawn for some reason) or pit but should mostly be focusing on mid, because you have two people looking out for the central spawn.

Aksis shows where he's going to teleport to with a little siva trail before he goes but it's very quick and unless you're really looking for it you won't see it.

But yeah, know your positions, make sure you call out empowereds as soon as they change after a slam and save all the damage for the third phase, which is the longest. Hunter tether, weapons bubble, sunsinger with touch of flame and viking funeral flinging grenades, charged cannons (which you should be dropping off at mid once you've killed the servitors).
