Synths and Similar - an electronic music gear thread

Recommended Posts

Fallen down a bit of a rabbit hole during lockdown, have not recorded anything of note since finishing my music degree 20 years ago.

Was bought NI Komplete Select for my birthday, which I shortly after upgraded to the full Komplete, which gives a massive amount of content.

Next thing I know, I now own the Komplete Control S61 MK2. It's glorious and the DAW integration is sublime. Pretty lights!

Hope this is OK to ask but does anyone know if you can get Komplete on disc?, have the serial but its been a pita to download any of them on slow internet. Was hoping I could get the discs from somewhere and copy them over and get Access to activate them

I don't think you can get them on a cd/blu-ray, but I know that some of the higher packages come in their own hard disk. Worth checking the NI website through.

Still loving my S61 MK2 a couple of weeks in, the integration with Cubase is fantastic particularly when it comes to hands on mixing.

So I sold some assorted bits I wasn't using and began my slow descent into bankruptcy/divorce:

I'm telling myself 84hp is plenty and no one ever got addicted by smoking it just the once. I don't believe me though.

Hi folks, apologies for the cross post, but I don't know if that's such a Bad Thing like it was on usenet days. Anyway, I asked this not really knowing where the best place to ask was, and then found this thread. I need some DJ monitors, feels people here may be able to help with this sort of thing. I really don't know what I'm looking for really so I'm a bit afraid of investing money in the wrong kind of thing....thanks!

Just had notification my Nanoloop hardware unit is being shipped. Backed this ages ago. The KS hasn't been great, very poor communication and hardly any updates. I have a horrible feeling this isn't going to be great, but we'll see when it arrives.

I was very close to backing that but resisted in the end. I hope it's good when it arrives and it's just been covid stress/general 2020-ness to blame for the lack of updates etc.

I got mine over the weekend. It's a strange piece of kit, essentially a circuit board with a thick layer of perspex bolted on and the buttons mounted on that. You have to load the software onto it via an audio cable. Very tricky to use as it's all just LEDs and button-combos you have to remember from the manual. Feels a bit rickety, the buttons wobble and spin on the unit I have. Sound quality is good though. Not sure how much use I'll get from this but we'll see.

Not my video but this'll give you a good idea of what the unit does.

So I've managed to go from that to this. When people call it Eurocrack they aren't joking...

Wow, you have a Performer! Did you build it?

I wish I could say yes, but I'm not quite up to that yet, bought it from a friend who does the "build three, keep one" thing.

I have DIYd a bunch of stuff, all through-hole so far though. The Zlob Diode Chaos was my most recent build.

I wish I could say I was game for SMD soldering but even my Radio Music ended up sounding a bit funny and it took the wind out of my sails. I've seen a few Performer videos and it looks like an ideal alternative to an Eloquencer.

Yeah I've been too scared to try it so far too, although I received a Feedback Modules Squeeze kit in the post recently, so I'm going to give it a go soon. I think I enjoy DIY just as much as actually playing with my rack tbh.

The Performer is great, does the Elektron conditional stuff, can do some nice generative things and the four CV ins allow some neat modulation of various parameters. I've not really dug too deep into the curve tracks yet, but they seem like a cool way to do complex LFO/envelope stuff. Oh and it's acting as a midi to CV bridge for my MPC. All in all, very happy with it.

Point to us where your UK number one and tracks you contributed to Ocean's Eleven are I guess?

The dude writes populist electronica, he managed to get the Elvis/JXL track into a commercial this year, 17 years after it came out. I'm not sure shitting on him while he's actually successfully producing music people like and listen to is really a worthwhile endeavour is it?

I think this should be for software too, I mean why not? So if anyone isn't aware of it already - https://vital.audio/

Basically it's a free wavetable synth similar to Serum or Pigments. You can pay and get more wavetables and presets or subscribe but the synth is free - really good idea that I'm assuming is to encourage sound-designers. But if you're old-fashioned like me and prefer to make their own sounds from scratch then there you go!

It's stupidly-powerful, amazing unique features and lots of modulation.

It's purely my opinion. There's a point where the gear stops and the music starts. Hey if he needs all that to make the music he does then fair play to him, and he's spending his hard-earned cash on what he loves doing, fair enough. Personally I don't hear all that gear in the production, simple as that.

Ha ha, I'm totally with you on the 'black panels only'.

If they don't do a black version it's not in my rack.

The only thing stopping me buying a bunch of replacement panels for the stuff in the bottom case and going 100% black panel is that there is none for the Twin Waves that I can find.

Not done an update on here in a long time:

This was the state of play recently during yet another round of studio tetris..

studiosetup-2020-12a.thumb.jpg.08c7aa41d16abe00932532c4c3994100.jpg

A few bits not in that pic as they're out on loan with a mate, including the little Behringer Crave and the Modal CraftSynth. Still waiting on the arrival of the Pipes too (long overdue Kickstarter, sample player thing).  I have a bunch of random midi controllers elsewhere not in the pic too.

This thing looks great!

I really want to play around with some eurorack stuff but I also like having money

Yeah that looks amazing. Trying not to think about it too much because I have neither space nor cash for one.

My latest acquisition is one of these:

Sounds great, and I absolutely love the design. The gold on black looks fantastic IRL. Instruo vibes but hippy instead of steampunk.

I've posted in here a while back, I'd mentioned my complete lack of knowledge with synthesis and music creation. I'd bought a ton of little gadgets on whims. Thinking I could go back to my old Acid/House/Rave days. I haven't been to any clubs or events since an outdoor all-nighter back in 2012 and I loved it but the combination of a big tent in a bumpy field, some potent stimulants causing excess freaky dancing, long after my ankles had gave in, which caused me to want to dial 999 in the morning to take me home on a stretcher (I didn't and they never, unfortunately) had made me realise I'd passed the time to re-live that massive part of my youth. Fuck old age. Well, fuck all night bopping in farmer Giles field really but anyway....

I decided I'd have my mid-life crisis not under the stars but in my flat, noodling. So I bought all these little things, things I'd actually envisioned dabbling with when I heard Acid Trax for the first time or bought Hot Lemonade. Acid squeak boxes. I bought a Pioneer DJ mixer, a Kaossilator Pro and Kaoss pad 3, a Monotron, an Akai MPK Mini, a Volca Drum, a Volca Beats and finally a Minibrute 2. I was all set to delve into the world of sampling and making Acid sounds. Yeah, I'd over did it. In a big way. I hardly touched any of it. Completely overwhelmed, of course. My longing for the old days and being told by my mates and fellow psychonauts that my music knowledge would lead to me becoming a DJ or in some way connected to the scene and music production, silly come down waffle we all engaged in, well, that reminiscing had caused a pushing 50 year old me to go daffy. I'd ran way before I could even walk. I suppose I enjoyed just looking at them all, and running the feather duster over them.

I did mess with a few things back in the day, had a dabble with an SL1200 setup, bit of Tracker on the Amiga, Yamaha DJX nonsense in the mid 90s. But I had other bigger things going on.

Anyway, sorry for the waffle, what I'm saying is I've had a longing for the feeling I had in the late 80s to early 90s, best time of my life. I went nuts buying a ton of shit which of course overwhelmed me, but finally I took a step back, focused on one fairly simple little box, then another to add some beats, and so found my noodle box. A Volca Nubass. Now I know this thing ain't all that, not by a long chalk but my god has it hit what I've been looking for. That 303 squeak. That's all's I've wanted to mess with through all this.

I've paired it with the Volca Beats and had a blast. Making shit that would have blown my mind in 88. So after all the superfluous buying and stressing, I've found my jam. Acid on a 303 wannabe.

I'll never share it publicly, but that's ok. I'm a star in my own room. Feels fucking good.

Maybe I should sell all that other stuff and get an actual 303, Hmmm...

P.S I actually had an interaction with Adonis on Reddit that pushed me to have one more try, and so get the Volca Nubass. Told him how We're Rockin Down the House had blown my mind after he'd posted a picture of his 303. Was pretty special having him say thanks for what I said. That track honestly made me realise something big would hit the UK when an Electro mad teenage me heard it inadvertently via Stu Allen in 86 (had been taping his Hip Hop hour show, left the tape recording and when I came to edit it I'd caught the first ten minutes of his nascent and I think as yet undefined next hour long show that followed immediately after Bus Dis. Think it was later named the House hour), hearing that House/Acid beat effected me in a big, big way.

If you’re after a 303 @amc you could take a look at the Behringer clone that you won’t have to sell a kidney to be able to buy.  They even do different colours including a yellow one with a smiley face

I bought a x0xb0x clone from off eBay about 10 years ago and feel the urge to get it out of the cupboard it’s been in for the past 7 years to make some acid house again.

Don't tempt me. Since my last post I allowed feature creep to set in again. Still having bags of fun with my Nubass and Beats but liked the look of the new Volca Sample 2, so bought it. I've only had it a week so haven't really delved into it, now have four Volca boxes, Beats, Drum, Nubass and Sample 2.

Getting some fabulous noises from them, even had them run into a Kaoss pad 3 and Kaossilator Pro. Too much Acid. Wonderful little trips are occurring.
