Kickstarters You've Backed

Recommended Posts

kickstarter-logo-light.png

When it comes to Kickstarter (or other crowdfunding platforms) I've always been a bit of a detractor. Handing over money upfront for the promise of a product didn't seem particularly smart to me. It's the same reason I have never bothered with Early Access on Steam. I'd rather just play the 'fully complete' product and whine about it later, instead of actively testing it until release. Obviously games can change drastically over time in terms of mechanics and what not, so I'd rather not spend my time on half finished software. Also imagine having backed Ouya. Or Star Citizen. *shudders*

However... I too have sinned, my friends. I recently backed Diabotical (succesfully funded: £168,314 pledged of £110,000 goal) which was mostly sparked by the resurgence of old-school arena shooters I've enjoyed as of late. Moreover Reflex (early access) has been a total blast so far and, to me, is basically proof that Quake 3 Arena is still very much alive in my heart. It appears that type of gameplay hasn't aged one bit and compared to shooters of a few years ago feels like a breath of fresh air.

Anyway because I backed Diabotical I've also been invited to participate in the Battlerite closed beta. Even though games like that aren't my cup of tea I've really been enjoying it so far! It's basically a top-down fighter on PC which cuts out the fat of typical MOBA's and gets straight into the PvP action, I guess. In any case that's some brilliant cross-promotion right there. I probably wouldn't have touched it otherwise but now it's looking like I'll definitely put in some hours when it's released. So for me, my first KS backing has been a success so far and got me wondering what some of you might have backed as well?

I'm pretty sure we have some Star Citizen backers on here... Do you "whoo" every time you see new progress videos on door animations? Heyooo.

Went balls deep into Bloodstained and have every faith in it.

Friday 13th: The Game - a bit worried about this one. Suppsedly out soon.

Ghost Theory - Some way off yet but it was cheap so will wait and see.

Luna - A charming looking puzzle point and clicker for mobiles.

Kickstarting a project is generally a lot fun as long as it's not Might No.9.

I would like to see the number of successful kickstarted products versus unsuccessful. By that I don't mean funded, I mean kickstarters that turned into successful businesses.

Still waiting for my rewards from the Carmageddon Kickstarter. Of course they ignore all emails, forum posts and Kickstarter comments from every other backer still waiting.

90s arcade racer, will this game ever come out? Still waiting.

TJ&E looks like it's going along pretty well so actually hopeful for this one.

Shenmue 3, the constant updates mean I'm confidant of this as well.

But so far I've spent a bit of money for actually nothing. I doubt I'm going to support many if any kick starters in future as they're quick to take the cash and then go radio silent. It takes seconds to post a quick update paragraph and yet very few kickstarters do after they've got the cash. Companies, especially those that have released their games need to be held more accountable. I understand the risks but if the game is out there and complete then surely they completed the project successfully and to budget.

Games-wise, I've backed Elite Dangerous (love it), The Escapists and Satellite Reign (yet to play either). I also backed Sociable Soccer, but that campaign got pulled when it was clear it wasn't panning out.

I've also backed a couple of books - the Sensible Software one by Read Only Memory, and a still unreleased book on independent game developers.

Shenmue III - more than happy in the knowledge that it's being made, and I'm not even worried about the final product. It could be a bunch of still shots while Ryo sits by a fireplace recalling his adventure for all I care.

Indivisible - Felt these guys went above and beyond for a kickstarter with an incredibly fun prototype available to download on PS4. Like the style and gameplay.

Is this the new "pulled the trigger"? It's going to get super annoying if it is.

I've backed more than I thought, but I usually don't go nuts so I'm not particularly bothered if it doesn't pan out.

90s Arcade Racer - I'm guessing this is dead.

Tiny Barbarian DX - Came out. Is a fun wee game.

Hyper Light Drifter - Came out. Is good.

Shadowrun: Hong Kong - Came out. Is good.

Chime Sharp - Came out. Is good.

Keep Skullgirls Growing - DLC characters came out. Campaign was well run.

Indivisible - Lab Zero have a pretty good track record with Skullgirls and the demo etc. so seems like a reasonable bet.

Broken Age - The game was so-so with some nice moments, but more than worth it for the frankly amazing Double Fine doc (by 2 player productions) that came with it.

Amplitude - Dying for an Xbox One version but what i played of the PS4 version was cracking.

Yooka Laylee - looks like it's coming along nicely!

I don't really get the whole "I don't play unfinished games" thing. I just really like being a part of the fundraising process for devs I love. It was really cool to know that Tim Schafer was making an adventure game, because I gave him £30. Even though there were development issues and whatever else it was cool to be a part of that process and know that my money meant something.

I've backed 3 things:

BRCK - Which delivered on time and was pretty cool although I don't use it much.

RHLSTP - Just because I listen to it a lot and felt he deserved my money

Kendall & Hyde Holdall - Because I liked the design. It's the only one which has missed it's delivery target but they're a company I've bought other stuff from so I'm not massively worried.

EDIT - None of those are game related - Sorry. Thought I was in OT.

The only ones that I'm really pleased with the outcome and have made a difference (of those have have been delivered in some form) are SuperHot and Tropes. Special mention to BrokenAge but mainly for the documentary series that came from it rather than the game.

I've backed 2 funded games:

Her Majesty's Spiffing - A 3D point and click adventure set in space. Backed only because it is made by a local dev in Belfast that I know. Looks nice enough. It's releasing on October 20th on Xbox and PC (at least, not sure about PS4, I know it was planned but they may have got funded a bit by Microsoft). 1 year late and features removed.

Prey for the Gods - Looks inspired by Shadow of the Colossus so couldn't NOT back it. Seems like it could be pretty good, but remains to be seen.

I've backed a few other unfunded game campaigns, namely Failsafe (a rope swinging FPS I think) and a wrestling CCG.

Most of my Kickstarter backings are music though. I backed 4 albums, which have all delivered on schedule and are great. But also backed RHLSTP and AIOTM (Richard Herring), and a traditional Irish orchestral arrangement of Zelda tunes. The last one isn't delivered yet, but they keep regular updates including rough cuts of the tunes and am really looking forward to it!

Yeah I know right? It was mainly for beta access which I did get. Was also meant to get a statue in the game showing my likeness but still not heard anything about that.

Mostly at the bottom get the game tier:

broken age - haven't played that much but the documentary was worth it

godus - meh, but it was more the idea I backed for

amplitude, because amplitude

satellite reign - because syndicate, I've played a bit and liked it

project eternity - played a couple of acts

torment

i think only torment is still outstanding. I've not necessarily played most of them very much,  but that's pretty consistent for PC games at around $20

Did Shaq Fu 2 actually get released? The indegogo page seemed both full of promise whilst reading like a sarcastic joke for the Internet generation who weren't born when the first one was around.
