Oh Danny Boy

What is spinning on your turntable?

Recommended Posts

After about seven years of being in China, I finally got myself a turntable over here. The old faithful is still stored away back in the UK, and I can't be arsed with buying anything more fancy than this AT while I've got daughters of three and one roaming around, destroying everything in sight. Cheaper is probably more sensible for now. I'll probably change the cart fairly soon, though.

I'll start with a 10rmb Taobao find...

Followed up with...

Yeah, I spent ages looking for it back home with no luck, then found it in among a bunch of classical stuff over here. Weird.

Today's pick is probably my favourite Return to Forever record these days.

Today it's Akina Nakamori's Fushigi, made as the iron grip of the Japanese pop industry loosened for a second and she self-produced a record before anyone could stop her. Naturally, she went and made an artsy goth album with Eurox, a Tokyo synth-pop band that had only released a couple of singles at that point. The usual, y'know.

She was essentially Japan's biggest mainstream pop star in 1986, so people were a bit confused by the ridiculously heavy reverb on all the vocals, spooky church-bell synths, violin solos and shit. Some even took it back to the record shops thinking there'd been some kind of terrible mistake.

I love it. Her best record by some margin.

Now playing - Some funky fresh Hip House courtesy of Tyree Cooper (via the Juno sale).

Queued up for the rest of the night, the rest of my purchases from the sale, ten 12"s in total.

I love the Juno sale, I listen to the previews and pick anything that sounds decent or interesting, sometimes they're not the best, mostly they're great. Well worth the gamble for 99p each!

Fantastic. The only Dead Can Dance I have on vinyl is Serpent's Egg, found years ago at a car boot in a haul of 4AD stuff that an old goth guy was selling.

I keep meaning to pick up a few Bob James records.

Today's pick is from Masayoshi Takanaka, previously of Sadistic Mika Band, occasional guitarist for YMO and creator of a bunch of jazz-rock-funk-fusion records with artwork depicting him living the dream. This is a bit of an odd one from 1981, being a double concept album based on an Italian children's book about goblins that want to drink the colours of the rainbow. Obviously.

It's perhaps not his best record, a bit overlong and mushy in places, but it has some enjoyably silly highlights with tape loops, chill vocodered vocals and his usual guitar heroics.

There's also a later Laserdisc release of a live show, with the band members all wearing massive goblin heads.

Weirdly, the same book was also adapted into a record by Primus a few years ago. Not heard that one, though.

Electro\techno\house bleepy goodness.

Thanks to @Mr Do 71 in the Plaid thread, I'm spinning a couple of the De:Tuned series 12"s courtesy of Bleep.

Got 03 and 06 so far. 07, 08 and 09 are on pre-order.

The others were out of stock, apart from 04 which was two D&B tracks which I didn't fancy. Once I've got the rest (most likely from Discogs) I'll probably end up with it just to finish the set.

Two bargain releases for tonight courtesy of the Piccadilly Records sale. Both RSD releases (2018 I think) that were being sold off cheap.

I already had the Rob Base album from first time round but my original isn't in the best condition, the FSOL release is something I haven't heard before and is excellent. Only compliant I have about it is that it didn't come with a download code and doesn't appear to be on Spotify.

Attempted arty shot of the FSOL album in motion.

Found this on a local flea market record stall yesterday, bit dirty but gently cleaning up alright, no proper scratches at least.

Making me feel really old to realise it's 22 years old though.
