The diving is also mental. Watching the pairs diving literally every dive I was blown away by the degree to which they were in sync, and the precision with which they entered the water. Meanwhile, the commentator would be like, HA ARE YOU JOKING ME??? THAT IS THE WORST DIVE I HAVE EVER SEEN! etc. Good job I am not a judge I guess or else everyone would get 10s all round.

Indeed! The North Korean (I think) one which was apparently a total fuck up looked pretty much flawless to me. Even the crowd seemed to instantly realise it was shite though, so I guess there was something obvious to those in the know!

I think all the dives look good initially.

But then when the Chinese absolutely nail a dive where they're both rotating at the same speed, hitting the water at the same time, from exactly the same distance away from the board with little splash, there is the sudden realisation that the others just look a bit sloppy.

@MalevolentPanda I'm interested to read your views about doping in swimming.  I know nothing about it really, but being a cycling a fan am obviously very aware of it's role it the peloton.  Sorry to be a suspicious Sid, but Peaty's performances do seem suspicious to me.

If you prefer to respond in the PED thread (if at all :D) I'll keep an eye out there too.

I assume 90% of basically all the athletes are juicing in some way.

Haha I was the same. They would pull off an unreal dive then the commentator was like "ah that's no good" and they scored 4s and 5s. I had my 10 sign up.

I never understand why the swimming has to go on for so long and have so many variants, it just seems utterly pointless.

In running its been determined the fastest way to run a distance is on your legs forward, all the events aren't quadrupled up by running backwards, sideways, hopping etc You are allowed to do that if you want but it's pointless as it won't be as quick, cyclists don't have different events for doing the distance doing a wheelie do they ?

Why do they drag the swimming out for so long - have the distances and relays and make it all freestyle, job done.

Because otherwise the australians and americans would be surrendering a load of medals?

I quite like the swimming events. I do wonder at the thought process of the person that ever came up with the butterfly style though.

I was bored to tears watching the 4x200m relay. There's not a 4x400m is there?

Apparently there's a 10k swim, thought 1500m was the furthest distance in the pool. 10k starts Sunday, finishes sometime around Tuesday week.

EDIT: turns out the 1500m is the furthest distance in the pool; 10k is in a lake or the sea or something similar. Upstream in the slalom canoeing facility would at least make it fun.

Yeah - the swimming is where the Olympics loses some of its credibility for me. As Phelps picks up his 196th gold medal (or whatever it is) you can't help but think if there was an event for running with your arms out like an aeroplane then Usain Bolt would have twice the tally he already has. The swimming is where the Olympics strays too close to the Guinness Book Of Records for me. There are good reasons there's no event for running the hundred metres backwards, but those reasons don't seem to apply to swimming.

If there was just one event over several distances I'd be all over it, but as it is I find it mildly farcical. It's like the ministry of silly walks in a pool.

Butterfly is beautiful and graceful.

It was also my event :quote:

Butterfly looks cool as fuck. No doubt each swimming discipline is technical but butterfly is the only one that looks like you'd need to nail each rep to avoid drowning / veering off to the left and exploding.

I think that's being grossly unfair on Phelps. The closest other swimming Olympian medal count is something like 9 golds. The fact he's been able to compete and win over these distances and style for the length of time he has is something of a freak/amazing sporting achievement.

If you start to get picky on events that are included you could wipe out a great number of events over all sorts of sports. The vast majority of the swimming events are over fairly quickly. Those make for far better viewing than many endurance running events. Britain will go mad for watching Mo Farah in the 10,000 metres, but that outside the utterly dire viewing spectacle that is the marathon it's the most boring event until the final couple of laps.

We shouldn't have all those different martial arts either, just have some people kick fuck out of each other for the overall win. Maybe get the fencers roped into it as well.

I don't mean to belittle Phelps - he's only doing what he's amazing at, and picking up what medals are on offer - it's the fact that they give them out like sweeties in the swimming compared to any other disciplines. If you ask most folk who the greatest Olympian is I'm guessing they won't automatically say Phelps, even though he has twice as many medals as the next best swimmer, and - what - nearly four times the amount of anyone from a different discipline. I don't know what the numbers are, but it seems like there are probably as many medals given out for going fast through water as there are for going fast through air, which would only really make sense to me if we were some kind of amphibian.

One good thing though - replying to this reminded me of International King Of Sports, which is still well worth a watch: (Edit: accidentally embedded the video with a time stamp and have no idea how to remove it. Sorry about that.)

Give them out like sweeties...

You've absolutlely no iota how specialist each of the strokes are. Anyone that can be world class across multiple is an absolute phenomenon.

Fuck off.

I think Phelps is just a phenomenon and one that many won't appreciate what he's achieved until long after he retires. To be at the top of your sport for eight years is highly unusual. To be top of a sport doing multiple disciples is even more unusual. To have the consistency he has over three Olympics is just insane.

Comparing different events is pointless. Sure there's a lot of swimming events, but there are also a lot of running events, cycle events, throw some object the furthest events, kick the shit out of someone events, shot something events and lift something events.

To me the pointless Olympic events are the ones that aren't the pinnacle of their sports. Things like football, golf, tennis have no place in it in my opinion. That and all that equestrian shit, but mainly as I just hate all that horsey bollocks.

He's been caught on camera smoking weed but can't see that being too much of a PED. Maybe help up his munchies so he can eat his 12,000 calorie training diet.

Yep. Outstanding. As was Cancellara in the men's. I was all choked up. Legend.

I'm pretty sure Kyrienka thought he was supposed to lead Froome out.

Nope. I watched a 1500m swimming race at the 2012 Olympics live. It was the only event where I got bored. It's so slow you start to forget what the hell is happening, and for the 10,000 metres at least they're nice enough to put other events on in the stadium at the same time.

meanwhile Paddling!

Diving is defi the best thing ever I have now decided, doing our own little commentary now and I just called an over rotation on the Russians dive - this on the same day I got all the weeds out of the drive too!
