Just announced at Comic Con. The film will be released between the two Infinity War movies in 2019.

Brie Larson, fresh off critical success 'Room', for which she won any Oscar (and most other awards going) went on to work on Skull Island (released in March 2017) as well Free Fire. The movie, it has just been revealed, will take place in the 1990s, before all the current Marvel CU movies. Returning will be Samuel L. Marvel Studios officially confirmed at their San Diego Comic-Con panel that Brie Larson (Room, Short Term 12, Kong: Skull Island) will star as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, in their upcoming feature film!

In the regular Marvel Comics continuity, Carol Danvers made her first appearance in 1968’s “Marvel Super-Heroes” #13. A Security Chief in the US air force, Danvers would later be transformed  into the superhero Ms. Marvel following an explosion involving Kree technology. More recently, Danvers took on the identity of Captain Marvel after being “promoted” to the moniker of the former Kree superhero.

Little is known regarding Marvel’s specific plans for Captain Marvel outside of the fact that the film will feature the Danvers version of the character. It was confirmed last year that a Captain Marvel cameo was, at one point, part of the script for Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explained that the decision was ultimately made not to rush her appearance. It was also recently reported that Captain Marvel will make her debut in Joe and Anthony Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War, which is set to begin production in November. The first part of Infinity War is scheduled to hit the big screen May 4, 2018 with the second half following on May 3, 2019. Between those two films will be Captain Marvel, which arrives March 8, 2019.

Man, you guys and your low effort, low content OPs. Like, you're so obsessed with being first and then...you do nothing except paste in a frickin' press release. No effort, no artistry, no flair. Tres disappointing.

Anyway, at least once this flick is out of the way we can finally get around to getting Kamala, aka the only Marvel worth a damn.

So we're supposed to make up our own commentary in the first post? I thought that was what comments after the first post were for?  There's not exactly a wealth of information out on this movie yet.

This will be set in the 90s with Nick Fury appearing pre eye patch. Villain will be the Skrulls, which must mean they've done a deal with Fox as they were held under the F4 rights IIRC.

Is this confirmed or just speculation ? Why wouldn't they have pulled her into the Avengers if she was about and known off pre Iron Man? Does she fuck off into Space in the comics?

Just shown concept art at their SDCC panel revealing it.

Captain Marvel does have a fair bit of cosmic stuff so it's not inconceivable they would have her being off planet. They are also changing some of the origin which might mean she may not have been Captain Marvel during that time in the film. Unless it's all set in the 90s of course.

Sorry, most of the time I'm posting having not been up long, or the press release is the only real information available. Normally I do try and stick at least a few lines of my own in there. I think in this case, practically nothing was known at the time anyway, and the announcement itself was a bit of a surprise (the fact we've had to wait a year for anything else on the movie is pretty telling as to how little was known/how surprising the announcement was).

I've updated the original post now to add some new details as well. The character also has a listed credit in

Jude Law will play Mar-vell, Captain Marvel's mentor and, in the comics at least, the original Captain Marvel, because comics are silly.

Ben Mendelsohn is supposedly signed on as the villain (a Skrull you'd guess).

This movie could be fucking weird.

Here's a shot of Larson as Captain Marvel in her scenes from 'another marvel film that isn't Captain Marvel'

Spoiler

Avengers 4 - speculation that the suit is green in places because the effects will be added to it later (?)

This will bomb right? She's not exactly the most popular character on the Marvel roster.

Neither were the Guardians. This could likewise turn out to be a weird, fun movie that is unexpectedly popular.

Am I right in thinking that this is the first Marvel film with a female lead? If so I reckon this will do very well. There's a reason why Black Panther has more pre-order ticket sales than any other MCU film.

The original Kree warrior/Mar-Vell version of Captain Marvel wore a green Kree battle suit to start with until he made his own..

People have been saying this since Iron Man.

No.

I’d never heard of any of them except Captain America and Spider-Man (plus the X Men) before the movies started, but I still go and see all of them because Marvel superhero film.

fuckall, she's rubbish in the comics. The most interesting thing about her was getting bammed into a coma by mistake by Rogue and that was already done as good as it can be in the 90s cartoon.

That said, at least it's not a Storm movie starring Halé Berry

She's the only marginally-notable female character not owned by someone else.

It feels like there's a real demand for more diverse leads in these kinds of film. Look at how popular Rey was in the last two Star Wars films (tantruming neckbeards notwithstanding), how popular Wonder Woman was, and how much attention Black Panther has got. Obviously, it'll all come down the execution, but I reckon this has got a really good chance of succeeding. It's coming out the same year as Wonder Woman 2, but if anything, I think that'll help its chances.

They need to go the extra mile to get all the teasers, trailers, etc. looking good.

Get a big space battle with her flying around in the middle punching holes in ships in there.
