I keep hearing how great The Expanse is but I've watched the first episode three times now and still not managed to get to the second one. How long do I need to stick with it before it clicks? If it's half a season then I'm out.

There's quite a bit of setup with a fair few characters and locations in the first couple of episodes so it can be less than cohesive.. but the space station setting of the initial couple of episodes is definitely NOT indicative of rest of the series, as you leave that and most of the characters there behind..

Episode 4 is generally the one that gets people hooked..

Plus you know they'll string out the Burn mystery for the entire season and eventually the reveal of what happened will either be shit, related directly to Burnham or, probably, both.

I'm really afraid this is going to happen. I hope they've learned their lesson a bit, but... KURTZMAN.

They’ll reveal it was originally called the Burnham Event and the name has just mutated down the years, or something equally awful.

Didn't he say both his grandfather and his dad were Starfleet, but apparently neither of them decided to swear the creepy twat in. That should be raining warning bells to Saviour of the Federation Burnham.

I would if anyone had bothered picking it up outside the us.

I'm not waiting much longer before I torrent the series. One of the big advantages of the streaming revolution is that I've barely had to do this in the past few years.

Yeah it’s pretty daft of them. I’d have thought Netflix would have got straight on it.

The fact that Picard went to Amazon leaves things wide open as to where Lower Decks eventually goes, but then you would expect an animated series to go for a lot less than a big budget movie like TV show like Picard/Disco (so easy pickings).

Perhaps neither service is interested in a "comedy animated" Trek series and would rather spend their money on more lavish offerings?

Either way, stupid decision leaving it this long to not sort out an international broadcaster in the age of Streaming. Funny, it was the Mando a year ago in the same position (although at least we had a date/timescale for wider release).

It's much better star trek than this or Pickard.

That's not to say it's any good though. My arsehole is better star trek than this or Picard.

Did the last bunch of Short Treks get picked up anywhere yet? I've still not hate watched them either and I must hate watch it all.

they had to didn't they

Spoiler

45 minutes of Star Trek, damaged ship trapped by strange new phenomenon, crew members go on mission, meet bad guy, defeat bad guy while keeeping to star fleet moral code.

ship gets back to working order just in time then.....

they screw the episode. in a show like 24 that twist at the end would throw you completely, blowing your mind, making you question every nuance of everything you have just been watching. But what do we get, not an interesting new alien, not a threat from the ancient past returning, give me a borg, a voth, a vorta, a sheliak, even a fucking pakled, but no we just get the dissapointing face of Michael gurning Burnham with a new haircut.

45 minutes of burnham free trek, an actual strange new world and they had to bring back poochie at the end.

They need to watch the opening of the motion picture again and again until it's drilled into their minds that these ships are huge majestic things.

Not matchbox cars. They deserve the awe that Kirk let slip when watching the Enterprise in the space dock. Not this shit.

Absolutely agree, I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed this episode (perhaps the vodka I've been drinking helped). Until

Spoiler

that fucking end scene. Bloody Burnham, tearing up AGAIN (fuuuuuck ooofffffffff). This episode showed me that a Burnham free Discovery might be a lot better...

I liked it. At least we got some quality Tilly this time

Tilly and Saru are great together. I'd say we keep them and Jet, plus Giorgio for occasional comic relief / kicking people in the face, and get rid of everyone else.

Tilly was tolerable to start with but she's been getting fatter and zanier with every episode. She's basically just comic relief at this point, no attempt to make her an actual character. In Season 3 she'll probably get her own laughter track.

When I posted this 18 months ago I could not have predicted the true horror of S3 Tilly, who is practically spherical and made almost entirely of chins.
