Sonic Mania

Indeed I think the whole instant death thing actually seems worse in this game than it was in previous classic sonic games.

There are some differences in collision detection. Play the Sonic 2 version of Chemical Plant's rising chemical/vertical column section, and then play Mania's version, and Mania seems less forgiving of moments when you clip the corners of moving blocks.

Agreed about the blue spheres stages. I’m glad they’re not the true bonus stages (the new ones in Mania are absolutely ace fun) but would have preferred they just begone.

I'm getting back into this and doing a bitty task while I work from hom that gives me a few minutes downtime while it runs. I want to grind out the bonus stages while I do this (the Sonic 3 ones accessed from the stars over the checkpoints) - what's the most efficient way? Can I quit back to the main menu after I get one and is it cumulative across save files?

Yes it's cumulative - once they are done they are done. I think I replayed Green Hill 1&2 to finish the last one or two as I knew were a few of the large rings were in the world. I always finished the stages +boss so unsure when it saves progress.

If I remember correctly Oil Ocean zone 1 or 2 has a giant ring within about 10 or 15 seconds of starting - you have to jump along the oil and it’s hidden under a platform. I rinsed it that way, I’m afraid to say, they’re jut too well hidden and difficult for me to do the normal way!

It's definitely a nostalgia kick, but the levels are fun, animation top notch, and soundtrack is great. It really plays exactly as if this is 1996 and Sonic's latest game, which is good and bad, I guess. For me, it's still a home run. Just attempt Sonic 4 (lol) or Sonic Forces for more than 10 minutes to see where "modern Sonic" is rn.
