That's so cool! I've been thinking about getting a 3D printer for my daughter. I'm much more into the human side of it and she's pretty good with computers and programming so I thought it would be beneficial.

What model of printer did you get?

Mine is this one -

http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__84282__Malyan_M180_Dual_Head_3D_Printer_UK_Plug_UK_Warehouse_.html

It's went up in price a bit with the pound being crap. I got it because it was pretty much plug and play, there are so many you can get cheap now, but most of them require a lot of assembly and setting up. This one just worked out of the box. It also has dual extruders, so you can print different colours / materials at the same time. I'm just starting to experiment with that, this was the test print -

I also got some flexible filament, it's kind of rubbery but really cool. Managed to fix a toilet seat by designing and printing my own well nut -

I'd really recommend getting one, there's so much you can do with them it's unreal! I haven't got to making any more props yet, but have a load in my to-do pile! Just found today someone has made a full 'vera' gun prop from Firefly for printing, so might give that a bash!

Not sure there's another thread about this sort of thing, but glad I found this. I ordered myself the Original Prusa i3 mk2 at the end of November and today got my dispatch note. It arrives Tuesday! :D

Can't tell you how excited I am to start making stuff.

In the wait time, I've made myself a small maker area/space, been buying tools I'll need, and watching soooo many vids on YouTube by channels like Tested, 3DPrintingNerd, Punished Props, etc.

The wait has been excruciating, and I wish it arrived tomorrow so I had the weekend to build it; but still, it's real and it's making its way from Prague to me :D

Will be sure to post up the things I create (I'm an artist in the games industry so I have plenty of experience to create my own stuff rather than purely files from Thingiverse or similar.

Sorry, just saw these replies, thought this thread had died! Those characters look awesome! How are you finding the Prusa? Looks like a great piece of kit and all the reviews are excellent.

Ive still been printing loads and did a few upgrades to my machine. Most prints though are RC related, but I've got a codsworth from fallout 4 waiting for sanding and painting, just need some time!

@iwan_canobi I've not had experience with other printers but the quality I'm getting has blown me away to be honest. I have friends who print and they've been equally impressed given the short time I've had it.

Made some progress with the painting; just need to clean bits up, varnish, then prepare the base :)

Cheers guys.

That's an awesome paint job! How did you achieve that look? Lots of layering?

Just kept switching the colours in my airbrush, then going over with several washes and dry brushing to grime it up. I also scratched the surface a bit in places to get some highlights from the plastic breaking up a bit.

Sadly I made the mistake of varnishing it afterwards and it's gone really dark.

Ah well, you live and learn.

Amongst other things I also got round to printing the baby Groot pot that's done the rounds recently, but haven't painted it yet.

I've been cleaning up my Youtube channel in order to be able to post timelapses of prints and painting, more often. Currently there's nothing great on there, but I hope to improve it. I also designed and printed a camera mount tonight which needs a few tweaks but will allow me to fix the camera to the printers bed/carriage so the timelapses will look a lot better in future. Any likes/subs/shares appreciated, if only so I can eventually get a custom URL that matches my channel name - https://www.youtube.com/user/FozZph3uS

Guess this is a decent place to post this?

I need to make an alien (as in the film alien) head type mask for a short film test. So that kind of long cylindrical shape. Does anyone have any good advice for a decent base? I was thinking of getting one of those cheap animal (horse?) masks on ebay, gluing big blocks of balsa around it and then carving it into the basic shape. There's probably a far better and easier way tho! Any ideas?

I just bought a 3D printer, was wondering if there was a thread - guess this is it! Some amazing prints there, I won’t be attempting anything on that scale but looking for some cool small things to have a play with :)

Bit of a delay, what printer did you get? Having fun so far? :D

It’s a Monoprice Select Mini V1, a real beginner printer but suits me just fine! Not really done a great deal with it yet, I have printed a few parts but nothing extravagant. Bought a glass bed for it as the heated bed is a bit warped, I could level it but couldn’t get good adhesion across the bed. Haven’t quite got the settings dialled in just right for the glass bed just yet but it’s good fun!

My son has used it more than me which is nice as that’s half the reason I got it - felt for him the other day as he’d started a print which was taking hours, longer than he’d anticipated and as he fretted over it he nudged the bed… guess that’s a rite of passage all must endure at some point!!

Ah yeah, it can be a bit of a nightmare getting things dialled in, I tried a glass bed before and just couldn't get on with it at all. Loads of people rave about them though!

I hadn't used mine for ages and went to print something the other week and it just failed time after time to stick to the bed, spent ages messing around, trying different things with no success. Eventually had to change the filament and then it worked fine! Think the filament sitting out had meant it had picked up some moisture and it just wouldn't work!

But still, when you get things working well it's amazing what they can churn out. I'm working on my latest Serenity Firefly build just now. Getting close to finished, just final painting and weathering to do!

Any ideas?

I've owned a Anycubic 6x for a few months. I've had nothing but problems printing with it though.

I managed to get it printing inititally, but lately every thing i try fails - either gets stuck to the resin tray or the build plate.

I replaced the resin tray due to it maybe being damaged but still having issues - currently using plant based anycubic resin. It's a little out of date but i had no issues printing with it before. I've soacked the build plate in white spirit for the past week to see if it helps but haven't got round to trying it yet.

Just having another look and i spotted this -

20221106_161333.thumb.jpg.14c25cb2bfaee0de075720eac8b6861a.jpg

the mark on the top right - is the screen damaged?

Perhaps this could be causing issues? I really don't know how that happened.

I mean it's just far enough out the way to not really cause issues with prints but if its the cause it's not printing at all.

Not sure on that printer but it looks like the screen has damage, has any resin leaked onto it and could have cured on? Don’t think that would cause any issues apart from at that bit of the plate though.

If the resin has expired that could change the curing behaviour, have you tried new stuff?

If it’s sticking to the FEP (the thin material on the bottom of the tray) then you might want to check your supports and model orientation to try and reduce the suction force when lifting. There’s also settings in the slicer to change lift speed I think. The FEP might need tightened? There’s so many variables with resin printing and I’m not an expert really, I can never get mine printing particularly reliably either.

My first attempt at a 3D printed project arrived from the printers this morning.

Was a certain amount of luck they actually fit properly as they snap into place then screw in - cost over £400 to print, so could of been costly!

Only had time to do 1 test print which turned out to small so guessed the percentage increase needed.

Custom heel clips for Acronym Nike Blazers.

Design is based on elements from Death Stranding and these will be winging themselves over to Tokyo to be presented to the big man Kojima himself next week.

A small projector will be fitted to the cylinder shape part, that projects the Kojima Studio logo.

I'd have preferred to have got them painted and weathered to look like battered metal, but alas not enough time.

That’s awesome! Looks amazing with the projectors!

My printers have been going non stop the last week or so, embarking on my next project of a full sized R2D2! Been researching and planning for years but decided just to go for it and get started. Will likely take years to finish but it feels good to be making a start. The dome will be printed and the body will be CNC plywood frame with styrene skins.
