I think it's better than the Batman games. It tells a better story, traversal is way more fun and it has a better, more freeform combat system with launchers, juggles and all.The PS5 sequel is gonna be glorious.

Think that comes down to personal preference though. The traversal and combat in the Batman games is superb, and the setting and tone are a lot more appealing to me that the quipping annoying Peter Parker and Spiderman. I'll stick with it though for a while longer

The Harry Osborne challenges are up there for my favourite gamey gamishness of the entire generation.

I posted about this way back in the thread, but the web swinging physics cheats big time. And for that reason I'd still pick the 2004 game for the desert island over this one.

There is armour that PS5 game will offer three styles of web-swing mechanics, to include something similar to the 2004 game as one of the options.

I'm around 50% of the way through this now and I think it's a brilliant game.  I'm surprised just how good the story is - I expected the Peter Parker sections to be a bit dull, but I don't really ever find myself wanting to get back into the Spidey suits during those sections.  The balance between the web slinging and the story of Peter, MJ etc is bang on.

I even find myself enjoying the collectables which normally I just skip past.  Yes, there are lots of them but traversing the city to find them all is pretty addictive.  I'm finding enough variety in the various side missions, Osborne challenges, hideouts etc etc.

Great stuff.

I played about 4 hours and felt like I probably seen all it had to offer.

The city felt exactly the same as Prototype - just a series of blocks to run up and down.

Just like .... New York maybe... mind blowing.

And just like before, that's a bit of a reach and nobody cares.

That's the thing, the traversal in itself is so much fun. In most other games it becomes a tedious chore having to run up to each icon on the map just to be able to fill up your digital shopping list enough to unlock pretty looking armour and/or an achievement. In Spider-Man it's a welcome excuse to keep swinging and prolong the fun and exhilaration inherent to simply going somewhere in this game. It's one of the few games I ever Platinumed, usually I don't bother, but with Spider-Man I wanted to keep playing.

Can't wait for the sequel! And yes, @gooner4life, the webswinging was indeed still a bit better in Spider-Man 2. It was more involved and freeform, and through that it felt even more exhilarating and satisfying. I agree that it's bullshit to say that the webswinging in this game is therefore bad, though - it's excellent and great fun. but it could be even more excellent and fun if they took the Spider-Man 2 system and polished it up and offered it as an optional advanced control system* in the sequel. Win-win.

*Edit: the specific swinging system in Spider-Man 2 that everyone keeps raving about, was in fact also an optional advanced control setting in that game, fact fans!

Yeah I'm going to try and Platinum this.  Not done it before - I'm mainly on Xbox and haven't got close to doing so in any of the other PS4 games I've played.

I haven't used fast travel once yet!!

People cared enough to put together several long, but well researched, Youtube videos on it, like.

Well that's me all done, and with the Platinum trophy to boot :) What a bloody fabulous video game.

I think Insomniac really nailed the feel of the characters and game world, and it told the story in a largely unsurprising but very very satisfying way, to the point that I would argue it's possibly the best execution of Spider-Man in any format. For me it was slick and polished, and the engine worked really well. The combat was fast and fluid, but also challenging enough to make you focus while still making you feel like a badass superhero. I thought the story, animation and voice acting was all really good and I liked the Peter Parker bits just as much as Spider-Man bits, and they captured MJ really well too.

I can see why people might want an 'advanced' swinging mode - it would be interesting and I certainly would trust Insomniac to make it - but I didn't feel it was something I personally needed. I just loved being able to cruise around NYC being one of my childhood heroes. Even all the collectables, challenges, puzzles, etc... I found engaging and not a chore to complete (objectively the Act 3 crimes become a little bit of a grind but I still enjoyed the moment to moment gameplay of them). Act 3 on the whole was a visual treat though (with some echoes of the Outsider from Dishonored) and I really enjoyed the boss fights, and unlike quite a few games this one finishes really strongly.

All in all, between this and Jedi: Fallen Order, so far 2020 has been an absolute treat of being able to be absorbed into material/worlds/characters I already enjoyed. I'm going to go off to seek out something new to explore next but will be back to do the DLC when that Spidey itch needs a good scratch. Just like Fallen Order, a sequel is a day one purchase for me. Thanks again to everyone who helped me pick this, it was exactly what I was craving. One of my games of the generation.

Spectacular.

You've basically listed all the reasons why I love this so much, but I'm not at the end yet.  Still plenty of hours left to sink into this - I really am loving it.  Might be my favourite PS4 game yet, with God of War, Uncharted: Nathan Drake Collection and Uncharted 4 still gathering dust....

Personally, Spider-Man is pitched absolutely perfectly for me.  It's just such good fun.

I really liked it. Had to just batter through the story because I wanted to clock it within the 7 day PS Now free trial, but still managed to find all backpacks and the provisional attractions photo spots at least. Had I had the game for keeps I could have seen me getting the platinum.

Despite being on a mission to complete the story within the week, I still found time to just swing about the city and batter random goons. My last evening with the game was spent doing just that for hours on end in the post game, since I’d finished the story the night before. Was utter bliss.

It’s also one of the very few non-Nintendo big budget triple-A games I’ve played this generation, so I wasn’t used to that particular brand of PS4 first party polish or the Ubisoft-style open world formula fatigue that others maybe resented.

I'm also playing this through Playstation Now with the 7 day trial but I think I'm going to pace this through. So far I've been doing what I call the "Assassins Creed" method of collecting, by collecting what's currently available before doing the next story missions. I find it's a bit more bite-sized instead of doing side missions right at the end all in one go. Even the collectibles I find enjoyable because there's nothing too repetetive. So far I've collected all of Peter's bags and currently visiting all the NY landmarks. I love how they included Marvel fictional buildings amongst the lot, "Oh look! It's the Alias Investigations building!". I'm also tackling the Kingpin buildings at the same time. They seem a bit tough but luckily there doesn't seem too many of them either.

Coming to the end of the main game now - 93% through it according to my save file.

So I've almost finished my quest for platinum, but I made a rookie error - I used too many challenge tokens on the gadgets meaning I'll have to replay some challenges to try and improve my score so I can purchase all the suits. Thing is, I'm crap at them!!

I've absolutely adored playing this game, very tempted by the DLC, even if it's more of the same because I've had so much fun and I'm not ready to leave it yet!!

Back on this last night after getting my Days Gone marathon.

I'd already earned the platinum on this, bought the DLC in a sale but hadn't started it.

Did the first of the three additional stories last night

Black Cat

.

More of the same and it's brilliant for it. The combat is slick, traversal is sublime and the script and VO reminds me of when I used to watch the cartoon as a boy.

Going to do the second story tonight

Hammerhead

.

Not 100% sure on this but I think if you are going for the platinum you need all the gadgets anyway so it's not wasted. Plus having higher end gadgets make the combat challenges a bit easier.

Just to prepare you... to upgrade/buy everything I needed to get level 3 in all challenges but two (and those had to be level 2). Basically there are 6 total excess challenge points available so you may need to get your practice in ;) If you want any tips let me know and I'll try and help.

Whew! Just finished the main game and, I gotta say, it was brilliant. Not only did Insomnic get the feeling of being Spider-Man just right but they put a pretty fun and engrossing story in there too, with lots of well drawn characters and drama, packed with loads of supervillains to boot.

Spoiler

Battling the likes of Rhino, Vulture and Dr Octopus was a real highlight, in a game of many. I particularly loved battling Electro while webslinging; challenging, fun and it fulfilled many a childhood fantasy.

The on foot and stealth sections were quite dull and perfunctory, it has to be said - particularly when held against the main game, which is so richly detailed and lovingly realised - and while I appreciate they are meant to be pallet cleansers, like the mini games, their trial and error nature did grate, especially coming off the back of TLoU 2. I in no way expect Insomniac to develop a fully featured stealth game on top of what they’ve already achieved, but perhaps just eliminate these bits in the future?

Can’t wait to see where the story goes in the next game!
