Mary Poppins Returns

Sorry I just found it all really dull. 

Wishaw still can act anything other than himself, I was expecting Bond to turn up and ask for a gun for most of the film.

The kids were all annoying brats. 

The bad guy was a scary as cold rice pudding.

The songs all nodded at the much better originals. I couldn't name or sing one form the remake , yet left the cinema humming "let's go fly a kite"

The lamplighter set piece looked like it was on the stage of the royal variety performance, I was expecting Bond to turn up and introduce the Queen. 

The turning time back section seemed to miss the point that big Ben has stairs inside. 

 

And any banks that accepts a share certificate in that condition deserves to collapse. 

 

The original is beautiful and magical, this is cynical, dull and merely a box ticking exercise. Avoid.

It wasn't so much that that bothered me, more the fact that all the chirpy cockney chaps were risking their lives climbing up the side of the tower, then Poppins just flies straight up like a total twat!

Yeah, you guys are totally right, what a Mary Poppins film really needs is a big dose of realism and common sense.

Took the kids to see this today. Haven't watched the original for a very long time, but don't recall Julie Andrews playing the role so ... disparagingly. She's constantly looking the kids up and down in this and there's no warmth behind the icy exterior. Maybe the original was the same and my memory is failing me.

She plays it more like the original character from the books, as opposed to trying to recreate the Julie Andrews version.

 

I can see this not sitting well with some, as for a lot of people, Julie Andrews is Mary Poppins and that’s that, but I appreciate that Emily Blunt disregarded that and found her own version (or at least went back to the source material for her inspiration).

 

I certainly wouldn’t say she was mean though. Curt and vain, certainly, but not mean.

Just saw this (opening weekend in Japan) and thought it was great. Thought Jack was awful, the plot/baddie a bit undervalued, the songs not as good as the original; but Emily blunt and the original Banks kids were amazing, the set pieces were smashing, and there were some perfect moments of nostalgia and emotion.

 

My six-year-old daughter found it a bit boring though, and was disappointed that it didn't include supercalifragilistic - as was I, actually; I think there was room for an actual reprise or two.

Blunt has said countless times she played MP differently to Andrews because she didn't just want to copy her and like others have mentioned she's tried to bring out the MP from the books. Travers famously hated the original MP because Disney changed everything about the character and the books. Blunt copying Andrews and getting it wrong would be way worse than putting her own spin on the character and we all know if she had tried to copy, everyone in here would just be moaning that she's a doing a second rate Julie Andrews impression.

I'd never seen the original before, so watched that last night and this this morning. Enjoyed them both, but the original probably had better set-pieces and the songs were definitely better.

 

Found myself strangely emotionally affected by Angela Lansbury for some reason.

Have to agree. For me this is one of those films where i thought after watching it 'i'll never get that time back'. Not many films have done that.

Yes, it probably overdid the callbacks to the original. But you know what? It doesn’t matter.

I think this is a stone cold classic.  Blunt totally sells it in exactly the way you describe.
