There's been some casting news, some confirming rumours.

Cate Blanchett is the movie's main villain Hela, the Asgardian goddess of death who has been the scourge of Thor in the pages of Marvel Comics dating back to 1964.

 

Tessa Thompson is Marvel's newest female superhero Valkyrie, a mighty warrior chosen by Thor's father Odin to bring lost souls to the promised land Valhalla.

 

Jeff Goldblum will be turning up as Marvel's Grandmaster, an immortal Elder of the universe who will always pursue amusement at any cost.

 

Karl Urban turns to the dark side and grabs hold of a mighty double-bladed axe to play the Asgardian executioner known throughout the galaxy as Skurge.

 

 

Mark Ruffalo is also back as Hulk, as well as Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins and Idris Elba. Natalie Portman will not feature as it's mainly off Earth.

So this, presumably final, advert for Infinity War adventure for old Goldilocks is due out November 2017. After two films generally seen as the weaker entries in the Marvel Universe, can director Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows, Eagle vs Shark) pull off a barnstormer of an ending for everyone's favourite bunch of space vikings? Well if he doesn't, it sure as hell won't be because of an issue with the cast because the cast is fantastic.

 

Thor (Ghostbusters' Chris Hemsworth), Loki (future Ian Fleming's James Bond, 007 Tom Hiddleston), Heimdall (Family Affairs' Idris Elba), and Odin (Anthony Hopkins, Freejack) return but this time are joined by...

 

* Mark Ruffalo (Mirror, Mirror III: The Voyeur) as Dr Bruce Banner, a slightly emo fellow with anger management issues

* Cate Blanchett (Hot Fuzz) as Hela, Norse Goddess of Death, Ruler of Hel, generally not someone you want to annoy much. Or at all.

* Tessa Thompson (Veronica Mars) as Valkyrie, an Asgardian warrior lady who punches things, rides a winged horse, punches more things

* Karl Urban (Doom) as Skurge the Executioner, ostensibly a bad guy, and not the sharpest tool in the shed. Proud owner of the single most badass moment in any comic ever. I will cut you if you disagree!

* Jeff Goldblum (Death Wish) as The Grandmaster, a very old, very powerful cosmic entity who...really likes playing games. He's probably posting on MCU Rllmuk about Overwatch as we speak

 

No word yet if Lady Sif or the Warriors Three will be returning but one expects so. Alas, it would appear Jane Foster (Natalie Portman, Star Wars - Episode II: Attack of the Clones) died on the way back to her home planet.

With Hela & Skurge cast there's no way they could avoid doing the Gjallerbru showdown. I really hope Skurge gets a lot of screen time in this before that (if it happens), Karl Urban is a fantastic choice for the role & he always puts his all into his characters. 

 

He he should bring some Lawgivers with him!

Ah right, well it's not going to matter if he doesn't want to do more cause I'm positive he has an Infinity gem in his armour. They can just kill him off.

 

I mean someone has to die, we're 11 films in now and only 3 good guys have died. Where is the peril?

Yeah, I figure that's where we're going to find ourselves by the end of Ragnarok. Which also suggests that The Vision could be in trouble going forward as well.

There's been 13 MCU movies so far. How many heroes kick the bucket across 13 average comic stories of an average comparable length to a movie story? Lets not even get into how they always seem to be alive again after a while in the comics.

I just feel like unless something happens to at least one of the main guys, where is the peril? If Thanos isn't able to kill any of the main heroes, then where is the threat? What makes him any different to the Chitari cannon fodder.

Why do so many people seem to believe that a narrative arc has to have a character die in it to be meaningful? A character can die if it serves the story, but a character dying doesn't necessarily make a great story more believable or better.

Where is it writ he has to get all of the gems? (Well, the comics I suppose, but then many things have been writ there that haven't come to pass on screen...) There are two gauntlets...
