Neo Geo Appreciation Thread

Genuine question for owners of a Neo Geo “back in the day” (as in when they were first released).

Where did you get the games from? Was it mail order only or was there specialist shops you had to travel to?

I don’t remember a single game shop - chain or independent- that carried them. I think I only ever saw one in the arcades as one of those multi-game cabs.  The Neo Geo seemed quite aspirational at the time, but I don’t remember actually seeing one in the flesh to aspire over! They were almost like this rumour of a console that nobody owned.

I was lucky. Back in the early 90s when I got my first, I had Telegames and a couple more importers locally, so games were always available.

I remember my school mates telling me I was talking shit when I said I had one. Until I took a cart in to show them! Then I became the envy of everyone. Even more than the kid that brought a PC Engine GT in on toy day!

Chip Shop in Liverpool, who were pretty big importers. Bought one used for £150 I think. Maybe mid nineties.

They stocked used games too (obvs) and I eventually bought Samuari Shodown and Art of Fighting. Don't think I could afford to buy a game when I bought the console!

I played on an AES a fair bit in the early '90s as well the arcade machines that were prevalent in many stacked arcades we had in Brighton. Magician Lord, Nam 75 and Baseball Stars were what we played the most. My mate would trade games with a Japanese contact he had, the same dude who sold him numerous models of disc-copying devices for the SNES and Mega Drive. I don't think he ever had more than a couple of games at a time.

I've never seen a consolised MVS in the flesh. I also have no doubt that a 100% cycle accurate Neo Geo FPGA core will be a reality within a couple of years - rendering OG hardware with its rapidly chip-rotting guts obsolete.

Mail order was rife - every issue of Mean Machines* had plenty of ads for Neo Geo consoles and hardware, certainly for the titles of the early 90s.

The recent Angry Video Game Nerd video on game magazines reminded me of this advert (I'm sure I saw it in Penthouse  back in the early 90s... cough ahem)

At least Patrick Bateman was using a Neo Geo controller instead of a chainsaw....

(And the Neo Geo would definitely suit a chapter in American Psycho with Patrick Bateman explaining as to why it was superior to every other gaming system).

Which games does this affect? I don’t recall reading anything about this.

On another note I was in a game shop in Singapore last week and they had shelves of home carts, including 2 Mark of the Wolves and a SSV Special. All games were mint. Also 5 or more home systems and even MVS carts, it was great to see and reminded me of when CEX Rathbone Place was the games shop to go to or Game Focus.

Nostalgia is a expensive thing if you want to collect for the AES now.

I always think the memories of actually owning one when it was released are far better :)

It's not _that_ expensive, you can pick up an actual AES console for around the price of the Mega SG

If you avoid the ridiculously expensive games, you can make a nice colection if you are savvy and dont use the buy-it-now on ebay etc

****EVERYTHING IS AUTHENTIC!!!!**** Bang Busters and Crossed Swords II are exceptions because they were not released so they are is a custom carts.

I mean, they're MVS carts, in softboxes, nothing "authentic" about them. Still, I'm trying to figure out why Chun Li is on the spine:

A shop near me has an AES for sale but it has a “work ram” error.

Is it reasonably easy to fix or anyone know where it could be sent for repair?

how much are they selling for?

I've got a few nice neo geo themes (Ps4), I'm sure all the ones I have, have came free with the Snk released games, but, it may of been from the hamster ports...I can't remember now!

Here's Mai! She really is a fun character to play with. Both kof97 and 98, she is a ton of fun.

Sorry about poor quality image, my cam is rubbish and even worse in this light.

I think I prefer 97 to any other kof game I've played this far in.

I'm going to fire this up soon, do some single play, brush up on moves.

Heads up too. The SNK stuff on PSN is on sale again.....

Could we get some online stuff going?

Garou MOTW, The last blade 2 and KOF97 have net play.
