It is odd given that Sony are a media company... however what is the take-up on UHD Blu-Ray? I'm guessing everything is going streaming anyway? Can't remember last time a lot of people I know actually bought a physical disk... whether it blu-ray/ DVD etc... Guess Sony just don't see any value in adding UHD Blu-Ray disk drive.. guessing they cost slightly more per unit too.

Sure, but then what is the take up of these Pro consoles? For the PS4 it's something like 1/5, so at this stage it's still selling to the enthusiast market, the type who you'd imagine would be interested in UHD Blu-ray. I wouldn't be surprised if MS end up with a better ratio. I remember last year people were buying the S model purely for UHD Blu-ray, because it was cheaper and better than standalone players.

It would have been entirely a cost based decision; they had a target price and they wouldn't have met it with a UHD drive.

I'm pleased MS didn't follow suit with the One X, because it give me an excuse to justify one.

I'm not getting an Xbox One X

but not a hater!   I am a cynic.

if the new console was dedicated with its own super games, i would be in.

As it stands? quite happy to play Fifa 18 or that new Shadow Of War game on an Xbox one S

So, textures. The One X has an extra 4/5gb of RAM which can be used for high res textures. Are there any good quality videos or images showing the difference between 'typical' current gen console textures and the high res ones found on PC? I'm curious to see what that looks like on my TV as it's one of the main plus points for me (assuming devs actually bestow the high res textures on the X version) as I'm still on a 1080p tv.

I wasn't aiming it specifically at you, sorry. Just posting it as general relevance and interest.

Oh don't be silly

Ever since remakes and HDR jazz-ups have arrived, gaming has descended into a circus. That's all!

there are some good ones coming or already out like Crash Bandicoot and if they re-do  Red Dead Redemption I suppose. But programmers are wasting their time for easy money.

My Pro is increasingly noisy. Never mind 4k, it's a simple sell if Microsoft get the X as quiet as the rest of the Xbone family.

This.

My Pro's fan steps up at times though not too intrusive, but I'll be very happy if the X is as silent as the other Xboxes. Reason enough to jump ship for the multi-format titles.

It is, but they don't really throw enough bandwidth at it. netflix is about 15mbps; uhd bluray 60...

Yeah, streaming is fine for one-offs, or kids' films, but we buy BRs for the films we care about, and it always stands out how much better it looks/sounds.

5m, as in metres? You actually have room for a kinect (I don't, I need another foot or so to give it the proper room).

Yeah, my living room is around 5.5m square, so I've got plenty of room. I wouldn't bother with Kinect even if I got one for free though.

Tomb Raider X v Pro v PC

That's like Vaseline mode on the Pro in that vid. I'm playing it now and it's not so soft in 4K (whatever res the high resolution mode up-scales to) I'm not at any points with cut-scenes a la this video but in-game doesn't have that amount of softness. Are they comparing the higher frame-rate or extra shiny mode from the PS4 Pro to the One X in 4k? Looks like, but then I suppose the One X can do those modes plus resolution, just would have been less iffy to use the high resolution mode on Pro to compare. I have one pre-ordered but won't be starting Rise again.

There was a more accurate comparison two pages back:

This is the PS4P version compared to the Xbox One X. Apparently the video above is the PS4P outputting 1080p rather than the higher res mode.

Honestly, who cares? The 2013 game on PS3 looks better than all of them by virtue of being covered in marvellously psychotic levels of blood. Wake me up when one of these new gizmos hosts something even half as interesting as that.

File me under mildly bemused at the frankly insane levels of scrutiny being applied to practically indistinguishable imagery. Ahh, those old graphics are just super good, what you actually need are super duper good++ graphics because, as an industry, our asset generation costs simply aren't perilously high enough already. Amazing.

I seriously doubt those graphical enhancements over the Bone/PS4 make any real difference to the quality/enjoyment of the gameplay experience. A lot of emperor's new clothes in this mid-gen refresh.

Dude, that's exactly the point of a mid-gen refresh - better performance and prettier graphics. You decide whether that's worth it. Your complaint completely misses the very obvious reason these optional (note: optional) mid-gen refreshes exist and why people are interested.

I think it's a good thing. Remember how fucking creaky the 360 became towards the end of its lifespan because the generation went on for too long? Now you can do something about that besides jumping ship to PC. And since it's completely optional, there's no real downside.

If I didn't already have a PC more capable than the 1X (which ain't that remarkable btw) I'd be all over this on day one just for the improved performance. I haven't bothered with the Pro yet because it's barely an upgrade over the vanilla PS4 if you don't have a 4k tv. The 1X seems a lot more capable thankfully, and I'm interested in seeing how it improves BC performance - something that isn't a factor on PS4. I'll probably end up with both once the prices come down tho.
