it's a hard sell, to new customers, at £450. They should have learned that from the original bone launch.

Well I agree. Their current campaign is way off centre. What they should be doing, imo humble opinion, is doubling down on the S model and promoting the brand as a whole with some killer games. Sell the X too, of course, but at the moment it feels like this is their solution to the Xbox's ailing sales.

The guy on the sofa talking about it mentioned Fifa 18, which also isn't on the list.

I'm not sure "we sell technically shitter games on your system solely for marketing dollars" is going to be a publicity winner for EA/Activision.

I was just in the shower, and had a thought:

the Minecraft xbox one S cant fail!

"hey kids, you like miceraft, right? Look at this over-priced tat! Go ask your parents!"

"hey parents, for just X amount more, you could have the more powerful version of the console THAT ALSO PLAYS MIMESLAUGH (at 4k!)"

its win-win.

isn't the list just released games that are getting patched? Surely new releases are mandated to have X improvements? (like Sony did with the pro?)

Until the Minecraft Switch bundle, which also plays Mario, and Pokemon.

https://majornelson.com/blog/xbox-one-x-enhanced/

No COD:WWII or Destiny 2 enhancements.

Watchdogs 2, Battlefield 1 and RDR2* also missing from the list.

All games with PlayStation partnerships.

Is Sony ordering the publishers to shut their mouths about X enhancements or going a step further and buying 'enhancement exclusivity'? Will that be the new 'console launch exclusive' at E3 2018?

Also, Overwatch technically has Pro enhancements - if you're a fan of 4k HUDs.

*A fair way off but so is Anthem.

Well even if there isn't any specific updates / enhancements, by default the console will give the games faster load times, eliminate screen tearing, improve framerates, and if the game is made with a dynamic resolution, push full 1080p solid at all times.

But I would expect those games to have One X enhancements. The Sony agreement will just probably ban them talking about them before launch.

What's the Sony agreement?

PS4 versions are the games advertised, PS4 players get beta / dlc early, they also get exclusive content. Same thing happened with Destiny 1. Xbox Players were locked out of a specific mission and some weapons for over a year.

From memory, the weapon in Year 1 that was exclusive to Playstation for one year was Monte Carlo, a decent enough auto rifle. Not something you could not do without. I do not know what weapon was exclusive in Year 2.

On top of that, each Year gets 1 exclusive Strike (which is a dungeon) and 1 Crucible map (PvP). Again, nothing you should ever lose sleep over.

Hawkmoon was the other PS4-exclusive weapon, which was a genuinely badass piece of kit. Xbox owners did lose out for not getting that in year 1, but then again so did a lot of PS4 players (including me) as it seemed to be a pretty rare drop. The exclusive stuff doesn't seem like much of a problem for Xbox Destiny players.

Typically, yeah, but this isn't really a new console. It's a better version of the already existing model. So no doubt they are also trying to speak to those customers who've held off buying an Xbox One so far.

The message from MS from the gt go about the X has been it's a premium console.  This absolutely isn't for a newbie who doesn't currently have Xbox hardware.  There's way cheaper ways in on that front.  This thing is for people who want 4K gaming and/or movies.     I'm still not convinced yet that is your average consumer.  18 months time maybe. But not yet.

Remember that Digital Foundry article a month or so back?

Already released games get a slight automatic bump. No patch required

Already released games can be patched to get a modest increase in perfomance (textures and or res)

Anyone recompiling with the XDK that takes the XBox One X into account gets a big boost (this will be all unreleased games)

How it compares to PS4Pro we don't know but I don't think there's going to be what we have on the PS4 with this boost mode on/off thing.   From the article it sounded a lot like MS were taking more of the burden of making sure games scaled properly than the approcah Sony have taken (where the devs decide if the game has a Ps4Pro mode) as well as the boost mode switch.

This thing is going to be pretty cool.

Yes sure, but there will be some who haven't jumped on board yet that might be tempted because they've just bought a 4k TV, or plan to.

Eurogamer with the snark.

There were true 4K editions of Disneyland Adventures, Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure and Zoo Tycoon, all perfect for the discerning seven-year-old in your household who throws a hissy fit at the mere mention of checkerboarding.

Will it be enough to put Microsoft back on top? Of that I'm not so sure, but perhaps that's not the point - and maybe it never was. For all the bluster of the Xbox One X, and its proud claim to be the world's most powerful console, it seems right now its intentions are surprisingly modest. A boon for the fans, with a little exclusive vertical stand thrown in to boot. Given the hits the brand has taken over the past few years, staying upright might be all that can be asked for right now.

If you make your trade by having a section of your site dedicated to counting fucking pixel steps in gradients then you lose the freedom to take the piss on such things without having your bullshit called.

Oh and Zoo Tycoon isn't a game I would recommend for seven year olds.

okaaay...

"are you a 7year old playing zoo tycoon, and do you want it running in true 4k for just £450?"

was their point. Like, who are they selling this console to?

Is Zoo Tycoon for 7 year olds? I always assumed it was a pretty indepth sim.

The Xbox One version is some watered down kids version that was developed for use with Kinect.

Well that's not really the point of that snipe is it? The point is that this machine is aimed squarely at the hardcore tech geek crowd but Microsoft are so desperate for bullet points that they're touting native 4k on a bunch of games that the target market for the console will never play, and which kids won't give a shit about.

It's just slightly desperate to be selling your expensive cutting edge console off the back of a native 4K update to a four year old kids game that has a 68 metacritic rating, that's all. If Microsoft had actual exclusives worth talking about you can be damn sure they wouldn't be including chaff like that in its big sales pitch.
