Good news indeed! Netflix have ordered a Punisher series!

Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as vengeful military veteran Frank Castle, who brings his own lethal form of justice to Hell’s Kitchen.

Writer and executive producer Steve Lightfoot (Hanniba, Casualty) will serve as showrunner.

They're going to have to be suuuuper careful to not have this devolve into a 22-episode shoot-fest. The previous Punisher films failed for just being shooty-man shows and didn't explore characters enough. It'll be tough to do that in a series unless its like a small mini-series.

Just do The Slavers. It's a story about people so utterly vile and hateful you don't feel bad about seeing a psychotic vigilante throw a defenseless woman repeatedly into toughed glass till it finally breaks and she falls hundreds of feet to the streets below.

It does make me wonder how they're going to work the scheduling. With Jessica Jones confirmed as getting a second season, and things set up for a third season of Daredevil, they also need to fit in Iron Fist, The Defenders and now The Punisher. If they're daft they won't leave them all hanging too long.

Are we likely to see three series released per year instead of the current two?

Really doubt Netflix will do 22 episodes. Have they done 22 episodes for anything? Anyway, going by the crop of Marvel Netflix shows it will roughly be 13 episodes. I highly doubt a first season will have more.

If it's good enough for Dredd...

People worried that the Punisher won't be able to sustain his own series, that it would become samey all too quickly, should definitely read the Garth Ennis run on Punisher MAX. The writers of the show would be smart to stick as closely as possible to that run, as it is by far the best and the definitive Punisher storyline. There's more than enough there to fill at least ten seasons, but apart from that it's one of those rare comics that are so well-written that you can easily recommend them to non-comic book readers too. The only caveat is that the storylines can get extremely dark and violent, but it's never less than entertaining and gripping throughout. Ennis depicts Castle in a much more realistic manner than usual, a relentless but also pitiable straight up sociopath, but somehow manages to make him sympathetic as well. The series also features Barracuda, the best villain Netflix could wish for if they really want to make a hard and gritty show.

TL;DR: read Garth Ennis's Punisher Max and the writers of the Netflix show should do the same.

Already got series 1 of Luke Cage coming in September too. Something has to give.

A lot of that is to do with fear of whether or not the TV side would take off. Agents of Sheild and Agent Carter didn't exaclty do well to start off with, the Netflix is mles better because its much more slower paced and not big expansive series so stuff like Punisher could do very well in the shorter season format. Hell they don't even need to make them the same size as Dare Devil a 6-8 episode long run would work just as well.

That's a good point on the shorter episode run, and frankly (pun slightly intended), I'd be okay with shorter episode runs. I felt Jessica Jones in particular, although great, could have benefitted from being ten episodes rather than 13.

It just feels like they're happy to confirm series, but pretty cagey about announcing any kind of even rough release date (such as 'Coming Summer 2017'). Whether that's a control thing or they just want to use it to spread publicity is unclear.

They could, but they haven't been. Marvel/Netflix have been pretty cautious about confirming when series are going to be coming out so far.

Then I still don't understand why anyone is nervous about the schedule.

Not nervous at all! Just intrigued as to what they do with it. I'd be more than happy if they went to three series a year, as long as they felt they could maintain the quality.

I'd be fine with short episode runs, 4-6 maybe. In fact I can't really imagine The Defenders being done any other way. Would love to see Netflix experiment with a more British style of short series, maybe even three or so feature length episodes like with Sherlock.

I don't see a solo Punisher series staying interesting over 13 episodes unfortunately. Something small, focused and punchy could work though.

Remember the second Punisher Max outing, Kitchen Irish, being one of the most brutal things I've ever seen in any medium.

I remember one scene where some poor old woman opens a door and gets her face destroyed by a shotgun blast in every detail.

Any of those storied would make a great series, they could start with BORN and really hit the ground running

Well, nope! Barnes won’t be playing Bobby Saint after all but rather Billy Russo, also known to Marvel comic book fans as the villainous (and Frank Castle’s archenemy) Jigsaw.

Also joining the cast is Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Girls) in the role of the Punisher's sidekick Micro, a “former NSA analyst whose secrets may be of great value to Frank Castle and everyone around them.”

Not sure how I feel about a younger Micro. I think his portrayal as a 'gone to seed' older, overweight guy feels truer to the character. The kind of ex-spook who you could imagine had seen enough, and become cynical enough, to believe that Frank Castle is the best solution.

Man, I love the realism focused (if that's how you put it) Punisher they've created. It's given the character the edge he never had in the films.

Thing is, my other fond memory of the Punisher (aside from the christmas comic where he waits outside the shop with a gatling gun) is all the ridiculous kills from the old PS2 game. Is there anyway we can have both (realism /crazy OTT kills) without it turning into a shitfest?

I think the Punisher works better as a side character rather than a lead.

Check out the Punisher Max comics written by Garth Ennis (issues 1 - 60, paperback collections are available) if you want to be proven wrong. They could get at least six solid seasons out of that. It's also the kind of realism-focused Punisher combined with OTT kills that @Stevedave is looking for coincidentally and fits the tone of the Netflix series perfectly.
