Five PSP games? So many great titles to choose from, OK in no set order;

Megaman X Maverick Hunter

Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity

Power Stone Collection

Prinny : Can I Really Be the Hero?

Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together

Extra time mention for Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max

I'll could go on for some time, there are a lot of great games on the system.

Another vote for Tactics Ogre. It's phenomenonally good.

PuyoPuyo Fever 20th Anniversary - jam-packed with modes, good puzzler to have on the go.

Are you playing a translated version of this?  I have it but remember finding the menus a bit much to navigate.

Never played the PSP version of Killzone. The top down perspective looked cool.

Ended up sticking Picodrive on it last night and spending a couple hours playing Rocket Knight Adventures

Some of these are essential, some are just alt recommendations. I love the PSP more than has ever been healthy.

Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger VS Darkdeath Evilman - largely ignored, largely brilliant.

MGS Peace Walker - until MGSV was the best in the series, yes even better than 3, and portable is the Way It's Meant To Be Played.

Patapon series - PON PON PATA PON

Warhammer 40,000: Squad Commander - not like super-recommended, but a good alternative to Killzone Liberation.

Any of the other tactical RPGs like FF Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Jeanne D'Arc. Oh, and the GTA games are brilliant. And, if you don't have a Vita, Everybody's Golf. Half Minute Hero. God of War. Loads of stuff. What a machine.

This thread prompted me to dig out my old PSP 1000 to finally play Jeanne D'Arc or Brave Story. You forget just how small a thing it was. I've played a lot of PS Vita since that was released and it seems massive next to the PSP. The bad news is it's now got a glitch where the Home button is registering presses when I move the console, boo! It's pretty much unplayable. The good news is it justifies me picking up a PSP Go, which I wanted when it was released but couldn't justify the cost.

The PSP was a strange one. I purchased mine a few weeks after the Japanese release from a fellow forumite, and it was the future. Having a game like Ridge Racers in the palm of your hand just seemed amazing. During the first couple of years I poured hours into the console, before becoming fed up with load times and poor control schemes, so that pretty much all the later releases passed me by. Thus, my list mainly covers the early days when it was amazing.

Ridge Racer 2arguably the best Ridge Racer. Perfect for a handheld.

Lumines - brilliant puzzle game, that I only stopped playing once it reached a point that a single game would take me between 2 and 3 hours.

Everybody’s Golf - golf is a perfect game for a handheld. Combine that with a huge amount of unlockables and you have a classic.

Initial D: Street Stage - port of Sega’s arcade drift racer. Technically a time attack game, which is perfect for a handheld. Great cheesy soundtrack.

Everybody’s Tennis - I actually played this on the Vita, so loading times could be atrocious. They added a story mode - similar to Mario Tennis on the GBC and GBA (and the forthcoming Switch release for that matter). Again perfect for a quick 10 minute blast or a prolonged game session.

Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast

The problem I have with the PSP version is that it controls noticeably worse than all the other versions available due to the significantly worse performance, even with the pared back visual compromises. The PS2 version isn't 100% performance stable either but still plays much better. For that major reason I don't personally rate it.

If I was to recommend a portable racer from that gen, the DS version of Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is a better playing game, runs at 60fps and controls much better, I'd say it's actually the best console version of that particular game purely because it uniquely targets 60fps and feels really great to play, seems pretty unsung too.

Can't think of too many PSP games I've even played as the catalogue, despite being pretty big just doesn't leap out at me. I suppose if you can find people to co-op with, then Monster Hunter is a good exclusive to play, though that can really be played anywhere these days.

If you were to recommend a racer from that gen, you'd really pick a DS game?

Racers were the PSP's strongest genre for me.  The TOCA games, both Ridge Racers, the Wipeouts, Burnout Legends, Midnight Club, Initial D, The Fast and the Furious were all excellent.  I'm astounded that anyone would recommend a DS game ahead of those.

Well I'm not the biggest fan of most of those series in the first place :P, or in the case of Burnout, I'd stick to the superior home console versions, much like OutRun 2.

Which I think is the biggest problem the PSP had during its life, it was like a portable but inferior platform to play many games I could play elsewhere, which is why I suppose it's considered a failure in the West, despite selling a more than fair amount of consoles. I'm much more fond of the DS for that reason, it actually had many exclusive good games I hadn't played before.

I couldn't get on with Legends at all.  The resolution meant I found it really hard to work out what was approaching.

Sega Rally I much preferred over the big consoles.

The PSP version of Tokyo Highway Challenge/Shutokou Batlle was a terrible letdown.  I still haven't got round to trying Wangan Midnight.

Outrun 2006 needs to be played on a PSP with custom firmware so you can up the CPU to 333Mhz. It runs so well like that that I can't help but wonder if it was programmed for that clock speed.

I was just about to post that. I have it at 333Mhz and it runs silky smooth most of the time. Occasionally dips but nothing compared to out of the box.
