Sony PSP Appreciation Thread

The excellent ModernVintageGamer just did a video about how the PSP got hacked:

I well remember the whole 1.5 downgrade thing, then it got to 3.0 or so and things got a lot more stable. It's strange to think that the original 1.0 Japanese model could run unsigned code out of the box.

Rip 'em to memory card with CFW and put them on the shelf.

Whilst a great idea, I find having too much choice available instantly to be too much of a distraction. I'm purposely keeping my PSP games on a shelf above the stairs to avoid me umming and aahing over what to play.

You'll get longer battery life too as you're not moving mechanical parts about.

I don't take it with me when I leave the house really.

Do you mean it's physically moved in the case, or the image is displaying incorrectly?

The latter could be one of several things, like the ribbon cable coming partly detached or damaged, a display chip failing, or lots of other stuff. Replacements seem to be cheap, but fitting it might be a bugger (although I'm sure @Das could help out with that).

Can you post pix?

Just realised you'd replied. I'm currently on holiday for a week so I'll be sure to post pics when I get back.

The actual image has shifted, the actual screen is as it has always been.

I'll write up more impressions of it later on in the week for my blog as I've only spent an hour with it tonight but what it actually is is a Twisted Metal kind of game with a Gangsta Rap/GTA San Andreas theme to it. There's standard races, survival races and arena battles with things like shotguns, miniguns etc as pick ups. There's a girl driving your "whip" (one of the sound bites is "damn girl watch my whip!") and the main character hangs out the passenger side, you then hold R to shoot forwards and  Lto shoot behind

Let me know if it’s any good.

If you like Japanese arcade racers then it’s worth seeking out Initial D Street Stage. It was only released in Asia and by PSP standards is probably expensive but I put hours into it. It’s great.

Here's my thoughts on Street Riders

Had a bit of time to myself today now all three kids are back at school (eldest went back today, middle one today and youngest was at nursery this morning) so went for a stroll around the charity shops, only found this

Just had a sift through some of the boxes at my folks and found my silver MGPO PSP with a 2GB Memory Stick in it and a copy of Tekken Dark Resurrection sadly however there is no charger with it.

Where would be the best place to get a cheap charger for it?

I have the usb cable for the console but it doesn't charge via usb if i remember correctly right? Well no lights seem to be coming on from it anyway.

Try a different USB port, mine doesn’t charge from ones with fast charge just in case that is occurring

Depends on the model too I think, I could be wrong but I don't think 1000s charge from usb? Or if they do it's something you'd have to turn on in the settings.

Mine's the first model that came out if i remember rightly.

Looking at it again it looks like the metal gear portable ops part just unclips like some kind of casing.

You can get a wire on ebay that looks like you can just pop it into an iphone charger to get it to charge it.

Finally got round to actually taking a picture

You can see darker vertical bars and the lettering all bunching up at certain points. There is a grey gap on the right hand side.

The longer it stays on the worse it gets.

  • 2 months later...

After reading this thread last week I decided to take the plunge on a PSP. Paid £60 for a mint unboxed red 3003. Wasn't sure if it was a good price but didn't mind really, my local game shop has done me some amazing deals over the years (Vintage Gamer in the black country If anybody cares).

I got it home and a few days later realised it had a bunch of emulators on it and was packed full of games, very nice surprise.

The games I picked up are...

Sega Rally

Virtua Tennis Pro Tour

Bubble Bobble Evolution

Micro Machines V4

Capcom Collection Reloaded

Got the lot for £13 which I thought was a decent enough deal, not really sure what they're going for on Ebay. I'd imagine it won't be much.

Anyway, Sega Rally is fantastic. It's criminal I didn't play this when it was released, I'm not sure many people did mind. I'd imagine sales weren't great but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I'll have to try the console version at some point.

Played a bit of Virtual tennis, finding it a bit difficult at the moment but just need to practice I think. Enjoying it nonetheless.

Played 1942 on the Capcom Collection, I'm horrid at it but i do love that game. Looking forward to getting into the other games, pretty sure I had this for the PS2 back in the day.

Micro Machines has been fun but it seems to be missing something that the earlier games in the series had. I'm not sure what it is though. Maybe it'll get better as I get further Into it.

Only game i am unsure about is Bubble Bobble, the guy who sold me it kind of gave me a grimace when he saw me choose it. I didn't know it had been released on PSP either, hopefully I get a nice surprise.

Last thing to note is the screen seems better to me now than it did back when it was released. Maybe I only saw the earlier models back in the day.

TLDR

Fun times ahead.
