So much want.

Latest horse is a beast. Literally.

It's half dragon! :omg:

Completed two more puzzles, think the bonuses for doing so will be much more beneficial than the 'Go' button boost:

Bonus XP for specific trainers in Growth Mode e.g. Completing Truman's pic unlocks his bonus XP

Blue Steel retired level 10, 12 wins, 4 G1 cups. She's on the farm making babies with Fireball. They have good stats and matching peak times so should see some good foals from them.

THIS GAME IS AMAZING!

Started the demo last night and quite enjoyed it. It's got a nice script that raised a smile more than once. I'm finding that I'm living or dying on the S-T-A-R-T-! quite a lot, which is easily the hardest part of the game so far. But yeah, it's very nice. Will probably upgrade to the full game.

Yeah, the start can be quite tricky. Here's my method:

I watch carefully and look for the 5-star card. As soon as it drops, I tap the first card in front and quickly add matches until the deck opens up. Then I just skip through the deck as quickly as I can until I pull one that can get rid of the last card in front of the 5-star (so if there's a '7' in front, I just skip through as quickly as I can until I pull a 6 or an 8). I haven't failed once since I've employed this tactic!

Okay, feel a bit cheated by the supposed boosts to XP, not seen any noticeable difference from any of them. Disappointing.

Still got a few G1 trophies to win, and stil haven't bred a truly amazing horse yet. 70

hours in, not run out of steam yet

@Toblerone - to get the different horse types you need to select the non-bred horses, and then win at least one G1 race with that horse. Next time you start growth mode, a new horse type should be available.

Can't remember the exact order (or the proper names), but these are some of the later varieties:

Witch

Dragon

Pink Ninja

Light Blue

Robot

The first G1 race (Fillies' Championship / Platinum S) are the easiest to win in year 1 of growth mode; the shorter G1 races in year 2 are more straightforward if you miss out of a G1 in your first season. Found stamina to be a greater benefit than speed, save for the big G1 races such as the International Cup or Royal Deby. Raced well in those but never been quick enough in the home straight - most recent loss came against a horse with 180 speed!

This thread has some useful QR codes for breeding: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/724556-pocket-card-jockey/73734056 - added a couple of horses earlier and the first foal I got is strong (speed and stamina both 60+). However, XP appears to be completely nerfed - moved up a level and got 2-3 points added to stats, despite completing the owner puzzles that is supposed to improve the rate XP is added.

Wish there was a clearer way to know how much XP you are going to earn, as collecting the cards during races doesn't appear to affect the boost to actual stats, only the rate at which your level increases. I mean, you can collect 6 horseshoe cards, have several heart cards left over and a boost card (or two), move up a level and only receive a couple of points increase. Appears entirely random.

Tipped into a love / hate relationship with this now!

Ran the Duchess Cup almost faultlessly, 3 perfect scores in level 3 solitaire and only missed 1 card in level 2; had full stamina, 98 enthusiasm and a boost card but still got beaten by over two seconds (coming 6th overall). I wouldn't mind if I'd done something wrong, just hard to take when skill / good performance isn't rewarded. Was probably a bit salty from previously missing out on the Royal Derby by a nose too.

Anyway, cool Tumblr page for anyone that wants some more breeding options: http://pocketcardjockeycatalog.tumblr.com/

Aaaaand done, all G1 races won! :omg:

Will pick up and play from time to time, try and get all the course records (currently hold 16 of them) but also hoping a sequel / update comes in the future. Would like to have the ability to choose race distance and level as lost count of the amount of horses suited to sprinting that ended up in the stamina-sapping mid and long races, or get smashed to pieces in GIs they have no hope of winning. GI races could offer more XP in growth mode, whereas GII and GIII races offer shorter solitaire games but earn less XP. Hurdles would make for an interesting dynamic if it could be incorporated into the gameplay (minigame / QTE?) and would be satisfying to be able to chase certain skills rather than having them randomly assigned. With a sequel they could probably add in more varieties of solitaire (clock, spider), maybe a more varied calendar and the chance to travel to more than just the International Cup.

Anyway, as it is still a great game and easily the best value I've got from a game in years - 100+ hours for under a tenner. It's made me late for work, it's made me grin like a loon. Easily one of my games of the year and well worth seeking out if you have any love of puzzles and that quirkiness that is often found on Nintendo platforms.

This game is definitely one of those inspired flashes of brilliance but I cant do more than a race or so in a session. Despite its avalanche of charm I find it too intense and I haven't kept up with all the mechanics - despite the game continually offering advice and its lack of overt penalisation when it all goes tits up.

Still playing this, my next horse name is now locked in. 'Your Mum' still is my favourite.

Have 3 races I think I've not won yet, but as it's such a joy to play, its not at all frustrating

Ha just bought this on 3DS eShop cos I was worried it might disappear forever. Means it will definitely be on Switch/Steam Deck sooner or later I'm sure.
