Anyone else downloaded the demo for this? I love games that combine a card game with another genre; Sword & Poker on iOS is a particular favourite of mine and I've been on the lookout for something similar ever since. The demo is lovely, with fun dialogue and several interesting game mechanics, and it's not quite as simple as 'play solitaire, your horse runs'. It's out on 5th May apparently, about £6.

Give the demo a try! It carries your progress over.

How to describe it? At its simplest, you play mini games of solitaire to win a horse race. From my early impressions each race is split into different sections - the start, the race, and the homestretch - and each has a different time limit. You need to get a decent start, keep your horse in a good mood, meneuvour your horse into a position where it's most comfortable (this varies between horses, and is a clever touch), and manage the stamina. Another nice touch is that any stamina remaining at the end of a race gives you experience, so if you cannot win the game encourages you to hold back and save it.

I've just unlocked a horse called 'Blingin' Kid'. Amazing.

  • 1 month later...

Bought this the other day and have gone from having no idea what I'm doing to possible game of the year. It's magic.

To be honest I still don't really know what I'm doing, but more than I did and it's really, really addictive. Plus it's funny. And you get to breed horses. Pretty challenging too. And brilliant.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON! It's absolutely ace. Really.

YES!

It's so good. I bought the full game and played what felt like a few rounds, thinking I'd played for a couple of hours. I checked my play time and it was closer to ten

Just enough of it is based on luck, with an equal amount of skill required, which makes it so addictive. Not winning every time is entirely normal and absolutely fine, which you don't often get in games.

It takes a while to adjust to not having to win at all cost. Also panicked that I wasn't earning enough skill points but think the game just lets you keep going until you can start breeding and creating better horses.

I kind of don't want to read too much about the mechanics, and just absorb it naturally. It's a truly bizarre game, but equally charming. If you've got any craving for a puzzle game on your 3DS, can't imagine anything more joyously absurd to fritter away time with. Fantastic.

So, Nintendo posted a couple of QR codes for breeding horses on their Tumblr (!) account. I think you just scan them with your 3DS camera to get the horses... Will try later.

This game is amazing.

It really, really is. If you own a 3DS and enjoy puzzle games, you need this in your collection.

Won my first G1 trophy :omg:

And another! :omg::omg:

Second one was a fairytale finish to my horse's junior career. She won by a nose, having swapped 1st and 2nd spot down the home straight. Genuine air-punch in triumph, was made up! Will run her in a few mature races, then send her off to the farm. Unlocked Blingin' Kid next, so aiming to raise a decent stallion next.

This damn game.

Tried scanning these last night and just get an error message saying 'Unsupported QR Code'. I was trying to take a shot from my phone screen so that may have been the issue.

Yeah, didn't have much luck on iPad - the actual image on Tumblr is pretty big, so probably works in browser.

Think the GB crew mentioned this is on phones in Japan. However, it's daunting enough in English, navigating a Japanese version would be like trying to climb Everest in tennis gear. On the plus side, if a phone version does exist, then a translation could happen at some point if there's enough demand.

Just thinking about the little horses running around corners makes me go all giggly. Not a dig at Uncharted 4, but can't escape the fact I'm more drawn to just 'one' more race than I am my PS4 at the moment.

Wait, what... there's a solitaire golf game?!

Everything should be solitaire.

With funny voiced commentary as you play. Think they added a whole load of F2P stuff since I last played it though.

Cool, downloaded it but not had chance to play yet - there are IAPs, but hopefully the game can still be fun without needing them.

This thread is already a love-in, but the risk / reward of Pocket Card Jockey is pretty cool. Once you fully grasp the mechanics and how they effect your , each race becomes vital but for different reasons, such as @Paulando suggested with holding back if you're not in a favourable position to win. And which comfort zone to go for? Do you sacrifice position to get more EXP cards during games and increase a horse's potential for breeding future champions, which will in turn make future races easier to win? Or just go for glory now?

Game hits a sweet spot of being fun, challenging and 'just one more go' playability. Sorry (not sorry) if it's starting to get repetitive, but this game is bloody brilliant.

2 second victory?! Smashed it! Has anyone got close to any of the course records yet?! Guessing they becomes more possible with better horses that possess some of the skills that unlock.

Probably the closest is Fairway Solitaire, which I've just started on my iPhone for when I don't have my 3DS with me. It's not as good, and it does feel a bit 'fremium' sometimes, like it's overly hard just to squeeze some money out of you. Nowhere near as bad as some other games mind, and overall it is enjoyable.

Sword & Poker mixes RPGs with poker hands and is brilliant. The new 'Adventures' version is IAP-ridden shit, and it's pretty much impossible to progress unless you spend lots of cash, but the originals are wonderful.

Think it's PC only right now but Big Fish have this new thing called Regency Solitaire. Like Fairway, but with ladies and lords and a whole story and that.

Whoop, now got two decent horses ready to breed. Paired them up so guess I just wait for War Bastard to work his magic.

New horse, Violent Clunge, is pretty useless. No stamina, although picked up a couple of wins in G3. Next few horses will be experiments in gaining as much XP as possible. WB got to level 8, reckon level 10 is doable with a decent breeding program.

Only gripes so far 1) the shop prices take a huge leap that isn't really balanced with the amount of prize money on offer 2) having less margin for error in mature mode would be cool. Don't like that horses only can lose 3 times (even 3 2nd places sees them retire). Minor gripe though, as growth is the more involved portion of the game, was just a little sad to send War B to the farm when thought he had a few more wins in his little legs.
