Concerts - general discussion and experiences

I've got a month or so with no gigs but then the month leading up to Christmas it all goes a bit mad. So far, in the space of a few weeks I'm seeing Anais Mitchell, Honeyblood, Larkin Poe and Reverend & the Makers, all with my regular gig buddies, plus I'm taking my Dad to see Status Quo (his all time favourite band, who he's seen a few times but I never have) as his Christmas present.

And on Thursday I'm going to try and get tickets for me and my boys, and possibly my Dad too, to see Iron Maiden next May. The boys loved seeing Axl/DC and they're looking forward to this one already (and I am too of course - it will be the third time I've seen Maiden, but the first time in 25 years!)

I decided against Maiden tickets. I just can't justify the outlay any more. Saw them live quite a few times but not for over 20 years. I'm also not a big fan of their newer stuff.

Plus I'm skint from going to see Billy Joel and I have Jean Michel Jarre and Bad Company in the next couple of weeks and Acid Mothers Temple on Saturday if I can find anyone willing to go with me lol

Yeah, I've not bothered for any of their recent tours (by which I mean in the last two and a half decades) even though I do like all their albums since Bruce & Adrian came back. I only bothered with this one because the boys are old enough to want to go with me now, and my Dad is also coming, so it will be a family outing!

Anyway, I managed to get onto the site at 9:00:000001am and bagged some excellent seats. Now to spend the next six months educating the boys on the wonders of classic Maiden. They think AC/DC are better, the idiots.

Was asked by my sister in law to accompany her to a New Model Army concert in Maastricht the other night and had a blast. Wasn't really familiar with the band to be honest, but when they opened with the second cut of their new album (Burn The Castle) I knew I was in for a high energy night. As soon as the lights dipped and the band came on, the guy in front of me pulled his shirt off and literally launched himself into the middle of the audience, knocking a load of people around but he quickly found kindred spirits and the centre middle of the hall became a throng of bare chested, fist pumping fans, most of whom were covered from head to foot in NMA tattoos.

Was a cracking gig though, great sound, great vibe, crowd surfers, brilliant set. They even came back after the lights had gone up and did one more unscripted track. The highlight was probably another cut from their new album (and yes, I came home with it), Born Feral, which is a real drum driven track. The bassist came to the side of the stage and there was a second set of three drums set up from which he hammered out the tribal beats of the track, which the actual drummer complimented wonderfully. Incredible moment and they got such applause for it, louder than even for the final encore I think.

Great night anyway. Nice to go and see a band where you don't quite know what you're going to get and end up enjoying it. Would almost certainly go and see them again.

I am very excited, after a successful Iron Maiden concert I am taking my 9yr old daughter to see Black Sabbath at the end of this month. I have her listening to a playlist of the songs that 'should' be on that evening to help her really get in to it. After that we have two cover bands I am excited to take her too, Led Zeppelin Masters,

, and pink floyd tribute Brit Floyd.

I had my first gig of the year last night too - the Pretty Reckless at Nottingham Rock City.

They were great, it was rammed, and as it was the first show of their European tour they were all utterly jet lagged which gave the show a ramshackle charm* that I'm sure is missing when they're properly awake and firing on all cylinders.

*the odd mistake here and there, plus long gaps between songs, when they were presumably asking each other "what's next?" "how does that one go?" "what's the first chord?" etc.

Anthrax at Rock City tonight. They were incredible. First time I've seen them but it won't be the last. They played for two hours (with an interval!) and were as tight as a gnat's chuff from beginning to end. It's a long time since I've been so blown away by a band's performance.

If they're coming anywhere near you on this tour, go!

Saw Pumarosa last night. Tiny little venue. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I was at the Glasgow gig the following night. Been following Pumarosa for a while but this was the first chance I'd got to see them. How'd you get into them @The Hierophant?

The Poetry Club is this gigantic warehouse in the west end of the city and I'd went with the expectation that we'd be stood in the middle of some giant space, all atmosphere lost but the actual gig was in the tiniest part of the place, practically a cloakroom tbh and it was fucking excellent.

Some pics from the night. Including when we met the lead singer, Isabel (she was cool; that's not me btw, that's my younger brother), the setlist that I snagged from their bass player (with travel details from Birmingham on the reverse) and the signed vinyl that Isabel sold me after the gig. Honestly one of the best gigs I've been to. And on a Tuesday too!

@Glasgowchivas  Priestess popped up in my Spotify Discovery playlist a while ago and I loved it. Sort of post-punk and funky.

Being a lover of live music I have Spotify linked to Bandsintown and Songkick to track gigs. I also live near the Hare and Hounds and it's a great venue so I'm trying to go to see as many bands there as I can. I love small gigs.

Off to see the Beat and Selector tonight.

Biggest disappointment was definitely Soundgarden at Reading '95. Cornell just looked fed up and bored, and they imploded due to infighting not long after, so I guess that's why. Closely followed by Iron Maiden at Twickenham on the Somewhere Back In Time tour. I think the Live After Death set is still one of the greatest live sets, and they were game enough, but the sound was attrocious.

Copy that. I had the same in Aberdeen a few years ago.

Best ? Metallica

Theyve been awesome whenever ive seen them, particularly in Belfast with the circular stage and the crowd round them.

Shout out to Pink who ive seen twice and she was phenomenal both times.

I've been to a couple of gigs in the last week. First was Wilko Johnson at Nottingham Rock City. He was great, and it was good to see him and Norman Watt-Roy (ex-Blockheads bassist) playing together, but overall it was a bit underwhelming. There was virtually no between song banter beyond "thank you" after each song, which I was surprised by as in interviews he always comes across as a witty and thoughtful guy. Perhaps he was just having an off day. It wasn't helped by the crowd which was the oldest I think I've seen at Rock City - normally we look around to see if we're the oldest people in the audience, but this time we might have been the youngest!

Then the other night we saw Bryde at the Bodega. This is the new kind-of-solo project from the singer out of Paper Aeroplanes, who you've probably never heard of either. They were really good but the venue was less than half full so again there was a bit of a subdued atmosphere.

Next week I'm taking my boys and my dad to see Iron Maiden at the Ice Arena! Which will be a rather different experience to all these little gigs I usually go to. I had to laugh when the tour was announced and they're playing indoor arenas rather than stadiums because they miss the "intimate atmosphere." I don't think it will feel very intimate in block 8 row L, but I'm looking forward to it anyway, just because it's Iron Maiden and I get to share it with the other rockers in my immediate family.

2011-ish?  I was massively disappointed as I felt they phoned it in.  Not that they were bad, indeed the opposite, but the whole thing felt like "another day, another gig" and they were on autopilot.
