Right. I don't understand why someone as rich as them doesn't have bodyguards when they live in a city like Gotham.

depending on your point of view, that was bruce's fault, and the Waynes didn't need bodyguards in a city that had been good to their family.

 

you can mostly rule out any claims of it been a a professional hit, due to the random nature of their early exit, their route, and the outcome.

 

despite what you learned in films and tv shows.

Criminals don't care about the Waynes.  I would for sure have bodyguards if I was Thomas Wayne.  Especially one looking after Bruce.  Kidnapping for ransom.

 

Though they aren't bad parents, just short sighted at how bad Gotham really is.
