Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Recommended Posts

Interestingly, for someone who has a small but slightly important role, Joseph Gordon-Levitt only saw the film recently. He's addressed the criticism of Luke's character in this in a good piece on medium:

Recently, I went to see the new Star Wars. I know, I wanted to see it sooner, but I have babies. Anyway, getting home from the cinema, I was curious to see what people were saying about the movie, and what I discovered surprised me. While most critics and many fans loved it as much as I did, there was also a passionate contingent who decidedly didn’t.

I was intrigued. A lot of my favorite movies polarize audiences. Many, many voices had much to say, and I only got through reading a tiny speck of it, but right away, I noticed a recurring theme in the various objections. In fact, I noticed a number of recurring themes, and I’m tempted to write down my thoughts about several of them. But in the interest of brevity (and the likelihood that I actually manage to finish writing this), I’ll limit myself to this one:

What happened to Luke Skywalker?

More at the link of course!

That's a really good article. I like the big where he contrasts how we find Luke in TLJ compared to Han on TFA. Not only does Han not seem to have changed over the last 30 years, he's actually regressed to how he was at the beginning of A New Hope! I actually imagined Han ending up similar to how Luke actually turned out. Jaded, bedraggled and grumpy. Probably because that's all Harrison Ford seems to do since the 90s.

I'm quite tempted to go and see The Last Jedi again this weekend if only to show that we're not all scared of films with lots of women in leading roles. Plus I really like it.

In fact I might go and see it every weekend it's still on.

Well me and one of my boys have decided to do a back to back special on Sunday, so we're watching the Force Awakens DVD from lunchtime then going to see the Last Jedi at 4.30.

I was a bit surprised that there's only one showing per day at my local cinema this weekend, but then again it has been out over a month now so there can't be many people left going to see it besides saddoes superfans like me.

Earlier I'd say, that pretty much describes Deckard too.

Jesse Thorn interviewed Rian Johnson on the latest episode of Bullseye. They're friends so don't expect hard hitting quetions but there is some interesting discussion about the place for comedy in Star Wars and some talk about decisions made, especially about Rey's parentage.

It's spoiler filled so be warned. Also it's at the front of the podcast, no need to jump halfway through.

I like that they have to explain that the purpose of Luke having a hut is so that he can shelter from the weather. Thanks for clearing that one up!

I had a flick through the Last Jedi Visual Dictionary earlier and discovered this little gem about Luke's front door:

I'll show myself out.

Ok, theres a pretty good quality rip out there... watched it finally... I say watched it... I've made it through about 1/3 before I got bored shitless and turned it off.....

Yeah it doesnt really get that much better. I'd say the latter half is better but the B-plot with rose/finn is so pointless and redundant. Good thing they made new characters just to make them irrelevant.

Rose is like that vegetarian, christian girl at school that always puts her hand up first, and imposes her views on you - weather you want to listen or not.

Poor Finn. No wonder he tried to kill himself.

And watching Poe go through the movie being neutered and treated like an imbecile - is about as exciting as watching Han sit through a twelve step - gamblers anonymous lecture - for 2 and a half hours.

Only less fun.

True colours? You total muppet.

He was stopped from adventuring, and turned into a masochist arse by Ryan Johnson, for pretty poor plot reasons.

And not liking badly written characters is completely different, to not liking female characters. Unless you are a simpleton.

I’ve said before that one of the best things about this new Star Wars film, is that it’s an amazing idiot-parsing tool and perfect for updating my ignore settings.

Wow! And for pointing this out I get a full on Neg stalked?! As mentioned, idiot-parsing and this just proves my point.

I’m not a paid up member anymore but I’ll certainly assume it’s one person.

Of course, regarding this or anything, it’s fine to not like something. That’s ones own prerogative and taste, but it’s certainly brought a lot of proper terrible attitudes out of the woodwork.

I would rather have Jar Jar back than suffer any more of Rose.  And that's not being sexist or racist.  She was just an awful character and actress.

Really? I thought Rose was alright.

You may not have liked her part, but an awful actress? That’s pretty weird.

Yeah. I agree with whoever said the casino jaunt should have been a Finn & Poe adventure - especially as the latter ended up being massively underused in the movie - meaning Rose either didn't need to exist or could have stayed with the fleet for that part (they could have then come up with some reason she had to do the trip to First Order ship) but thought she was quite good in herself, certainly not that anything was actually objectionable about her.

Rose was likeable, and I never thought she was badly acted. Badly written in places, especially the heavy handed sentiment on the casino planet but not badly acted.

Her character could have been actually used more - She's an engineer so they should have had her be the brains of the outfit who could defeat security systems.

That way they could have got rid of the whole casino planet subplot and the atrocious codebreaker. I think if there's any hate reserved for characters in this film, he should be pretty high up the list.

I'd have preferred the casino trip to have been luke and rey. A little side quest to collect someone or something before heading to the finale.

Except Luke was quite keen on staying where he was, it was kind of a big deal that he wasn't going anywhere. Kind of his MO most of the film?
