But we did get one of my favourite things in robot wars, when a school project gets absolutely destroyed.

I can't watch this live anymore as the background stuff just takes too long, i want robots tearing shreds out of each other, not the life story of the people behind it. iplayer makes this watchable.

Watch battle bots on demand on sky - this new series has been carnage, and much less guff, each ep is only 45m on demand and still has a few ads to ffwd

Back on 22 October. Apparently some new stuff, like fog of war (stick a smoke machine in with the robots) and a 10 robot rumble. That's apparently the 2nd and 3rd place robots stuck in together. Fog of War sounds like it could be bad too. Add a period where nobody can see anything.

Ooh awesome.

In the last month I've seen a RW robot at uni and chatted to a roboteer on tinder. I feel like I should expand more on these experiences but I just can't be bothered. Looking forward to watching the new series though!

Always kind of feel sorry for Gabriel, its quite clearly designed in a way that it takes abuse, so its always going to lose out when it comes to a judges decision as the team aren't aggresive enough and it doesn't deal anywhere near enough damage. But then I see the Dad and I cant help but find him really creepy.

Machines like Gabriel are symptomatic of everything that is wrong with Robot Wars for me. No offensive capability whatsoever.

Battlebots has the right idea. Its rules stipulate that every entrant must have at least one offensive weapon capable of causing significant damage to opponents. If the weapon fails or is disabled/incapacitated, then that machine can no longer score any points for offence. Any further strikes, such as ramming, are classed as strictly defensive.

Too many competitors in Robot Wars have no offence, and consequently no game plan other than stay out of the way where possible, soak up damage where necessary, and hope the opponent either breaks down or drives into the pit.

"Takes a licking and keeps on ticking" might be technically impressive on some level but in no way does it make for interesting TV.

I watched Battlebots last year and though the robots seemed a bit behind the curve in comparison to the better robots in Robot Wars. Exposed wheels and no SRIMECHs in Battlebots means they wouldn't last very long against the better spinners and flippers that are out there. Has this changed in this series ?

The problem with Robot Wars is the gulf in ability between some of the Robots. Having said that I quite enjoyed Sunday's episode.

I can only really think of Gabriel as an example that fits this, every other bot is a flipper, spinner or cluster bot, all trying to copy (in recent years) the success of Apollo and Carbide, fuck knows why anyones bothering with Cluster bots, I think the only memorable team with a Cluster Bot was Gemini? Theres been hardly any Ram types (like Tornado) since the series returned.

Wow, terrific self-destruction

I knew it wouldn't work, it's not really the size of your spinner that matters but how fast you can get it to spin. I wouldn't be surprised though if the rules are changed for next series as it was rather dangerous.

Smashing through the polycarbonate shields and taking out stage lighting all makes for spectacular telly. But if it had shaken itself to bits like that in testing, it could easily have killed someone.

I don't think that fact was lost on the contestant when he said "we will never build anything like this again".

That was the only entertaining part of a rather boring episode. I'm not too sure about the fog of war. I think that would be better if there were a few more arena hazards or pits, but its more of a pause button than a panic button.

Although i did get to see one of my favourite events, the school children vs the team of engineers with massive amounts of funding. I hope they are saving the more destructive bots for later in the series as this all seems a bit like a village fete compared to battlebots.

I knew the giant spinner was going to be a huge mistake the moment I saw it. I remember the Carbide (I think) team having problems a season or two ago when they realised the reciprocal physics of hitting things hard with a spinner takes a toll on both ends. Even then, I wasn't expecting it to be quite so amazing.

And we got to see another emotionally unstable manchild taking things too seriously, also.

Most of the other robots weren't great though. I think maybe being able to flip robots out of the arena is anti-climactic. Maybe just let the various impacts of being flipped into the air take their toll?
