SOLO: A Star Wars Story

Recommended Posts

Well I haven't enjoyed the Marvel films since the first few as I feel they're being run into the ground. So doing a young Han Solo film, especially this early on doesn't exactly fill me with confidence that they're going to do any better on that front with the Star Wars franchise.

Great news. Be honest, Disney really haven't put a foot wrong so far, have they?

They've made a grand total of one Star Wars film.

Point still stands.  It's a brilliant film that exceeded just about everyone's expectations.  Rogue One looks excellent, you can't help but be optimistic about Episode VIII and now even the Han Solo spin-off is shaping up nicely. What more could you want?

The Young Han Solo film is shaping up nicely in the sense that they've cast someone in the lead role who looks a bit like Han Solo. Good work guys, you managed to resist casting Don Cheadle or David Cross.

I'd have thought you'd be the first to appreciate that they've given the part to a genuinely talented young actor who doesn't really look that much like Harrison Ford.

Anyway, why's everyone still so grumpy about Star Wars?  It's okay guys, George has gone now.  We're safe!

Probably because a 'young Han Solo' film seems like a duff and predictable idea, unlike Rogue One.

That guy looks older than the young 'old' Han Solo though.

Not really. And he's 9 years younger.

Have you seen Civil War yet? Deadpool?

EDIT @Fury

Saw Deadpool, thought it was Ok not amazing. As has been said though, it's not a Disney film and so is pretty different to Disney's movies and that was the only reason I saw and enjoyed it. No interest at all in Civil War.

This will be fine so long as they make it about young Han's scrapes in the galactic underworld as a small time smuggler. It doesn't need to have him involved in anything big to do with the Empire or any momentous events.

Of course it absolutely DOES need to include him winning the Falcon from young Lando. And meeting Chewie. And dumping his shipment at the first sign of an Imperial starship. (I will allow the Empire to be in that one scene.)

Don't fancy the story about him wanting to go it straight, join the Imperial Navy, and it all go pear shaped?

Also: everyone read the books.

Chewie's 100% in this which is why I'm legit excited about the film. I don't think I need to see the Han/Chewie origin story, would much rather that they just rocked up, already a pair. If you must show then have it in flashback only.

But Civil War's fucking brilliant!

I think once "Young Bobba Fett" adventures kicks in, I'm going to have to largely ignore all of the reintroduction of over-rinsing the series and just stick to the core. I did the same with the largely dreadful Clone Wars series (although the original animated series, not the CGI bollocks, was actually rather good).

If its live action though, never write it off before seeing it. As for the re-casting, well if the same casting team that worked on the recent Star Trek worked on this, then I have every confidence. I think Star Treks core 3 of Kirk, Spook and (especially) Bones absolutely nailed the essence of their characters.

Looking at Wiki, I notice there is a as-yet announced 3rd anthology film planned for 2020. I'll piss myself if it ends up being "Young Bobba Fett", whilst holding my head in my hands and hiding from it.

I'm sure it is if you're into that sort of thing, but to me those films aren't any deeper than an excuse to see a bunch of people punching each other. Star Wars has alway strived to be more than an excuse to see a familiar character work their way through a string of action scenes.

If you think Star Wars is some sort of thinking man's alternative to comic book movies I think you may need to go back and watch The Phantom Menace again.

STRIVED mate. Strived. Not always succeeded no. Anyway we all know people don't mean the prequels when they talk about liking star wars.
