Games that make you laugh

And I mean really laugh out loud, even if you are on your own.

I grabbed Saints Row IV in the PSN sale, and though I am right at the beginning, it's the first game that has made me laugh in ages. I'm only at the bit where your character has been grabbed and placed in a strange environment (don't want to spoil it), but I have had more laughs than with most other games in about 30 minutes of play. And it seems to have lost the nasty undertone of the 3rd game.

So it got me thinking about games that are genuinely funny. I was recently replaying the N64 version of Conker, another genuinely funny game. But aside from those, the Portal games and the original Sam & Max I am struggling to come up with other titles.

The reason I like these games is that they help me unwind. I'm divorced and have 2 boys, 12 and 9, who I see a lot but I always get a low mood when they leave mine (such as last night). Now add in the fact that I have an alcohol problem (under control thanks to rehab for the first 6 months of this year) and I used to use that to perk me up, and these games are the perfect tonic for me. I couldn't play some of them with the boys, but they let me escape and put me in a good mood. The boys are games mad and I share the things that I find with them so they get the same experiences I do (they both played Dr. Langestov last week, and thought it was a nice little diversion), but it's nice for me to have something that is just for me.

So, is there anything else out there that is genuinely funny?

Wario Ware has a surreal kind of humour that I really enjoy; the win/lose conditions have an eye for comic timing and the bizarre nature of certain tasks gives it a unique humourous vibe of its own. The home console games have multiplayer stuff too, so you can enjoy them with company. :D

Not entirely related, but casual Street Fighter lobbies with forum folk can be pretty funny when we're using random select and forgetting moves and generally messing everything up. I expect this applies to other casual multiplayer games like Smash and MK8. :)

The Uncharted games are pretty funny in places. The banter between Sully and Nate is endearing like a 90's buddy movie.

South Park is genuinely hilarious.

Alien Isolation made me laugh out of sheer terror and nervousness so that must count for something

Edit: I'm watching the mrs play Lego Jurassic Park and some of those cut scenes with the dinosaurs are brilliant

The Lego games are mostly hilarious. I think you've our very own Derek Doctors to thank. Lego City Undercover on the Wii U is a comedy classic.

The pig in Jurassic World is incredible, popping up in so many scenes, in the background.

Tales from the Borderlands is easily one of the funniest games I've played. They've managed to avoid what usually trips these sorts of games up. Timing. There wasn't a single time a joke was ruined by a mid sentence load or lag.

There's a gun battle in that game that just makes me laugh every time I watch it.

Bioware games have their moments, there's a great moment in Dragon Age Inquisition involving Varric's dreadful romance novels.

My sides.

Oh, wrong thread…

Kid Icarus Uprising, although it's mostly in-jokes that are probably only funny to people having waited more than 20 years for a sequel. Still, it's delicious fourth-wall breaking stuff, so I genuinely got some laughs out of it.

Ben There, Dan That and Time Gentlemen Please surpass even the lucasarts games they're paying homage to. And they're always like 80p or something.

Yep, they're excellent games and genuinely funny. Plus the Devs are great guys, too. I remember donating £50 as their games had helped me through a bad bout of depression, and received an email saying 'Are you sure? This is rather a lot of money!' No less than you deserved, chaps.

Going to grab these when I have a couple of quid free, they are on steam for £2 at the moment for the pair! Cheers.

Comedy in games is rare. I might get a chuckle or two in some games but to play a game and laugh out all the way through is something that I don't get often, with maybe the exception of unintentional online shenanigans.

The Secret of Monkey Island. Genuine "laugh out loud" moments that I never expected when playing a game. I particularly remember being in hysterics over the whole mutiny scene. I haven't played them all but generally LucasArts (RIP) are good when it comes to comedy in games. I'll be grabbing Day of the Tentacle when it comes to PS4.

South Park: The Stick of Truth. Pretty much like the show. In fact, I think the game was more funnier than South Park in recent years and definitely one of the funniest games I've ever played. They built the humour around a video game as well as retaining what makes South Park funny. It helps when the creators of the show are heavily involved.

The Witcher 3 had some really funny moments. Being teleported into the ocean, the dwarf that slips and breaks his neck, and the drinking quest at Kaer Morhen. The latter one is good, since it goes on for a bit and I think you can end it early, or just keep going along (which I did.)

Asura's Wrath made me giggle with its absurd story and overblown violence. The giant finger from space, especially. Apart from that, not much.

Actually, I spoke too soon! I spent the afternoon playing Chariot on xbone, couch co-op. Brilliant game, and much hilarity ensued. It's like a videogame version of that piano thing that Laurel & Hardy did, only funny.
