It you go out there and suggest they’ve been fleeced you’ll be torn limb from limb though. Dissent is pretty mercilessly crushed on the forums and Reddit so all that’s left are the people who believe that it’s already better than any other game made since Wing Commander.

I suspect that most of the fan base don’t play very much else.

of course they do. That’s the current meta.

Selling something that doesn't quite exist? So most of their money didn't really fall under crowd funding. It's selling ships for the game that doesn't exist. Is that different from when Virgin Galactic or Blue Origin started selling tickets to go to space? Years later both have managed to fly just once to put their billionaire owners into space and gone a bit quiet. Virgin in particular still seem to be in a shaky position w.r.t. to delivering people thier trips.

Blue Origin have flown six crewed flights so far, but you're right about Virgin.

Has anyone told Chris Roberts about NFT's yet?

He doesn't need them.

Associating with NFTs introduces risk that if (when) those are firmly laughed off the stage that the mask on Star Citizen slips for at least some of their investors/players*/suckers.

As it stands he can release ship top trump pages every month or two and the money rolls in as people all buy a future for the ship in the game.

I still can't believe people are buying into this. You'd have to be a proper thick-as-fuck fucking cunt.

Also, such a shame that this is from the same guys who gave me so many good gaming memories from the Wing Commander games.

This has kept me entertained for years! I hope it never ends 🤣

Me toooooooooooooooooo.

But it's been a whole lot less entertaining since CIG realised that giving any dates, promises, specifications or targets for anything was making them look stupid as they're singularly unable to achieve a single damned thing they set out to do and just shut their mouths. The whole "Roadmap Noise" incident was the last truly spectacular one and that was a while back.

I definitely don't have the patience to play a game like this, but I gotta say it does look pretty cool in that video.  If it was free to play I'd try it out to mess around with for a few hours.

They did a free to play weekend recently so best to keep an eye out if you ever want to give it a go.

Are there any estimates on how many mugs they've roped into this? I suppose particularly how many 'investors' have put in more than, say, some amount equivalent to a premium digital edition of a game - like $100 or something.

I'm not making a case that it's all fine, but I'm also not going to get very emotional about it when all of those people knew, or should have known, that it was always a risky venture - you are literally paying for something that you are being explicitly told doesn't yet exist - and they've sort of got half a game out of it at this point, if you squint a bit. For people that haven't sunk dramatically more money into it than that, you could even - very charitably to the developers - look at it as No Man's Sky all over again, just over a much longer - admittedly, possibly infinite - timescale.

I done it. Finally bought it, or "backed it". A few YouTube videos convinced me it's worth a go and I think in it's current state, it certainly is worth a go.

Having played a couple of hours, I have to admit it feels like a game that is far from finished as it feels clunky and I had to drop the graphics settings down a bit to make it smoother which surprised me but thinking about it, it's a game that's been i development for so long I cant imagine it being refined under the hood. I also think they've got their priorities wrong. There's so many ships! So much stuff you can buy and they've put a lot of effort into the ships and nice things to look at when perhaps if they put the same effort into the "game" it may well be more further along by now and work a bit better. Never mind the bugs, as long as there's 1000 ships! It all looks quite nice other than the glitches and I can see it's a very different game than say, elite or no mans sky. (though I think elite is still superior in ship stuff)

The first thing I liked immediately was the waking up, heading to your ship and taking off. I wish it was all bit more streamlined but so far I'm enjoying it.

They can sell ships. This keeps the gravy train rolling.

They basically have no choice now if they want to continue to make money from this. Most people who haven't bought this now won't ever. Regardless of whether it's good in the end it can probably never be good enough to convince most who have sat by and laughed at it and its customers investors. So to continue to make money from people they mostly make and market ships rather than concentrating on the core game.

So it's either that or choose to ditch it or rubber stamp it and say it's done.

Yes, I think that's what I picked up on loud and clear. I'll get my money's worth out of it though, but I don't plan on sinking any more money into it. I've heard they reset your credit balance now and again as well which seems harsh, though as it's still in development I do understand but I also see it as a way to get you to spend more real cash on it. I guess those who are invested in it are all the way. It's a shame because it's a great concept and there is a good game there to play but as you said, it's too late now for it to be anything else.

Alpha/beta account wipes seem fair, totally used to that sort of thing. But losing money you've paid for? Brazen robbery.

Is that something they've done? Are they wiping anything anyone actually paid for? I.e. can you buy in game currency and have it wiped out?

I've no idea sorry, I was just commenting based on the post above mine.

I was having a read earlier and the in-game money doesn't seem to be real world money funded. Everyone gets to keep anything they've bought with real money, like ships etc.

It sounds like Escape From Tarkov where they wipe all progress and start again.

Stumbled across a YT channel and it does look like this could be quite fun with other people who are into how janky it is

I’ve only watched the first one, but it looks great!

Yeah I assume they've had to set up the pvp bits rather than stumbling into other players naturally but it still looks like good fun. You can sort of see from those videos how it'd be an amazing game if it was ever actually released and got to MMO numbers of players
