I've just finished Steam World Dig 2 after buying it in the Christmas sale. It took me about 13 hours, which was longer than I was expecting, but I spent a few hours backtracking, looking for secrets; I managed to get all but 1 of the artifacts without a guide, which was satisfying. I had a go at the trials as well but got fed up after dying three times in a row and couldn't be bothered after that - the controls are just a little too loose for me to persist with the precision platforming.

Overall, despite a few misgivings initially, I thought it was a very good little game. Digging, exploring the map and looking for secrets is all very relaxing, and the puzzles were challenging enough to be satisfying once you'd completed them but not so difficult as to be frustrating - just right, in other words. It has a lot in common with the Metroidvania genre, but the relative lack of combat and the way you have to, quite literally, carve your own path through the map as opposed to progressing through discrete linear 'rooms' gives it a different feel, especially when compared with something like Gucamelee, which I played last year. The risk/reward mechanic where pushing on nets you more rewards but dying causes you to lose them was also quite Souls-like, I thought; the tubes that return you to the town are very bonfire-ish, and the sense of relief you feel when the icon for a new one pops up on the map is similar to Souls as well (although, admittedly, on a lesser scale).

Four stars from me - definitely recommended :)

I'm not sure what to play now. I've got Breath of the Wild on the shelf in its shrink wrap still, but I rinsed it less than a year ago on the Wii U, and as mind-bendingly brilliant as it is, I feel like I want to forget it a bit more before I launch back in again. MK8 is also on the shelf, but it's another one I played to death on the Wii U, and I know that once I start playing it I won't be able to eject it again until I've got three star gold on every single tournament. That leaves Stardew Valley, which I've yet to play, but which I understand is the gaming equivalent of crack cocaine. Hmm.

Complaining that the console didn't have any decent exclusives at launch feels like moving the goalposts, if anything. For the first time in decades Nintendo supplied a steady stream of games for the full year, both exclusive and remastered, to be played on their latest platform. Compare that to the Wii U, 3DS, Wii and the DS launches and that's a massive turn around for them. All of those platforms had exclusive titles at launch and a massive drought period afterwards, to the degree where it became a meme in their fanbase.

If exclusives at launch are what I've got to sacrifice to get a decent line-up for the full year, then frankly I'll take it. Having to wait 3 to 6 months before the next game from the platform holder comes out isn't acceptable in a launch year.

Gorogoa is...interesting. I haven't completely figured what I should be doing yet, but I only managed 20 minutes with it this morning. I'll give it a few hours over the weekend.

Be super aware it's very short. I was quite happy with it (particularly at the South African price - shame my card doesn't work in Mexico), but think I might have felt different if I didn't already understand it would be over in a couple of hours.

Golf Story is one I really can't wait to get to, but it is still somewhat down the list of titles to pick up, especially as it is a case of one main game at a time before buying another.

I am currently working my way through Battle Chef Brigade, which is absolutely stunning, it has visuals that feel inspired from Studio Ghibli a story that so far feels lovely and somewhat grounded and manages to do something I no longer thought possible...It has made the Match-3 genre feel fresh. It is certainly one that is making a late charge to the top of my GotY list.

You'll have it finished in that time - it's only a couple of hours long.

Yep, I think I'm gonna take the plunge with Stardew. Any beginner tips that aren't obvious?

It doesn't really matter, but some things I wished I'd done:

1) Keep at least one of each item. You never know when someone will want one, or you need it for something, or you want it for the Community Centre.

2) Don't do what I did and leave all the making friends stuff until later. It takes aaaaaaages. Talk to people and give them stuff they like all the time.

3) When you need to upgrade your watering can, make sure you check the weather report to ensure it'll rain the following day.

Also, mayonnaise is a great way to make money early on, so get a coop, some chickens and a mayonnaise machine or two ASAP.

I'd love a proper Animal Crossing game, without the IAP focus of Pocket Camp. My daughter loves the Pocket Camp world, but the leaf ticket economy is a bit depressing. The new assets they've made for it would work fine for a Switch game, though.

Kirby Star Allies is due this year, I'd imagine we'll hear more about that at any direct, and probably Yoshi too. Not sure we'll get Metroid or a proper Fire Emblem yet. Big third-party wise, I'd imagine Project Octopath Traveller might get a proper name and a release date, and Lost Sphear is out next month.

But I'm in no rush, I still have Mario + Rabbids and Xenoblade 2 to finish, Zelda & I Am Setsuna as yet untouched, and ARMS and Mario Odyssey to pick up at some point. Fantastic catalogue.

I looked at Battle Chef Brigade but can't get past the visuals and animation, it screams flash game to me.

I quite liked puzzle quest in the past though so would enjoy something similar. I saw iron cast on the eShop, anyone played that?

I got Ironcast in the Xmas sale and it's pretty good though as a roguelike the structure is quite repetitive as you essentially complete the same missions. Missions in any single run are random but you do get the same ones cropping up quite often.

Looks like a simple match 3 but there's quite a bit of strategy to it; different matches give you boost to either mech damage, shields and coolant so you need to balance matches to generate sufficient resource to attack or defend on your turn.

It's certainly an original setup and I liked the setting and Britishness of the story so couldn't go wrong for £9

Battle Chef is far from a flash game... if you have any interest in Match 3 then you should get it.

Ironcast is a roguelike match 3 that has more in common with Dungeon Raid than actual match 3. I enjoyed it on PC and again gave it a bit of time on PS4, would have loved it on Vita, but it wasn't to be, but could be an ideal fit on the Switch© because of the nature of how missions are played out.

Actually both are very good examples of taking a tired format and doing something good with it.

I don't reckon we'll see Metroid released this year.

However, according to a website post from Nintendo's Norway branch, these games are scheduled for release this year:

The year 2017 has definitely been Nintendo’s year and we are looking forward to 2018, which will include new games like Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4 and Kirby: Star Allies as well as many other games that we will reveal during the year.
