Well my resolve has just cracked and I have finally ordered a switch from Very. Should be with me Friday at the latest so I'm going to book that off work. Whoop! Already got Zelda on the Wii U so will just be getting Mario for now.

I'm sure this has been asked and answered a million times already (but it is a big thread so I've not been through it all yet) but what are the essential extras that might be needed? For instance, is a screen protector essential and if so is there one that is considered the best? What about carry cases, memory cards, charging things. Any must have items that are not games? I remember reading , back when the screen was released, reading about the dock scratching the screen. Is that still a thing? If so, is there anything to buy to protect the screen from this? Scratches scare me!

I've never played Binding Of Issac before, but it looks good from the little videos I've seen. So... should I get that or Enter The Gungeon next?

Isaac is a bit more forgiving and will have you see the ending at least a few times in quick succession.

Gungeon looks more charming but leans a lot more towards being a bullet hell shooter which makes it rather difficult in later stages. I've played it for about 25 hours and only reached the final boss twice, I think.

Whatever you do, make sure you get both. :P

Spare USB C lead and adaptor for charging while away from the dock (if you don’t already have one) and you’re golden really.

Spotted this elsewhere but just wanted to point out how fucking good Switch's box art has been:

The only good art in that Wii U line up is the Game & Wario one.

Did Nintendo not release a first party Wii U game between November and June? That's quite the lull.

Lego City Undercover was Nintendo published, but not 1st party.

THE LEGENDS WERE COMING BUT DIDN'T FOR AGES AND THEN SOME DIDN'T ANYWAY.

Not that this needs saying at all, but I was skeptical about starting yet another Zelda. I felt really worn to the series after never bothering to finish Skyward Sword or Twilight Princess. The thought of playing through all those dungeons with overly familiar themes and slowly collecting the clichéd weapons bored me, to be honest. But Breath of the Wild has won me over ten-fold. I absolutely adore it. It's different in structure to other Zelda games, almost not a traditional Zelda game at all. The sheer sense of adventure is fantastic. If anyone's at all on the fence about it having recently got a Switch, I can't recommend trying it enough.

I'm unwrapping my Switch on Christmas Day and then immediately heading off for a long flight that evening.  My wife got me a Mario Odyssey bundle, so I plan to get Zelda to go with it.  I see an Explorer Edition mentioned elsewhere, but that doesn't seem to be available in the UK?  Is there a best edition to get here, physical/ digital or bundles with the DLC, or is it all the same?

Explorer Edition comes with a guide book but no DLC and is US only so you'd have to import it.

Personally I'd just get the normal version, physical or digital whatever your preference and get the DLC later on when you're ready. You don't need it until you've completed the game really.

Ok, so bought Binding of Isaac earlier and played for about an hour.

I think im missing something. It just seems utterly... shit. Really hard, seemingly unfairly so, the gameplay is basic and dull, the controls are loose. Am I missing something? Does it get better the more you play it? I’m genuinely gutted I’ve spent £35 on something this bog standard.

I felt like that for about five hours, frankly. Then I put 300 more in over about four months and it's by some distance my GOTY, one of the most rewarding games I've ever played in my life.

The more you play, the more you unlock, meaning that every future run has more variables at play. You'll also come to understand the beautifully balanced risk/reward of gambling when to use each key and bomb to try to find secrets and power ups and so on and so on. It's a game at its very worst in the opening few hours, but I don't see any way around that. Once you build a bit of momentum, though, and get a decent run, you'll get it. Some people have put the thousands of hours into it.

It really is shit. I also paid £35 for it 6 months ago. Send it back, that's what I did.

I'm not going to downvote you but consider yourself downvoted, psychologically. Also, I hope you get a lump of coal this year, which is even more than you deserve. And I mean for your Christmas dinner.

 thanks

In all seriousness I don’t see why anyone would continue to play a game they don’t like in the hope that it might eventually click. There are so many other things to capture your interest these days.

pretty much my opinion when I got it in an xbox sale - one of those games a few people get obsessed with and they think everybody is going to love as much as them.

my one word review of it would also be 'shit'
