My sons have been saving up for a Switch these last few months and we finally hit the total the other day - it's now ordered! It's the first new console we've bought since the early days of the Wii. I've ordered two extra joycons so we can have four-player Mario Kart, but given I've also bought Zelda, am I going to need a Pro Controller or will the joycon grip suffice? My hands are small-to-medium, and I doubt I'll be able to play for more than an hour or two at a time. £60 could instead be spent on another game or perhaps some joycon wheels.

It's a great controller, but stick with the joycons for a while, see if you get on with the grip. I find that too small for my gorilla hands.

Right, so now I have to buy a switch for the kids for Christmas!

Where's cheapest to get one and a couple of games? I think I can get the console for £270 from toys R Us, they'd probably like Mario kart and splatoon 2 but haven't seen any bundles with those in. Best just buying separately?

This is not exactly the bargain of the century, but the Xenoblade Pro Controller (which I hear has a better d-pad or something?) is £53 from Shopto Ebay here

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/173003583642

I've seen the regular version get that cheap a few times but not the special edition. Meh.

Looks like the same price on their proper website: https://www.shopto.net/nintendo/switch/SWAC58-switch-pro-controller-xenoblade-edition

Might buy that...

Unfortunately timely because I think my launch day Pro controller is starting to show signs of wear and tear on the left analogue stick and sound a little creaky.

This generation's controllers have been the least durable. I've been through four PS4 controllers (and not just the infamously awful launch ones), my OG Xbox One controller quickly developed a loose analogue stick, and now this. Never until this gen have I had to replace a single controller. Amazon customers tell me that the posh Elite Xbox controller I recently bought won't last long either. All things considered, I have to place the blame on Rocket League.

I know but they just never seemed worth the materials. Can't remember what I was using batteries for but I was hoarding them for something.

I'll start working on it the next time I fire it up.

I've got iridium and batteries coming out of my ears. I get at least three iridium every day!

You can pick up the console with the Mario and Rabbids game for £279 at Tesco right now. Mario Kart and Splatoon have held their value pretty well - the Trading forum is probably your best bet for now.

Didn't see this in the FAQ so does anyone have any recommendations on battery packs? There's loads on Amazon and I'm torn between a smaller 10000 mAh one and a 20000 beastie, both made by Anker. I don't travel much so it's more of a "just in case" thing to have.

Re: the Pro controller, I have it and it's definitely nice to use, but I had no real issues with the joycon grip. The main difference is the size and feel of the ABXY buttons. The Pro's are larger and less clicky, which I prefer. Having said that, I prefer the shape and location of the +- buttons on the joycons. I got my Pro controller from CEX by trading some stuff in, I wouldn't have paid for it though.

I put 120 hours plus into Zelda, played maybe 80%+ of Mario, a fair bit of Splatoon, Arms, Binding of Isaac, MK8 etc...  I've never had a Pro and don't really feel the need.

I use the joycons separately, without the dog face grip thing, and without the additional black slide on things to make them slightly wider.

I have probably medium sized hands I guess.

I did just pick up an 8bitdo SF30 Pro though and it's nice to use as a change, bit cheaper than the Pro.

Finally, I also have the official wheels. They are too small / feel awkward to my adult hands (but my 3 year old holds then well!).  I believe you get cheaper non official ones that are better due to being larger.

Oh my god at the drab greyness of those.

You'll be pleased to know I ordered neon joycons all round: blue, red, green and pink.

@dood @Freeman Of course, I forgot you can have them in separate hands - that sounds good to me. I don't like the steering wheel addons myself, but my youngest two like them on the Wii. Might get them to try one out before we buy.

Cheers - unfortunately the Tesco offer only applies to the grey version, not the neon, which is frustrating as it's clearly the best offer around that I can find. Bum. Could always get some cheap skins for the grey controllers I suppose...

The Switch knows what colours the joycons are and will display them on screen for player order, etc. Rabbids is rather ace, mind.

I have the same setup! The Green and Pink are very nice. The red is the weakest of the set - it's a kind of pinkish red, but next to the hot pink of the pink it just looks neither here nor there. I think I'd rather have the stronger neon yellow from the ARMS controllers.
