What big games can we expect for 2018?

There probably going to be a Direct in January, but I would guess Animal Crossing, Smash Bros and a 2D Mario. Not including the stuff which has already been announced, of course.

Announced or released?

I think big franchises will be the Yoshi game (but it won't be a 'big' game), Fire Emblem potentially if it makes it into the January direct in a more complete form, a Kingdom Hearts collection plus a surprise KH3 announcement and Wii HD classics on the eShop.

I think we'll get Metroid Prime 4 reannounced, the first look at whatever Retro is working on (I feel like it's going to be a brand new IP that'll try and directly compete with the PS4), new Smash Bros (I think the time for a Wii U part has passed) and if we get a concrete date for SMTV, I could see a tease for either Persona 5 Crimson for Switch or a new Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

I think more third parties will look at the Switch as a platform they can re-release titles on, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the likes of GTAV, MGS and Mass Effect (the original, not Andromeda) getting ports.

All pure speculation on my part.

More indie game conversions.

More Wii U semi-conversions/updates.

Some sequels to 3DS games, cementing the Switch as the 3DS's de facto successor.

Something Pokémon, most likely a side-series games.

A new Nintendo franchise that might reach the levels of success achieved by Splatoon.

No Donkey Kong, Star Fox, Metroid, F-Zero, etc. Those franchises are defunct.

Well they already announced a Metroid, and Donkey Kong sold pretty well all told (and popped up in Mario to keep him in the public eye) - so you're wrong with at least two of those. I'd bet VN1X's other bollock on it.

Has anybody sent their Switch for repair due to the screen coming out of the console? The bezel on mine is protruding a little on the bottom right corner. I can push it back in, but eventually it comes back out. Seems like a common issue.

I've noticed this happening on mine too. It's not causing any major issues at the moment so I'm reluctant to send it off for fear of it coming back in a worse state (like my old iMac with a dodgy screen that came back with dust behind the screen itself, the bastards).

So it's realistic to expect it'll match the Wii U's lifetime sales (around 13m) in a year? Blimey.

They hit 10 million at roughly the same pace as the ps4. By the end of the financial year/ full year of release, we should see it around 14 to 15 million (they are currently doing well over 100,000 a week in Japan alone).  Also looks like Mario has sold in excess of 5 million so that's a great result.

Pinball FX3 is out - for free with Sorcerer's Lair as usual. I won't be buying tables yet again, but a pack of two other tables are free right now if you look on the store page. I'm a bit disappointed that the docked resolution doesn't look any better than 720p... maybe 900p at most. This game should work on a toaster. I'd have expected it to be 1080p capable. Is this common?

Strangely enough, in 2 weeks of owning a Switch this is the first time I tried a 3D game! I've spent the last 2 weeks playing pixel-art games - mostly Binding of Isaac - so I didn't think about the Switch's graphical capabilities. Two weeks without even knowing there's a fan and it gets warm!

So now I'm actually starting Mario Odyssey - god knows why Isaac was more of a priority - and I noticed that Mario doesn't come close to 1080p docked either. It looks like it's doing something dynamic between 720 and 900p - I'll turn to look at something and it's really pixellated 720p, then I'll spin the camera a couple of times and the same geometry edges are a nicer 900p. Huh.

Yeah I'm counting pixels when I'm supposed to be playing the Best Game Ever.

You don't both keep it docked in a warm cupboard do you? Wonder if it could be related to heat undoing the adhesive?

Some more on Pinball FX3:

It's great that you can change to vertical mode with a single button, especially to use the length of the Switch's screen in handheld mode. If you do so, it's better to detach the joycons and control the game with the touchscreen. In fact it's pretty annoying to play with the joycons because the constant rumble (HD rumble?) just makes the whole Switch buzz annoyingly. The rumble is pretty cool with a pro controller though.

Technically: Handheld mode seems to be 30fps, which isn't really good enough for pinball. Docked is thankfully 60fps but less than 1080p. As I said, this game shouldn't be technically very demanding, I'd expect it to run on anything.

Mario has a dynamic resolution that goes from 720p to 900p but stays around 810p most of the time. Obviously, it does this to maintain it's 60fps target.

Whoever initially recommended Vostok Inc, you’re a bastard.

Haven't put it down all evening.

Same here. I'm into the second system now (the boss in that one is a step up). I like the different unlock criteria for the buildings. The 3333 asteroids one looked like it was going to take ages but then I got that second weapon :)
