As an aside, looking around for games for this thing and all seem to still be north of £45, which is kind of a good thing, as I won't just pick any up for the sake of it. But I do want to get something else for Lucas to go with what he is getting on Christmas...

 

He will have Super Mario Odyssey and Rocket League. 

So was thinking one of:

Splatoon 2

Mario Kart 8
Super Bomberman R

Which would be the best?

So this pad came last week (just in time for Xenoblade).

It’s not half bad I tell thee! Plastics are cheap but the sticks are nice in terms of feel and response, buttons are not bad and it feels way more comfortable than the joy cons. A solid 6/10 and a very passable alternative to dropping silly money on a pro.

MK8 is probably the best of both worlds - good local multiplayer and good online. Splatoon 2 is online only for multi, I think.

 

As for Bomberman R it's just not very good fantastic, buy my copy off eBay.

How old is he? Has he played MK previously?

 

He's 11... We played a little of MK8 on the Wii U but not much. He enjoyed the DS version when he had that. 

 

Edit: Cheers guys, will toss a coin between the two then when I come to buying.

Yeah, Splatoon is a great game - should be second - but MK is a better all-rounder, especially at a family XMas where local multiplayer comes into its own.

 

You can get cheap steering wheel-shaped Joycon holders as well.

Yeah, you know you'll have to get both at some point. I much prefer Splatoon 2, but hand on heart, if you had to choose just one?

 

On the other hand, if he has it on WiiU and DS, get Splatoon.

The £25 Wii U card I bought a few weeks ago worked fine. If you buy from cdkeys you can take advantage of the 5% discount code on their Facebook page, as well as 1% Quidco cashback.

Also if you pay with apple pay you get 5% off.
