Got him one from Smyths which was £309 with Mario Odyssey. I assume like any other modern console, I'll want to get it out and update it before Christmas so he can actually use the thing when he opens it? You might want to set up a Nintendo account on it before hand, but the good news is that it doesn't take that long. Updates are all minuscule and take seconds, including the restart, and there is a clear 'start game' button so you can skip them (and obviously no online play if you do that). So, in short. Up to you, but not really. A box fresh Switch will be plugged in, updated and ready to go in about 30 minutes max I'd say, and that's including messing about with tidying cables etc. It's not an Xbox / PS where you need to sit it overnight pulling down a new firmware at 1.5GB before a 16GB update for each and every game...
bradigor
Great, thanks for that. Can I set up an account away from the console ahead of time? Then just sign in on the day?

All the updates on the Switch have been incredibly fast. No harm though, and you can get it on the wi-fi etc, as well. I'd also recommend the Parental Controls phone app, lets you set playtime limits, hard cut-off times on a per-day basis, or just track playtimes. I use it to make myself behave! 5 minutes ago, Freeman said: Great use of the neon joycon colouring in the on screen directions, clearly displaying that mortgage grey should be restricted to greystations, and apparently skirts. Amen to that. I love the fact that the Switch knows what colour it's joy-cons are. A bit of an argument against custom shells, TBH.

Nintendo Wii games to be published on a third party platform in China: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-42251424 Looks like they are experimenting with streaming, with updated assets. Spacehost
It's definitely running in a native emulator, according to people who should know this stuff, so expect some sweet GC/ Wii Virtual Console stuff.

I'm also more inclined to believe it as a cross-platform remaster, too. Fuck it, I'd believe absolutely anything to feed that flickering flame.
