At what point did all Switch games suddenly have to be playable in 'short bursts'? I've certainly played 'long bursts' of Zelda, Mario, Splatoon etc. I think there is plenty of room for games at both ends of the spectrum.

The Switch can be used as a handheld, but it's not 100% one - and I'd hate it if everyone started developing with that mentality.

That's totally the magic of the Switch over something like the Vita, or even the 3DS really - it's not 100% a handheld. It's a full home console that can also be used as a portable device, with the exact same controls available. Sure, you can have short handheld experiences on it, but in combination with it's Sleep Mode function, it's great that you can be playing a "full" console game on your telly, then take it with you to do a little extra on the train to work, or take it with you on holiday and stuff.

I think the Switch is genuinely amazing. I have a Core i7, GTX 1080 equipped gaming PC at home and yet my Switch is the only thing I ever play on anymore. I'm actually further into both Doom and Skyrim on the Switch than I ever got on my PC.

So with the Splatoon download teasing me, what do people recommend for someone who's never played it ? Straight into online or play a bit of single player ? Also has online got any sort of levelling up where by you can buy / unlock better gear ? Is there plenty of stuff to unlock / buy ?

Like @CheekyLee said, do the intro and a bit of the single-player campaign first, until you're comfortable dipping in and out of ink, jumping in both kid and squid forms, and jumping out of ink and shooting. Basic movement and tracking/shooting skills.

Couple of people found the SP confusing - you need to find invisible 'tea-kettles' and cover them with ink to make them appear. Then you can jump into that level. Each level introduces new mechanics, skills or weapons. You might need to climb and jump about the single-player hub world a little to find them all. There's a large tea-kettle that's fenced off that you won't be able to reach until you finish all the other levels within that first hub world. That's the boss for that hub - beat that, and you'll be able to leap to the next hub world.

Most of us recommend using motion controls on max sensitivity.

There's loads of gear - some restricted by level. But the low level weaponry is fine through most of the game - many people just use the Splattershot throughout (some even the base Jr you start with). You get points for inking (more ink, the more P) with a bonus for winning; all gear is bought with those points - no IAPs, no spending real money. But much of the later weaponry is just remixes of the base weapon plus different secondary and special weapons, to suit different play styles or environments.

Recommendation is to try out a few base types to see what suits you.

You also buy 'gear' in the form of clothing that gives you buffs - one main buff slot and up to three sub-slots. Cheaper gear is 1-star with only one sub-slot, more expensive is 3-star with three sub-slots. There is a way to upgrade 1-star gear to have three sub-slots, too, so don't spend all your dosh on 3-star gear.

Some buffs are special and only found in one class of gear as a main slot - ninja squid, drop roller, opening and closing gambit (and some more, I think).

Any recommendations oa cheap case and a cheap 3rd party controller (can be wired). While I'd like a Pro Controller - I want to be able to play 3 player MK with the kids and that isn't getting purchased if I have to pay £60 on a controller?

Also - Black Friday Switch was supposed to be being delivered tomorrow by Amazon - which was perfect, but is now out for delivery today - except no-one is home!!!

Fantastic post, thanks ever so much for your help. I went straight into multiplayer, won the first match and was the top player so hopefully it will all come fairly naturally,

One thing I did have to do though was turn off the motion controls, I was laying on the seatee at the time and it was just impossible to tilt and still see the screen, much preferred with it off

I've played long bursts of Zelda and Mario too. But they're also very well designed to the point where you can equally enjoy them in short bursts due to the way objectives are structured. In fact that's been the case for all Nintendo games on the platform so far.

You just normally get people in here going 'oh, game series X would be perfect for the Switch' but the Souls series is just about the least perfect series for the Switch I can imagine out of all the big console games. Given how unsuitable it is for pick up and play or short bursts of gaming, there would be no real benefit porting it to the Switch except to hit the small number of players who really wanted to try it out over the course of the past decade but didn't own a suitable machine, a market I imagine must be tiny at this stage.

Turn them back on (and whack the sensitivity up at least a few notches). Honestly. Once you get used to it, you'll wonder why you'd want it any other way. They are miles better. Trust us.

Never really got the mobile = short bursts thing.   Long form RPGs have always been a staple of mobile games.  The fact you can play for hours without hogging the TV is probably a good reason for that.  And with the sleep functionality of modern machines you can stop and start with no fuss whatever style of game you're playing.

I dunno about the Souls games being unsuited for burst gaming, to be honest. Diving in for 'one more go at the boss' or getting another token of this or that, or upgrading my weapon by this much is basically the gameplay loop. Bonfire to bonfire it *is* essentially short bursts.

What nonsense. One massive benefit would be all the extra available time people might be able to play it for a start. Just look at Skyrim for example - how is being able to play at home, then just carry on on a plane/bus etc not a benefit? It's clear that people are finding more time to game this way.

Seriously, this is utterly the best thing about the Switch. It takes longer for my TV to turn on than it does to get right back to wherever the hell I was in the game I was playing. I rarely see title screens for whatever game I happen to be playing, because there's so rarely a need to exit, save, etc. Just tap the button when you reach your station, put the console to Sleep, continue when you get back in your house.

I've never been told I can't do something because it needs an update. I've never sat and waited for a game to finish "Checking additional content" before it deigns to let me play. I've never been told I need to be online for the game to even load in the first place. The console is designed to let you play NOW, and this in particular is why I love it.

Just bought Yakuza 0. Tried to use the PS4 sleep function but it fucked up and lost me half and hours play time.

I've totally come round to wanting everything on switch. I play in handheld most of the time so I really don't care about the sick graphixxx

Ah, I only play it on the TV, so yeah, I can see that might be the case for handheld play.

But what about playing it on the TV, is it unsuitable for that too, or a bit of both?

I think it's perfect for the Switch just because it's excellent and I like playing excellent games any way I want to:)

Absolutely. My most played game of the year is Persona 4 on Vita, purely because I can chew through a 100+ hour RPG on the train or on my lunch break or on the sofa with my headphones on. The Switch is practically built for big games like that. I really hope a Monster Hunter or Persona game come to it. The "play it on TV" bit is a nice bonus for a rainy Sunday afternoon.

I'd also be well up for a Souls game on Switch. I disagree with this whole idea that Switch games have to be things you can only play in short bursts, but even disregarding that I genuinely used to play Bloodborne in relatively short bursts anyway. It totally would be perfect for the Switch.

Rocket league is definitely my go to game if i have a spare 10-15 minutes.

Hell no, even after all this time, an intended 10-15 minute Rocket League session always ends up being over an hour long.

Arms is where it’s at for 15 minutes.

Yeah, motion controls are not great for handheld, you can adjust the sensitivity differently to docked so that you tilt it less but really, pro controller and docked with motion controls is the way to go. Completely fine to play with stick controls of course but I'm guessing ranked play (I'm not there yet either!) cranks up the difficulty as most players use motion controls.

I'm still a noob with Splatoon and was reticent about using them bit it's amazing how quickly you get used to it. Jumping to Zelda straight afterwards, i was wondering why I wasn't looking up.

Overall the game seems to have an infinite amount of content that I've not even scratched the surface of (I'm lvl 6) with games modes and various mods and stuff, but the beauty of it that it's easily playable and accessible (and an embarrassingly obscene amount of fun) from lvl1.

Don't forget to jump to the Splatoon thread and leave your Nintendo ID. Splatfest coming up which should be fun with fellow mukkers

The Souls games feel like they would be an odd fit for the Switch, they really don't lend themselves to short bursts of gaming. At all. I'd rather see FROM do something new if they're going to develop for the system.

It's the opposite of that - handheld devices are perfect for those massive games that take ages and ages and you want to sink weeks into.

I've got Demon Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2 and Bloodborne..

love them all... completed none of them, probably not even 1/3 way through any of them.  So yes, switch would be perfect for me.

This, a million time this. All the bollocks you have on the ps3/4 and 360/bone is atrocious - with the switch you just start gaming straight away

After a lengthy chat with Amazon they've informed me that my Prime account and Prime NOW accounts are two separate accounts (accessed via the same email address and password) and thus they can't/won't apply the same discount to Super Mario Odyssey on regular old Amazon for me to get it that way.

In the end they gave me a £5 discount instead of the £10 discount to use on the regular store and made it so that if I ever try to use PrimeNOW again they'll automatically apply a £10 discount to my next order.

So not a complete loss in the end and I've got Mario making its way to me for Thursday at a slight discount.
