I've been in this thread for a month or so now and not once has one of you mentioned Project Octopath Traveller. Fucking shame on you all! Just downloaded the demo.

That's because the demo came out months ago, and the actual game isn't due until sometime next year :)

The South Africa eShop option can't be overstated or repeated enough. If you're going digital, it's obligatory.

You will save approximately 20-25% on every digital purchase versus the UK store. I bought about eighty games this year via the UK eShop. I probably could have saved myself two to three hundred quid, the cost of the console.

Downloaded the demos of Snipperclips, Puyo Tetris and Project Octopath Traveller, the latter of which was a real surprise - I had no idea there was a demo.

Octopath was intriguing - it feels something in between a late SNES JPRG (e.g. FF6) and an early PSX one (e.g. Grandia). The voice acting is really annoying though, and the music was mixed so high during the intro that I had to strain to hear it. I’ve adjusted the balance now, so I should give it another go. Intrigued to see a Japanese voices option again.

I confess I haven’t been back to it since writing that, but I am firmly in Mario + Rabbids grip.

1. Set up a Nintendo account on the Nintendo website: https://accounts.nintendo.com

2. Set South Africa as country of residence.

3. Log into the Switch using the same account.

4. Go to the eShop on the Switch, prices should appear in Rand.

5. Use a UK debit or credit card to make purchases.

6. PROFIT (actually profit).

Losing my 100 hour Zelda save if I drop my switch or the thing just breaks is just a constant source of anxiety.

I agree about the save thing though, if they won't allow moving to sd card for fear of piracy then cloud saves is the obvious solution.

I’ve been given £15 eShop credit. What should I spend it on? Smaller titles as I’ll just get big titles from the SA store.

Got:

Garou

Snake Pass

FAST RMX

Snipperclips

Rogue Trooper

Bulb Boy

Shantae

Sonic Mania

Mr Shifty

Mighty Gunvolt Burst

Wonderboy

Metal Slug 3

Edit: Just watched the trailer for Serial Cleaner. Might wait for that — looks ace!

Can you just change the region on an already created account?

Yup. Go to accounts.nintendo.com and switch your region. When you boot the eShop, sign in again and accept the Ts & Cs, buy games, Switch region back again. No need for a new account.

Two kids in my class were discussing how they were hoping Father Christmas was going to bring them a switch.  I'm now the coolest teacher in school after I leaned in and instead of telling them off for talking said "me too, now do your work"

I then mocked them later because neither want Zelda or Mario. :o

Cheers, is there any reason to switch regions back? If everything's cheaper in SA, why would I return to the UK store?

Switch coming on Wednesday.

Plan is to mainly use it as a handheld. If the joy cons aren't attached - how long do they last before needing a charge.

I assume I can play with the joycons attached and it plugged in? But if the joycons are unnattached do I only get limited play time before it all has to be charged up? How does the charging grip work?

Sorry for the questions.

That doesn’t make sense if you can store games on the SD card.

From what I understand, by tightening up the system's SD access, not having save files being able to be read from the SD at all and forgoing a proper web browser Nintendo have pretty much eliminated all the standard points of attack.

I'm not sure if a way to back up / restore game saves without the possibility of the process being subverted / exploited by hackers in some form even exists.

I’m almost at breaking point with sending my switch back due to the absolutely shocking controller performance when I use it in the dock.

This was me last night trying to play Mario with my pro controller. I had multiple complete disconnects along with a host of missed button presses and Mario continuing to run for seconds after releasing the sticks.

Given my my last Nintendo support experience I’m super reluctant to do this. While they now have the data transfer function on the Switch, I don’t have any faith that they would do this correctly.

:(

Out of interest what games did they want?

My mate bought one on Friday, and on Saturday we were playing Mario Karts 8 together, via the magic of the internet and unlimited minutes.

First time we’ve done that since Mario Kart 64, which was the last time he owned a games console.
