Had a strange problem with my left joycon last night. It was attached to the console and worked fine in the menu but as soon as I started any game no buttons on it worked at all. Reattaching did nothing and the only solution was to register the controlllers again in the controller settings menu. Very strange!

Managed to put about an hour into Mantis Burn Racing and I’m cautiously optimistic about it - it nails the handling really well, the sliding and drifting is very easy to execute but feels like a nice layer of depth to it and your vehicles keep getting upgraded to be faster/handling etc.

Sound is horrible, both music and engine noises, but graphically quite pretty (if a little brown/dark)

Does feel like a lot of content in there with online and offline modes, and all the DLC from other versions.

Been a while since I’ve played a micro machines style game that feels as good as this, you don’t feel like you’r driving blind off the edge of the screen all the time and the price is low enough to take a punt - feels like the sort of thing that used to  be great for 1200 MS points in the good old days of X360 MS store.

I've taken a punt on that new Gear Club unlimited/Test Drive game. I'll report back once its delivered.

I'm tempted, it's probably the best one on mobile and of course the developers are responsible for my favourite game of all time.

Is the portable home console hybrid this going to be Nintendo's niche forever now then?

I can't see Sony trying to go after the Switch after the vita didn't really take off and they're probably making enough from PS4 to not really feel threatened.

I also can't see Microsoft getting into the portables market either, seems too far away from what they do best.

I think this is going to be their niche for a long time. Japan loves handhelds more while the West tends to favour home consoles. This kills two birds with one stone, allows them to pool their dev resources on one console, and it also allows them to duck out of the arms race for raw power. I really can't see them launching a dedicated home console for a long, long time, if ever. They struggled with that market for years apart from the Wii, for obvious reasons.

Nintendo have absolutely fucking smashed it. Imagine being any other developer and seeing Nintendo take you to school, releasing two of the greatest video games of all time within months of each other.

And with them on that kind of form, the promise of Metroid Prime 4 just around the corner...

@Timbuktu Hot UK Deals are claiming that you'll be able to get the Neon console + Mario Odyssey for £279.99 from 3pm on Amazon. Can't see anything on Amazon to indicate this but might be worth keeping an eye on.

cheers.  I wasn't really expecting big deals for the Switch to be honest, the thing sells well enough as is.

Is it just me who's hoping Prime 4 goes back to a lock-on approach like MP1 & 2, rather than just being a twin stick shooter?

Thought so.

Really keen to buy myself a Switch for Xmas but can’t decide if I want to go cartridge or download only. There’s 947 pages on this thread so I’m sure it’s been discussed but just wondering if anyone can give me their brief thoughts on what they prefer.

Looking to get Zelda, Battle Chasers Nightwar and maybe Mario.

I've gone digital. It costs more, but it's just ultra convenient having everything there ready to go without needing to carry/swap cartridges etc.

If you're the type the tends to buy games, play them, then trade them in for new ones then obviously physical is the way to go. But I never trade games in so sell-on value etc means nothing to me.

PS What's so special about Battle Chasers Nightwar that it's on the buy list ahead of Mario (and where's Splatoon 2 and Mario & Rabbids you loon!)? Genuinely interested to know if I'm missing out on something awesome...

After being used to a smartphone I couldn’t stand having a mobile device that didn’t just have all my software on it available at any time so have gone digital for everything except Zelda which I preordered with the machine.

This is me. I've just traded in Odyssey for example. Incredible game but am I realistically ever likely to touch it again in the next year or so? Nah, I have too much to play. Sold it for 35 quid. If I ever want to play it again in the future I'll rebuy it when the price has dropped.

I'm also not constantly switching between games so that isn't a factor for me. I tend to stick to one game when I play and then move onto another rather than hopping between 2-3 so it makes no odds to me whether it's a cartridge or on the machine. I do buy indies digitally but only because there's no choice.

Just depends on your gaming habits really.

If I were you, think I'd just be using Boomerang then...might be worth a look for you.

@Jonathan_Kerr The only physical game I have is BotW, which never leaves the slot. Everything else I've bought is digital.

It comes down to balancing convenience against value really. I never bother trading in games so resale value is a non-issue for me, and I'd rather pay the extra for the convenience of having everything at my fingertips rather than have to switch cards.

You do occasionally get a good price for download codes from resellers, which gets you the best of both worlds. Amazon were selling Mario Odyssey download codes for just over £40 prior to launch for instance.

We've had this discussion a few times and there's never any absolute definitive best way. It's proven to be down to personal preference more than anything.

Obviously digital is more convenient as you'll never have to swap cartridges, but the carts are tiny and it's fairly effortless to swap them in and out, and you can carry a bunch around with you in whatever case you choose (a pretty much essential purchase).

The other thing to consider is that if you go digital only you will need an SD card. They're not overly expensive though, and to be fair you'll need one eventually anyway due the smallish 32gb storage the Switch has.

I've gone all physical because I like having physical stuff on display and there's always the trade in value you don't get with digital. Of course some games are only digital and I've got a nice balance of those and carts. Overall I'm happy doing it this way. I'll always have one cart in the Switch and the rest in my case with a good few Indies I can load up too at any time without switching carts, and I save storage space that way too. And if you ever plan on owning more than one Switch, or swap games with friends etc. you can do that with carts.

Physical seems to be generally cheaper (both new and used), be resalable/swappable, and have nice dinky hardcases. Carts themselves are tiny and most cases hold at least 4 (+1 in the Switch) which is more gaming than I can imagine needing on the hoof.

Digital costs more (at least for non-Indies), and you can’t resell it, and you have to buy an SD card. But it’s more convenient due to lack of cart swapping, and also has slightly faster load times.

All physical for me, whenever possible.

Worth noting though that with the Switch gaining popularity more and more bt the day, and with more third parties wanting to jump on board, it's likely that the size of games will go up meaning that even if you do go mainly physical you're still going to need some extra storage space for the download of data required that wouldn't fit on the cart. We've already seen this happen with Doom and LA Noire and it's likely to continue for the time being.

In short, by an SD card

I might be wrong, I don't have it myself, but I think the parental control app shows you playtime data....

I've got the Switch android app and it's useless, doesn't give you any info whatsoever
