Picked up Snipperclips Plus physical release. It's such a simple game, but really well thought out! So far, none of the puzzles have been too taxing, but they're slowly getting more challenging. Love it!

Where did you get it? Couldn't find anywhere bricks & mortar carrying it, will have to go to Amazon I think. My wife loved the demo.

Snuck in about half an hour of Mario vs Rabbids last night - I really like it. Good sense of humour, and trimming down accuracy percentages to just 100%/50%/0% is a little stroke of genius that turns it into something which is at times more like a puzzle game than a tactics game. Just got my first weapon upgrades, and met the Hoppers.

The only thing I can't get used to is the fact that I'm controlling. Beep-O and not Mario, which makes timed coin chases a bit tricky.

Amazon, but they seemed to have issues getting stock and it was delayed a few times.

absolutely loving Doom on this thing... I've just made it back to Mars from Hell and I've already found more secrets,  challenges, doom guys, upgrades etc than I did through my whole play through on the PS4 (well - what I managed of it, probably about 95% complete).  Really suits the form factor and being able to shove it on the big screen when I get a chance is nice too.  Sure, it doesn't looks as nice as the PS4 version but, I'm happy with the compromises as the handheld capability just makes such a difference to me.

next stop - Skyrim.

Some Splatoon 2 news coming at 2pm....

Have I mentioned I love that game? It's 'effin fabulous. Buy it people. Buy it.

I'm just about to. So that's Splatoon 2 Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and a 128gb sd card. If I say it really quickly it doesn't sound as expensive

Splatoon 2 would not be expensive at £200. It's solid gold entertainment that goes on and on and on and on. I think it's the best thing Nintendo have done in decades. It's the ultimate boss-form of easy to grasp gameplay with more depth than the mariana trench. Apart from Splat Zones. Splat Zones can suck my balls.

I know, but I stand by it. Splatoon is 'New Nintendo' at the absolute top of their game.

Is it worth going through the single player first do you think, just to acclimatise myself?

Not really, just dive in to Turf War and get up top speed that way - the single-player stuff is nice, but don't hold back from getting online until you've done it. And remember, the aim is not to kill everyone - that's just a gloriously satisfying sub-quest.

Also remember, the different weapons really do totally change the way you have to play - so try them all out and find a style that works for you.

Cool. I've been stepping back in after a few months off - like an old, familiar blanket. Full of ink.

I played only the original for a year. Nothing else - bought Splatoon! in August and for a year, played only that game. Until I finally had had my fill.

So yeah, 200 quid for a solid year's entertainment?  Worth it for me.

Do try all of the weapons out, like @rgraves said - the various combinations of primary, secondary and specials lend themselves to different styles. All of the starting weapons are usable right up to the top ranks - otherwise, as you level up, check out rollers and Aerospray MGs (level 7) for turf war.

I've still not put a lot of time into Splatoon 2 so I'm not judging it but I don't think I get it yet. You're just shooting paint at the floor and walls right? I mean, that's basically it, alongside shooting at people if you can. Am I missing anything?

The inherent joy in the above, it sounds like!

I think it's pretty quick to reveal its charms so it may just not be for you. It's well worth persevering with just to be sure though.

You're not missing anything - the same as if I described Mario as just running and jumping. It covers it functionally, but the joy is in doing it.

Actually, you are even over-stating it a bit - you just really need to shoot at the floor - walls don't count towards the total coverage.

There are some decent savings to be had but nothing on the level of PS4/XBone bundles. E.g Tesco were doing a deal where if you bought the Mario Odyssey bundle then you got Mario and Rabbids for free but that seems to be out of stock now.

This is probably the best place to keep an eye out for now http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-11-21-best-nintendo-switch-black-friday-2017-deals-1

Basic turf war, you aim to cover more of the ground with your ink, so yes. You can do this by: shooting the ground with your primary weapon; using a secondary weapon like a bomb, grenade or mine; Shooting and splatting an opponent so they explode in a wash of *your* ink colour; using a special weapon (once you fill a gauge by covering enough ink).

You don't even need to shoot the floor in some cases - brushes and rollers combine movement with inking (brushes giving you extra speed to do so) so you just whizz around the arena.

But that's not all ink does - you have two movement modes. Kid and Squid. Kid-form, you walk around relatively slowly and can use weapons. Squid form, you swim through ink of your colour - this is faster; you're harder to see (and there's clothing with a special stealth buff you can buy to make it harder); and you can jump further as a squid. You also regenerate health and refill ammo when swimming in your ink. You ink walls so that you can climb up them as a squid, gaining that height advantage.

So ink coverage is strategic - the more ink you have down, the more freedom of movement you have.

But also tactical - for example, a curling mine shoots off in a straight line leaving a trail of your ink behind it before exploding. You can use that as a simple ranged weapon, like a torpedo. Or you can swim behind the mine and leap up where it exploded - the explosion gives you cover, and you're closer to the bad guys. Keep still while submerged in ink, and you're invisible. Move slowly, and you're hard to spot. Stack up a couple of swim speed ups, and you're goddamn Jaws, man - or, use a Ninja squid and you're Predator. If you're faced with a sea of the opponent's colour you have no idea where they're lurking (unless you toss in a point sensor...).

And weapons are not created equal - sniper rifles don't give much coverage; but they help keep opponents at bay; can cut off access routes. And they can cover a lot of ground if they splat a LOT of opponents. Which they often do. I often use a very rapid fire, short-range weapon simply because it allows me to generate escape routes very quickly - I duck and dive a lot in combat. Literally.

So there's a huge variety of choice in the way you play the game - what weapons do you choose? Do you want to engage, or keep out of the way, tidying up behind the scenes and re-inking while your buddies defend the turf? Do you want to be mobile, or happier camping?

That's before you come to Salmon Run, Tower Control, Rainmaker and SPlat Zone modes...

I'd recommend Single player > Salmon Run/Turf War > Ranked. In that order.

Single player will introduce all of the weapon types and some game play features to you gradually, then Salmon Run will provide a preset load out of weapons each time it's running. Turf War is pretty much relegated to warm up mode once you get onto ranked.

Time magazine named the Nintendo Switch the best gadget of 2017: http://time.com/5029999/top-10-gadgets-2017/

Can’t disagree with them really, it’s a stunning achievement. It’s had a fabulous year of software (including two of the best games I’ve ever played), breathed new life into old classics, and is already my favourite console.

Okay, that all sounds potentially fun. I've only had 3 games I think so I knew there was a lot more to discover. Sounds like I was sort of right about what the gameplay involves but had no real idea about what you could do within that. Think it might take me a while to get to grips with despite everyone saying it's simple to.

There's a lot of simple bits that stack up, but really, you start out just learning to run, swim and shoot; the rest you get by osmosis.

Why is everyone so excited about the Xenoblade Collectors edition? Its just an art book and cd - same as pretty much every other collectors edition.

Am I missing something?

People love accumulating tat, I guess.
